Observations from Key Biscayne 2008 practice courts

Tennis Balls: Very bloated and pressurized Penn ATP, but get chewed up quickly by the angry surface.

Kohlschreiber
Confidence: +
With his recent good success he is playing with lots of confidence. Hits fast, deep, heavy and consistent ball from both sides. Comparison to last year, he's added few miles extra on his FH and BH. Last year at this time he seemed to be using the regular Kfactor, while now -- unless it is a paint-job -- he is getting more power with the Kblade.

Berdych
Confidence: -
Really beautiful and smooth game to watch, however doesn't seem to be playing his best tennis. I don't see a whole lot of confidence on him, unless that's how he is personality-wise: mellow. Although his serve is sharp, I don't see him past quarters.

Tsonga
Confidence: -
I was surprised that he is not as powerful as I thought he would be. His
shots were not as polished and deep as he played Nadal at the
Australian. Saw him several times practicing; against Soderling, Tsonga
was on his toes, as Soderling's grounds-strokes were deeper, faster and
more consistent than Tsonga's.

Soderling
Confidence: +
Watch out for this guy to make a major move, and have a major win... I
just don't know when (and if ever!). Gets enormous pace, deep flat
shots, yet quite consistent with quite a relaxed motion.

Safin
Confidence: -
From what I saw on the practice courts, I don't know if he'll last a
round or two. I am sure he made yet probably another fan happy by
breaking a tennis racket... I just didn't watch his full practice... I
didn't think it was worth.

Tipsarevic
Confidence: +
I just don't think he has it to handle the pace of the big guys.
Although he barely missed anything on the practice courts.

Grosjean
Confidence: +
Got to the final of Sunrise, losing to Haase. His game is looking good
and solid.

Nieminen
Confidence: +
His game is awesome to watch as usual. He doesn't seem to have a bad day
on the practice courts, and all ATP players must love practicing with
him, since he is so methodical and consistent. His face expression has a
little smile as well, it is like he is constantly smiling.

Hrbaty
Confidence: -/+
Might as well just repeat what I wrote about Nieminen above.
Although being off the tour for long time because of the surgery (and
you can see his scar on the elbow too) his baseline game is as sharp as
ever. Methodical, consistent, low flat deep ball. He now has a new
serving motion; it's the old Agassi motion: Lifting the racket up first
before tossing the ball... and as a result his serve is about 15-20mph
slower than normal... which will be just enough for the other tour guys
to chew him up alive in the early rounds.

Ancic
Confidence: -
This guy's ground-strokes do not look sound to me.... They do not look
like top 100 ATP! I see something abrupt, strange and technically-wrong
with his ground-stroke swings... quite possibly using the wrong grip for
the type of swings he does. I think he puts a bit too much spin, yet the
motion is a bit unorthodox on both sides. But he is able to make up for
his impaired swings by his great serve and volley game.

Blake
Confidence: +
He is playing relaxed and well. Although he hits his backhand with
confidence... it is one strange non-ATP-looking swing!

Nadal
Confidence: +
The guy can rip the ball with enormous power and on the practice court
he doesn't even rip it at his maximum. If at the Australian Open, Tsonga
made Nadal look like heavy-weight vs. lightweight, at Key Biscayne 2008
I observed the opposite (although I didn't see them practicing
together!). I have no doubt in my mind that there is not an ATP player currently that ruins the tennis balls more than Nadal. He rips it so
much, and the ball comes down to land on the baseline right the last
fraction of the second. I saw Nadal practicing with Hewitt, and it
looked like Heavyweight vs. Lightweight... although Hewitt did well as
well.

Hewitt
Confidence: +
He is very consistent. Since switching back to the yellow Yonex, I think
he's dropped about 5mph on his ground strokes, but nevertheless he plays
the old consistent tennis he's always played. If he however has to face
Nadal for a real match, I'll favor Nadal.

