Novak did a big mistake by winning Rome

he was still cautious with his celebration as he knew that things like over-the-top fist pumping and shirt ripping would be fatal for his cause at roland garros as that would only bloody fire up nadal......

but the thing is the defeat still brought back nadal's fire to where it should be......this defeat will anger him and put him on practice courts for a few more hours and sharpen all ends of his game.......that fire is what he exactly needed for roland garros......

book it now......roland garros final will not go beyond 4 sets if nole makes it to nadal......nadal will be waiting in the final......he just wants nole on the other side of the net and he just wants to finish him off in 3 sets......

Yeah because THAT is how Ralph was getting motivated for Roland Garros all these years.........By losing in clay MS1000 events

With regular marathons at Rome, Nadal tested his body to the full extent, and was 3-3 in the final set. Nadal will be encouraged by Rome. And yes, Djokovic has given Nadal some extra motivation for Roland Garros by beating him on the eve. You can see the rage in Nadal when they meet at the slams.

Lets analyze this clay season and re-think if Nadal will actually be "encouraged".
  • Gets beaten ON CLAY by puppets he previously owned.
  • Routinely gets taken to 3 sets ON CLAY
  • Only wins one title ON CLAY and only because his opponent gets injured while in the process of handing Nadal a nasty beat down ON CLAY
  • Publicly admits he is having confidence problems and tells everybody not to expect him to keep winning all the time

Yeah things are looking great for Nadal

OH and lets not forget: No signs of any injury this clay season so that excuse is not there to fall back on.

Noone wins forever and Nadal's time will come too, whether it's this year or the next. With all due respect to the KOC, if he's fated to lose his clay throne in this RG, he WILL. Nothing you/I can do about it. Lest I remind you that Nadal had a lucky escape in both RG 11 and RG 13(the net trip) so perhaps he's reached the end of the rope. We'll just have to wait n see. ;)

True. He needs to send a thank you to Fed for RG'11

RG'13 was incredibly unlucky for Novak.

How long will his luck last? Nobody knows...

Not yet anyway. Remember, the only time Nadal was injured playing on clay was when he lost to Soderling at RG. Never mind the fact that he had destroyed his 3 previous opponents at RG.

Yep.............djoker did da big mistake...............................................angered da rafa.............................mess with da bull......get da horns.......................................................................... :)

To be serious, I'm sure Djokovic was happy to win rather than take the loss. I thought his celebration was muted because of the flooding in Serbia. :)

It is never a mistake to win a match but I think Djokovic knows that there is still work to do, and it will take a lot to get it done. He certainly has the game to beat Nadal(fired up or not), and it is a mental battle as much as it is a physical battle.

Novak tweaked his game a bit yet again to beat Nadal.

Can't wait to see how Nadal would respond at French Open.

''So unbeatable that he's lost 6 slam finals...''

... LOL!!... Yeah exactly, and let's not forget that Novak was 1 win away from completing the 'Noledal Slam'... ie,winning 4 consecutive grand slams... and all against Nadal in succession.

.. If it wasn't for Rafito carrying on and jumping up and down to the umpire about evil Novak excelling in wet conditions and negating his forehand spin the match might've gone on ahead instead of having it halted with Novak leading 2-0 in the 4th and on a run of 8 consecutive games.I had a good gut feeling Novak was going to get him had that match not been stopped.Damn shame!

just like nadal has the edge over fed mentally

nole over rafa....simples

except in the nadal nole comparison it is even worse as the leftie fh over feds single hander is not there.....

so nadal should not be losing.

Uncle Toni: "I have a new plan for the clay season."

Rafa: "Why new plan? Beat everybody, win everything, work good so far, no?"

Uncle Toni: "Yes, but we need to change tactics to build up your fire. You need to start losing!"

Rafa: "Que? I don't build confidence by losing, no?"

Uncle Toni: "By losing you get angry, and you get FIRE back!"

Rafa: "But fire is there, always! Winning keeps fire burning, no?"

Uncle Toni: "You have to listen to me!"

Rafa: "Ok, maybe I lose to Djokovic once."

Uncle Toni: "No. You also have to lose to Ferrer, Almagro and get dominated by Nishikori."

Rafa: "Que? But I lose my confidence, no?"

Uncle Toni: "Yes, but you will have FIRE for RG and you will be unstoppable!"

Rafa: "Hmmm... ok,, VAMOSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!"

Actually the line of reasoning is correct, but the OP has missed one very important detail. SoG allowed Rafa to think he was competitive and for Knee Dull to believe had the draw not been so difficult he could have won, so no need to get fired up..... he lulled Nads into a false sense of security by winning really.

until I realized that OP most likely meant this as being serious, judging on his post history. Total delusional guy who apparently believes Rafa is a Marvell-comics character in stead of a mere human being, which is kinda sad.

Rather than talking about Nadal's fire, I think we have to acknowledge the increased anxiety/apprehensiveness he gets when he has to face Djokovic now, like Federer does when facing Nadal. Confidence is important and after Rome, Djokovic's confidence has gone up while Nadal's has gone down. I think Nadal will be extremely nervous at RG. I rate him as the top favorite, but unlike previous years, there are players who are genuinely capable of beating him at RG. FO 2014 will be unpredictable.

So you can make a mistake by winning the tournament?

And, you can lull people-including your main rival-to sleep by losing to him 4 straight times within a relatively short time(we all saw how that went a few years ago) and also losing to a veritable plethora of players who were formerly pigeons. Well, consider me lulled, lol...

