He is better off just getting the thing done and forget about getting back to the top as he will never ever get there. Why? Let's say he does the surgery and recovers from it to be able to train. Just to train! It will take him up to 18 months to be able to play. So, if we assume at the age of 33 he is all healthy he will need lots of practice and it may take another 6-12 months to do so. Can anyone really see him back to Top 5 at the age of 34? Please do not say......aghhhh what about Fedr? He ain't Fedr and if Fedr had to do the same he would not make it himself either. No one would.

Hoping the retirement announcement will help take any pressure off that he may feel to return to the top of the game. It seems he's accepted the idea that he is likely to hang up the racket for good barring good fortune, so no huge harm done to his current predicament if he is unable to return.

For those who make spitting and uncharitable remarks about Murray undoergoing hip surgery - GET A LIFE. Anyone who has to undergo major surgery should have our best wishes and hopes for a full recovery. Stop complaining and being all hurt. He doesn't deserve your indignation and ire and, hopefully, you are not so much of a tw*t that you would seriously aim that sh*t at him.

He’s doing it to improve his quality of life post-tennis. If it enables him to play a bit longer then that’s a massive bonus.

I think many of us Muzzites are compelled to believe that his career is over but I'm confused whether Murray is finished or seeks to make another comeback, was his match vs RBA the end? I'm guessing it was.

What's up with attacking Murray in this thread? He said he cannot even tie his shoes without pain so another operation was going to happen at some point so he has a better quality of life. He may not even be able to play again except one last hurrah at Wimbledon to make his retirement official. Yea let's kick a great player while he's down who's being pushed out of the game because of a chronic injury and whose chances of playing a top level again are slim. Classy. I wish Murray the best.

Andy Murray can still make a comeback after surgery, says Bob Bryan
“I personally think he can do it,” Bryan said here at the Australian Open.
Bryan has been in regular contact with Murray and has recommended to him the New York-based surgeon, Dr Edwin Su, who operated on the 40-year-old American in August. He said that Murray had already spoken to Dr Su.
“Seeing the way Andy Murray is feeling kind of hit a nerve with me,” Bryan said, after winning his first Grand Slam match with his twin brother Mike since last year’s Australian Open. “I would love to see him do a similar surgery, feel the relief that it gives. I think our hips are pretty similar: just worn-down, no cartilage.”
Doubles specialist Bryan said he was on crutches for two weeks after the surgery but felt no pain when he started walking again. “I’m just telling Andy, ‘I feel great, my quality of life is great, practices are going well’. Maybe I’m not 100 per cent yet, but I’m only five months in. The doctors say it’s more like seven or eight months until you feel perfect.”

1) Murray didn’t retire
2) Murray didn’t ask for any of those tributes the AO did that in case a 5 time finalist never returned.
3) There’s no guarantee he’s even coming back. Odds are this surgery will end his singles career

Surgery will be done also for a better quality of life as Murray said, so he is not doing to just try and come back.
But even if he aspires to make a comeback, it will take years. It's basically a retirement. Chances are low he will be back.

My guess is he's done. This is consistent with what he said that the AO could be his last tournament. People read to much into his post 1R loss comments about trying to come back - there are a lot of emotions involved when you just played what could be the last tour match of your career and it was a 5-setter where adrenaline was a big factor. Chances are the next day he realized it's over, time to get the surgery and let's see how post-op rehab goes, but nothing short of a miracle will get his hip back to a level where he can consistently play Top-10 level tennis.

I think it's just the opposite. He got beat down by Djoker and made an emotional decision. He then got on the court and realized he still wants it. The encouragement from Bob Bryan probably helped.
He'll be back, but he needs to adjust his expectations. Don't worry about the top 10 and don't schedule any more practice matches or exhos vs. Djoker. Just try to string a few matches together and see where it goes. Try to make a run here and there. It's better than early retirement.

He’s having the Birmingham resurfacing operation. This is what’s involved and what Bob Bryan had last August.

I read he’s flown back to the UK after he lost this week. So if he was going to have it done with John O’Donnell who did the first less invasive operation last January, then it would seem strange to fly all the way home and then back again. But who knows.
I think there is little chance he makes it back for Wimbledon this year. If he has it done in the next few weeks. As Bob Bryan said singles is a different beast altogether.

He didn’t make it worse. John O’Donnell didn’t mess up Murray’s hip he just couldn’t fix it with the operation he performed on him, which was just sticking a camera in his hip and tidying it up. Murray did the damage to himself from the years of over training/playing and also bad luck from being born with a shallow hip socket.
From what I read of other Orthopaedic surgeons opinions, O’donnell and no Orthopaedic surgeon would have known how much damage was done to Murray’s hip until they put the camera in his hip to see what damage there was. The resurfacing operation is just the inevitable next step after it is apparent that the first op and rehab didn’t work. There is no guarantee that this Dr Edwin Su will perform the miracle of getting Andy back to elite level singles tennis. And Bob as he said is a Doubles player who won’t need to grind from the back of the court which is Andy’s natural game.

Which is reasonable given his passion for the sport, his painful and lengthy attempts to recover, and his publicly emotional nature.
I hope he makes it back. Tennis is better with a big 4.