Karlovic
Confidence: -
He didn't seem too confident on his baseline game, although his serves
were great and reliable as usual.

Mayer
Confidence: +
Always thought he belongs in the top 20... His game is beautiful, smooth
and consistent to watch. Maybe some mental lack of confidence between
points, results in him being lower ranked. Well, he lost in the first round already.

Davydenko
Confidence: -
I think his game is in a bit of a decline. Comparing his game to the
last couple of years, he did better then than now.

Del Potro
Confidence: +
Watch out for this guy to make a major move. His game is very powerful
and consistent too.

Melzzer
Confidence: -
I don't see him playing too well.

Ferrero
Confidence: +
His game is sharp and he is playing well... although in the practice
session I saw against Federer... it still wasn't enough to win the
practice match.

Federer
Confidence: not as sharp as usual but nevertheless he might just end up
winning the tournament anyway!
Beat Ferrero in the practice set he played against him. Ground-strokes
are not as sharp as normal. Volleys however were very sharp: The best I
saw out of anyone on the practice courts! Really interesting how he breaks his wrist for a fraction of a second, right before impact on the FH side.

Ferrer
Confidence: -
Not playing as well as usual... and he knows that, and gets quite
erratic. I don't see him progressing much.

Monaco
Confidence: +
The best I've ever seen him play. He is getting quite consistent with
good shots!

Gasquet
Confidence: +
He is hitting well. I think it's the most consistent that I've seen him play.

Mathieu
Confidence: +
Hitting good as well.

Haas
Confidence: -
I don't think his game is up to his best.

Malisse
Confidence: I can never tell.
The guy plays like an artist. His game is beautiful to watch... yet as
usual I don't think he'll deliver a brilliant performance as expected
for how many years already.

Youzhny
Confidence: +
He is playing well and confident. Watch out everyone!

Gonzalez
Confidence: -
Not playing as well as he was last year.

Mahut
Confidence: +
He is playing well.

Almagro
Confidence: +
Playing well. He can rip the biggest FHs and BHs... with very fast and sharp swings! Carries himself very relaxed around the court... kind of like Federer.... Maybe he thinks he is one! He can get far in the tournament though... just like Federer!

Canas
Confidence: +
Never underestimate a Canas; he can always do some damage!

Robredo
Saw him missing some shots against Iankovic (they practiced together), so, that's one reason why I am not going to pick him to go far.

Henin
She plays like a short 200-500 ATP guy. Hits very deep too: That's one reason why her shots are difficult to handle. And another one is she can create good angles!

Surprise of the tournament
I already posted about this here:
http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?p=2193178#post2193178
I had no idea ARAVANE REZAI can hit such fast, big, deep & flat ground-strokes. When I was watching her practice, she just goes for kill shots right away... or maybe I am wrong and she was just practicing kill shots.... But whatever they were, they are the real deal! I guess she can't really do them on a consistent basis though... or else she would be #1 in the world for sure. She is short and slightly chubby girl; the extra weight definitely helps her to put the extra weight on her shots. From the baseline, she absolutely matches the power of many ATP tour players, and I am not kidding!

No surprise
Just as usual, tour players (males mostly) have poor maners... yet as a reward they get asked for their autograph by the kids that are bound to grow up just as dull. Many lazy idiots can't drag their lazy feet to the garbage can (on the side of each court) to throw away their used water-bottles and tennis cans. Instead many would prefer to smash them and kick them around. Well, but in Key Biscayne, there is a constant breeze, so the wind rolls some loose bottles and cans back on the court. In one instance, after the wind blew a tennis can onto his court, the fool got annoyed and went to smash and kick the can... but again somehow the garbage can's purpose was overlooked.

Annoying
The fans, and the cell-phones, the loud-talking people, the bees that attack your food... the over-priced food: $6.75 for a slice of pizza!? And the prostitutes that barely wear anything and hang around the players' lounge.

