Obsessed With Tennis

Does anyone here feel like tennis is more than a sport, exercise, or a pastime? Like it's a way of life, an obsession, almost like... a drug? It's like that with me. I play almost nonstop but I can never get enough. I haven't even finished the current match before I'm dreaming of the next time I'm on the court. I spend 80% of my spare time thinking about tennis, and 85-90% actually playing. I talk nonstop about it, spend hours analyzing strategy, and spend many lonely days with the practice courts working on my serve.

Tennis takes away any social party life I might have, and the ironic thing is I'm proud of it:)

It's such a beautiful, elegant sport. The rush of competition, the thrill of victory, the crushing sadness of defeat, the heart, the soul, the competition, the perseverance, the struggles, the power, the athleticism, the mental and physical strength it takes to be a good tennis player... and it's all riding on you. You have no one but yourself to blame when you lose. What you put in is what you get out. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!!

Tennis has changed my life, definitely for the better. It made new friends for me, brought self-confidence into my life, gave me exercise, and became a way of life. It's something that I plan to continue until I keel over dead.

My former coach told me: "You can hide from yourself anywhere else. You can keep your feelings bottled up inside and never show yourself to anyone. But on the court that all changes. Tennis bares your soul for all to see." And I believe it!

Any thoughts on being obsessed like I am with tennis are welcome (or how you're not obsessed and how stupid or crazy I am for being obsessed:)).

i think about tennis most of the time, even when im in class. If i pass one day without playing i feel bad, kinda nervious, its like if my body needs to play tennis to feel ok.

I've had periods of this, and I'm a lot older than most of you. Even middle aged guys can get obsessed with tennis. But I haven't played since November (winter being one reason), and once you're away from it awhile, the obsession abates considerably.

Good to see people who love tennis. I sometimes sigh at myself because I am thinking about tennis instead of working..... or other things.

Its always on my mind at some point in the day....darn, i need a gf. Id proabably still think about it just as much with a gf anyway. :)

Lol I'm with all you guys, haha my gf hates it. She always jokes how she's going to have a tennis intervention for me. I wouldn't be suprised if she actually did it too. And yet, she'll never even try tennis.

you think that's bad? my gf actually is the one who gave me my first fix (of tennis that is)! were both so obsessed that we will be dead tired getting home from a gig or something at midnight and still go out and play well past 2. were known in her apt complex as the two who live on the tennis court. i have no shame, however

Where could you play well past 2? Super late night tennis sounds great to me. Latest I've ever played is midnight though. Never seen a place open later than that.

omg it's awesome! the courts at her complex have lights that operate at any time of day or night on a timer (that can be reset as often as you like) and no locked gate or anything to get on the court. other GREAT thing about the courts? the "woods" surrounding the courts shade the courts by 5/5:30....anyone who plays in florida knows what a big deal that means, especially when it's a hot sunny day!

ohh and ONE MORE THING...the lights were just recently replaced and are not those crappy yellow lights that are like 15 feet above the court and point straight down. the court gets as bright as your average club court

I second all that... I am devoted to the game. I read about this tennis boot camp in Florida that trains people for the pros... check it out. 6 hours of intense tennis a day, 5 days a week, 4 hours of footwork drills and conditioning for the remaining two days. When you're not actually playing, 4 hours a week is learning and analyzing technique and strategy. Basically, you eat, sleep, and breathe tennis for two weeks.

My friends think I'm crazy. My best friend looks at it and goes, "That's torture. How could anyone do that much tennis?" And I go, "It sounds like so much fun!!!! I wanna do it so bad!"

I'm pretty sure I'd keep playing tennis even if I was on the point of collapse from exhaustion and dehydration:twisted:

That's RIGHT!!!!! Never feel ashamed for living on the court! I wish I could!!!

Sounds fabulous. Lights on timers are a great thing for everbody. My town has lights on from like 7-11 or so, which is a waste of electricity for the many nights no one at all is using the courts, and a frustration for people who might want to play later than that.

When I am at work, I walk past the tennis aisle at sports authority and check out the cool racquets every time...never gets old. Then I think about playing, play on my days off, but I always make free time for partying and trying to pick up chicks.

Not to rain on everybody's parade as I was moderately obsessed with tennis at one point, but consider:

1) Are you using your obsession with tennis to mask or ignore some other issues in your life?

2) Tennis ultimately is a game. Is being obsessed with any game truly healthy long term? I suppose if you are making your living off tennis that would be one thing, but most of us are not.

1.) Yes, but who cares

2.) Is being obsessed with any game truly healthy long term? Yes

...

I'm kidding, I'm kidding....I'm sure some people are maybe overboard....but the way I look at it, there are a LOT worse things to spend your time doing.

It involves, Fitness, Health, Personal Mental/Emotional Strength, Perserverance, and Socializing.

im obsessed, but it doesnt help me hide from things, it helps me deal with them. the time spent away from "real life" recharges me for dealing with it. like mentioned above, tw is like crack. for me its the usta tournament schedule that gets me. i look at all the tournaments and decide which ones i'm playing and i quite literally almost p1ss my pant. i have to go straight to the bathroom. there is a tournament in a couple of months in the poconos that whenever i think about it, i have to run to the can. good weekend vacation in addition to tennis -- pure heaven! i can be so much more productive when i know the reward is tennis.

Your former coach is a pompous idiot. One day, if you have even average intelligence (which I'm assuming you have), you will realize that and laugh softly to yourself.

You're not stupid or crazy-I was once like you. Don't stop what you're doing or thinking the way you think-nature will eventually take care of that.

Me too, I'll sit here and stare at racquets and shoes for hours.

1) No, not really. I have friends, good grades, everything. I'm just in love with the game that much. I feel truly at home on the tennis court.

2) Oh no, don't misunderstand me. I am obsessed with the game, but I have my priorities straight. Academics take top honors with me. I plan to be a neurosurgeon or heart surgeon when I grow up, and I want to go to Harvard or the University of Pennsylvania. Just because I'm obsessed doesn't mean I don't understand what's really important in life. I work really hard at school and do have straight A's. Tennis is important to me, but school is always first in my books.

to me, tennis is more than just a game for two, controversial reasons.

one, if i wasnt playing tennis i honestly would be doing absolutely nothing else. now thats a generalization, but learning tennis took no productive time out of my day. the counter argument is to do something productive with that time. yes, true. but at least getting exercise is better than sitting around watching movies, no? im a procrastinator, what can i say? i still get my work done and stay prepared for gigs.

secondly, it was a key in my falling in love with my girlfriend. she taught me the sport as i taught her to be herself and be more confident. i used tennis as a way to make her question her life and how she was raised. i like to think that she's become a stronger person through playing with and teaching me specifically.

im fine with being obsessed with that
