Mardy Fish better career than Roddick without anxiety issues

I really enjoyed watching Mardy Fish in his day; I often wonder how much his crippling anxiety affected his career. Would he have surpassed Roddick, perhaps Safin even without it?

As far as I'm aware, Mardy's anxiety issues only surfaced towards the end of his career. In his earlier days, he was held back more by fitness and mental strength issues.

This

And Fish played some of his best tennis when he was around age 20-22, but Roddick was already ten times the player Fish was by then too

Well.. how about without his weight issue that caused all his injury lay offs? I think if he had Roddick's fitness early on he could have easily been a consistent top 20 player and snuck out some big titles with some slam semis and quarters.. Hard to imagine him sneaking out slams during the period of Federer/Nadal/Djokovic dominance ('04-'15ish?), but id say he could've definitely had a Wawrinka type career before Stan won the AO.

I was sober when I started this thread; Mardy and I don't deserve this deluge of opprobrium. Having said that, Fish opened up about his anxiety issues at the end of his career but he explained they have haunted him his whole life. The injuries didn't help either. I guess I was enamored with his play in 2010/2011 against Djoker and Federer

Nope time a thousand. Roddick was a much better player, plus far more mentally tough. Roddick rarely, if ever, had a meltdown; he just got outplayed, sometimes in embarassing fashion (AO 07, siiiiigh) Fish's fitness was never good, thus causing all his injuries in the first place.

Well I would hope you weren't drunk, coming up with words like that. ;)

No opprobrium from me, I liked Mardy as a player and thought he had considerable talent. I always felt sorry that he never managed to convert any of his 4 Masters finals into a win, something he himself said he regretted. He came close on all 4 occasions as each one went the distance and he almost beat Roddick at 2003 Cincinnati when he held championship points in the deciding set tie-breaker but couldn't convert any. He came very close against Federer too at 2010 Cincinnati as I recall he went up a break in the deciding set but couldn't hold onto it. Both of his other 2 finals were against Djokovic (2008 Indian Wells and 2011 Montreal) and he took a set off him on both occasions. He had game and talent and he deserved to have won at least 1 Masters event but, in the end, I just thought he lacked the killer instinct that true champions possess to get them over the finishing line. It was a shame for him.

Biggest achievement of Fish’s career is letting us see a glimpse of aggressive Murray.

Yes, I was thinking the same.

As sad as it was for Fish to suffer these issues, they only occurred when he was past his prime - a prime which, although decent (top 10 player material) was no match for Roddick's slam-winning career.

I have no clue what opprobrium means, but if you post something that people disagree with, you should expect that they will voice their opinions. If you get offended easily, then don't post your unpopular opinions.

I was being facetious. You should not begin a post by stating you do not know what a word means when digital dictionaries are bountiful. I relish in polemics and do not get offended, less you say my seventh nose job was no good in which case damn you to hell