Nice analysis. Do you mean Confidence +/- in how confident you are they will do well at Miami? How about Monfils, how is he going?

Yes, + means good, and - means bad.
As for +/- for Hrbaty, it means so-so; I guess he knows his serve is not up-to-date... although he'll try to make it up with the great ground game he has.

Monfils? I didn't see him on the practice courts.

idk if what you said about tsonga was true... at least it wasn't today. he was cracking the ball against in practice with tommy rebredo. hardest ive ever seen anyone hit.

This is a great post, very nice of you to share it here, unlike players bashing threads all over the place these days.... sigh

Hope you are right about Grosjean, Gasquet, and Mathieu. From what I saw in IW, I agree whole-heartedly with your Youzhny, Soderling, and Kohlslaw predictions. I feel like they will be big forces for the tourney and the year. Hopefully Nalbandian keeps it up as well and keeps the weight off.

Nice post

Jmsx521 you've been busy, and with good reason. This is a great analysis.
Took about an hour to write this.... And how about this: In one of my last edits I get a TW pop-up message that my message is too long and I can't edit it. I can't ever recall getting one of those before!
Though, !Tym probably gets those all the time!

Maybe it's because the court surface is slower than the one in Australia... but that's how I observed it.

I saw Tsonga and Gasquet. They were on par with each other. Then, (I think) on the next day, I saw Tsonga and Soderling, and Soderling's shots were deep, steel-solid, flat and consistent, and they were keeping Tsonga out of his comfort zone. With Nadal, at the Australian, the ball was bouncing right up Tsonga's comfort zone... but it was not the case with Soderling here.

And again, that's just practice; they are hitting the ball to each other... not too much left and right. You'll see the tour players slowing down the ball if the other guy is struggling a bit, or not being able to reach the ball. In practice the tour players respect each other more. Many amateur players don't understand that concept, and start trying to hit a winner on you. One of the reasons (aside that they are good) that the tour players manage to hit 50-100 shots in a row without missing is because they are not trying to hit a winner on you... something the amateur players don't seem to get. I've seen two ATP players get in an argument at Key Biscayne couple of years ago, because one was not hitting the ball to the other and was trying to hit a winner on him. That's how serious this issue is.

Nice and funny analysis :)
I would rather go for the practice then for the match itself, especially when you can get close or just behind them and see how hard and especially how accurate they hit, ball after ball...

Ancic is a top ten player lying in the weeds. Just wait-he's the real deal. I don't see the "awkwardness" of his strokes-they look great to me, but then, I'm no pro.

I had the privilige of watching Justine train hours on end and I must confirm. Henin could give a ATP 200-500 a whole lot of trouble. When she's playing her best she is just amazing.

Thanks, nice post. Altough I'm sure we all realize there is world of difference between practice and match play. A guy like Mathieu, for example, is never going to look bad on a practice court. He hits a monster ball with heavy top off both wings. Match play can be a vastly different story when strategy, mental toughness, point construction etc. come into play.

(I'm a Mathieu fan by the way).

I'm amazed you can judge a speed difference in someone's serve, esp if he's been out of action for some time. Is it that evident or does it require a very trained eye ?

btw, isn't this the Todd Martin serve (raise rack then toss), someone posted a vid of it recently on this forum and suggested others try it.

I know it looks like that, but she really couldn't give 200-500 much trouble at all.

Safin: Practiced twice the day I was there. His backhand still has about the most pace around, and all his balls are hit with exceptional heaviness. I would not underestimate Safin this time, because I thing he cares this time out. Also, Reynolds is little more than a serve, and I thought Safin looked much better off the backhand side tuesday against Moya. I say Safin wins 6-4, 6-4, today.

Volandri: Looked solid against Tsonga, but Tsonga was hitting well, too. I anyone wants a forehand to copy, get a tape of Volandri. There isn't much that can go wrong with his approach.