When BP takes it where he's always scratching, there will be people jumping out of windows around here...

Ahhh, but as the hapless poster you responded to pointed out, BP was 3-3 in the final set! Too bad for him you need 6 games to win a set, and losing by a double service break in the final set isn't exactly competitive-but, poor Widdle Rafa was exhausted by the 5 round, best of 3 tournament. Of course, that, along with his less than scintillating form thus far this year, begs the question as to why he should be expected to do well in a 7 round tournament on the same surface that is best of 5.

Just like Nadal got fired up and found his ultimate form after almost losing to andujar...
And getting beaten by Ferrer. .
And then by Almagro..
And then by almost getting thrashed by Nishikori..

Yup. You can see how all those losses have helped him.

my gosh, you completely missed the point!

i'm not that surprised

Almagro, Andujar, or even Ferrer are not Nadal's main rivals! and thus would not stoke the fire in the pit of his stomach the way only Nole really can for Nadal...

Rafa is one of the most mentally-tough players in history, and - despite being a big fan - it's not a question Novak is in his head. There is no reason Rafa shouldn't have finish Rome in 2. Djokovic was slamming rackets on his chair and could not find an answer. Rafa responded to his opponent's collapse by giving him a free break a minute later. He doesn't do that against anyone.

Not taking anything away from Novak - his clinic in the 3rd was incredible, especially considering the fact that these guys had been playing for how many days straight? He earned it, Rafa never quit. But it was not the usual hard-charged Nadal you see against other guys. Nole owns the x-factor between those two.

i largely agree, but would say that Nadal clay court form was quite low before Rome, specifically his match against Murray (rewatching the Madrid final was near cringe worthy regarding Nadal's ground strokes).

Nadal finally played into some form in the final against Nole, although his serve was still lacking and he seemed a little tired by the 3rd set, but at least hs ground strokes were largely flowing like normal. Nole just happened to peak at the right times and long enough to beat Nadal in 3 sets….

and i also agree that Nadal has definitely lost some fire since last years USO, but i think the defeat against Nole Sunday will rev him up some...

DRII

What if the fire's already gone?

he still has some that can be rekindled. of course he has the target of 17 (+1) when it comes to slams. and i think he will do near whatever it takes to finally win the YEC at some point!

i just hope the back issue doesn't acutely come up again...

wow how many angry and butthurt responses......your angry responses can only mean one thing, that you perhaps inherently agree that maybe i have a point here......

i never said that nadal did not try to win.......i just said that nole shouldn't have forced himself so much for the victory.......this was not the time to throw the kitchen sink at rafa......

i am good at understanding tennis players' psyches......djokovic needs roland garros right? right......but willingness to win and actually knowing how to win are different things.......

this is a very special case we are discussing here.......it is nole's last big chance at roland garros and the opponent is the ever great clay god of tennis nadal.......you have to get through him if you are to ever get your hands on that eluding trophy of paris......

so nole should have softened up nadal by losing in straight sets and making nadal uncomfortable and puzzled.......putting him in a doubt whether nole is in top form or not, because nadal himself is not in great form......

now that nole has given his best at rome and there is a possibility that nadal hasn't stretched his left knee all that much PLUS the overcast slow conditions, there is enough doubt and panic in djokovic's camp about nadal's form for roland garros......

if i were djokovic, i would never believe nadal's press conferences......i would never hit his ego just before roland garros.......i would play his servant in the lead-ups and backstab him right at the grand end which is roland garros......because i know that if i mess with him earlier in the race, he will catch me just in time before roland garros......

so i feel that there is a chance of some panic setting in in djokovic's camp......nadal will now show up prepared, hungry and angry for the grand final......

So now if we lose to Rafa, we increase his confidence, if we win, we re-kindle his fire, both ways this Rafa guy wins in the end !!!!:)

b ut wasnt that the case already? i thought we long established that Nadal was 100% victorious when he wins!!!

Why would Nadal's motivation be any different if he'd won Rome than if he lost it?

Roland Garros is Roland Garros.

Although the last time Djokovic beat Nadal in Rome, it was arguably Federer taking Nole out of the SF that won Nadal that RG more than anything.

panic setting? Have you seen Nadals serve stats this year? They are his worst ever.

I've figured out what's wrong with Rafa:
IT'S HIS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now take a look at the serve ranking!

1st serve points won:
2005: #21
2006: #32
2007: #13
2008: #42
2009: #32
2010: #11
2011: #24
2012: #5
2013: #16
2014: #56

2nd serve points won:
2005: #3
2006: #1
2007: #3
2008: #1
2009: #3
2010: #2
2011: #4
2012: #3
2013: #6
2014: #45

Service games won:
2005 and 2006: #4
2007: #1
2008: #9
2009: #5
2010: #1
2011: #7
2012 and 2013: #3
2014: #30 :shock::shock:

Conclusion: Rafa CANNOT serve this year. Even though he doesn't say it, it's GOT TO be his back. Such a vertiginous drop. No other possible reason!!

They have combined to win 46 masters titles and no one even cares about them for all time rankings. They both know its all about the slams now.
If that's the case, chang's superior quality of wins and higher title count are not good enough compared to roddick.

Nalbandian had many quality wins over fed and nadal, but doesn't have the us open because he got injured in 2003.
Even Fernando Gonzalez olympic singles silver and doubles efforts and wtf win over fed were superb compared to peak Roddick's lucky match point saves at Montreal, cincinnati, Miami and against injured nalbandian at us open.
Massu was an honorable mention with singles and doubles wins.
