Welrd, she is identified as a Japanese tennis player but has been in the US since she was 3 years old.
Sounds like USTA did or didn't do something to upset her.

They offered pretty much nothing so he then asked the Japanese federation and they offered her full support after evaluating her. At that same point in time the USTA Player Development people made the decision to throw full support behind Ci Ci Bellis instead. Guess those decisions did not work out as they intended.

OMG..I really didn’t know that much about her at all. Just noticed she was a good player until she won the US open then expected her to do good here. But from 72 to 1 winning three tournaments two of which are grand slams is an amazing rise.

Being born in Japan she has the right to decide which country to choose as her main citizenship.
She could have lived there just one day , it still wouldn't have made a difference.
Those are the rules that the WTA uses.

Yeah I had the same sentiments as you did a couple of months ago.
I said "WTF, Japanese?"

But then I did some research and learned something new.
I learned that it matters little how you look, or where you have lived for most of your life.

All that matters is where you were born, and then where YOU decide where your citizenship should be for the WTA.
The WTA will take whichever country YOU decide to go with (as long as you have citizenship there).

Congratulations Naomi. After I saw the draw, especially Su-Wei, Sevastova, Svitolina, Serena, Halep and Pliskova, my shoulders slumped on how far she would go. I didn't expect much, so glad I was proven wrong and she believes in her capabilities. What growth these two weeks has been for her especially coming from sets down and losing match points. What a champion.

Must we keep going over this, it makes sense she plays for Japan (or Haiti) being she has Japanese blood. USTA fell in love with Christina McHale.

Honestly, I did not expect her to win even though I voted on the AO poll her as champion. Now that she has 2 GS, she can fall off a cliff and it would still be a huge accomplishment.

Same with the Australian women commentator, Jelena Dokic, she is from Serbia but represented Australia and now lives there. Again, Osaka was born in Japan, anyone who is claiming she is American right now is simply back tracking and regretting she didn't represent the US and its all because of her wins.