Karlovic: Looked lowsy on his groundstrokes. His serve and volleys looked ok, though.

Blake: As original poster said, he looked relaxed, and so did Nieminen.

Hewitt: Looked very consistent. It was like every ball was a clone during the warm up ralley.

Roddick: Looked defensive on the forehand, but the serve was going good as usual. His backhand was doing fine, however.

^^^who were the players?
The players that were barking at each other? They were from South America, but can't recall who exactly they were and which country they were from. It wasn't a serious argument, but one of the guys did make sure to accuse the other that he was getting too selfish on the court and trying to hit winners on him.

jmsx, thanks a lot for the great analysis. Must have taken been a whole days work at least.
Well the tournament is only once a year, so I try to get as much as possible for the time I stayed. I did get about 9 hr. per day, for the two days I attended.

Well, compare the 1HBH of Blake vs. Federer, Gasquet, Calleri, Volandri, Kohlschreiber, Almagro, Gaudio and Kuerten; all of these guys follow-through better than Blake, don't they? Blake's 1HBH is effective nevertheless!

It's a matter of practice, training, experience, observation, etc. Just notice the knowledge about pro tennis !Tym has, who usually posts in the Former pro player discussions: He is like an encyclopedia of pro tennis, plus he is qualified and certified to write the biography of Sergi Bruguera too.

Todd Martin's serve was not like that as I recall... unless he has changed his motion recently on the Seniors' Tour.

That is wrong phrase, I would say he is still recovering from whatever happened to him. To be more exact he got injured while surfing, then picked up mono and that pretty much ruined his career. He was out for a whole season in 2007 although he did played many tournaments, illness was there and results show it. He is still not near to what he was in 2006, he is rusty and needs time to get back on track if ever. In terms of his potential, he was 8th in ATP rankings. If Mardy Fish was 17th in 2004 and Federer respects him and says he is not really 94th, he is top 20 caliber, we can safely say that Ancic is easily top 10 caliber right ?

nice post man! how did you find the time to watch so many players???
It's a big tournament with hundreds of players playing. Every court you go to has players practicing. If you go to a small 32 player draw tournament, sometimes you just end up waiting around for players to show up and start playing/practicing; that is not the case however at Key Biscayne: There's always someone to watch.

My comments were based on Ancic's baseline game, not his serve and volley. His serve and volley are good enough to get him in the 2nd week of the tournament. It's kind of like Karlovic's baseline game; Karlovic's ground-strokes are more like ATP 200-500... but his serve is just so good that it makes-up for the weaknesses that he has in his ground-strokes.

He is a choker thus far, he played two excellent tournaments this year and by far his two worse matches were the two finals, I was amased how Llodra got away in Rotterdam with mostly great slicing and of course some insane volleying skills .. But Soderling had all going his way and when it was important, he was not clicking and he gave it away. Not for the first time in his career also.

Well he might face Federer in the 3rd round, this should give an indication on his form, and a good test for Roger. But credut to Llodra in that final because he hung in there and played very well when it mattered, I didn't watch the Memphis final though.

its just about the ugliest stroke in tennis but thats besides the point, anyway i think even blake could tell you whats wrong with his bakchand technically, the wind up, he doesn't even finish the stroke he stops like half way up, his back hand sometimes get a winner but that becuse he very agressive with it at times usually on returns and usually it misses, during the rally its just kind of a "pusher" stroke at least comparred to his level, it can't pressure an opponent or create anything for blake, its just a keep the ball in play until i can run around and start hitting forhands, which is ok he has a great forhand

Fed has a bye then 2nd round and then possibly Soderling? I would love to see this happening, cause now the swede would probably be right to come out and shoot from all the weapons, those big serves and flat groundies and close up and finish on the net - now is the time for him to try to take the game to Fed. But as I said was not exactly a performar in his career, maybe even having Fed in the draw was bad for him, maybe he is not able to reach the third rnd because of this.
