Osaka retiring?

Jabeur says hi.
Had she won Wimbledon I’d say yes but currently I have faith in swiatek and swiatek alone. Makes me think the likes of halep, kerber, Petra, Vika, li Na, aga in their prime were much better and they were referred to as headcases because they couldn’t challenge Serena.

Not everyone is cut out to be a legend in their sport. Roger, Rafa, Novak, Serena have trillions of dollars and could retire anytime they wanted to. They're chasing more than just money. Ever since the WTA matched ATP prize money, it's never been easier for a solid female athlete to make millions. It's rather amazing to see professional female basketball and volleyball players waste their time in sports that pay nothing when they could be playing pro tennis and own the field and make millions. If you're an American with a tall daughter that is athletic and putting them into another sport but tennis, WTF are you even thinking?
Why would Americans need to be tall when the rest of the world can have borderline little people reach the top?

True, Coco Vandeweghe has made about 7 million plodding around the court making two slam semi-finals, while the top WNBA players make around 200k a year.

She's worth about 50 million dollars. Unless she squanders her fortune or gets involved in terrible investments, she's set for life. And her current net worth won't remain stagnant.

oh Yeah, should be easy to live nicely for the rest of her days. Well not if she’s is as bad in business as trump but if she’s as good as a monkey she should be fine

We should be in a strong era with Barty, Osaka, Swiatek, and a healthy Andreescu having legendary battles. Will anyone else step up to fill the void? I have doubts about Rybakina's staying power, but hopefully I'm wrong about her.

No-one cares about Andreescu. Her slam results have been 1R, 2R, 2R, 2R, 1R, 1R, 4R, 2R and 2R outside of her USO win.

It's worse than Raducanu's slam resume.

Osaka is clearly unhappy with the pressures of being a successful tennis professional. She seems disinterested in working on her game and it appears that should she continue then her winning ways will be limited to hard court tournaments as she has shown no interest in seriously competing on clay and grass courts. I am still furious with Serena's terrible behavior in their U.S. Open final from which it appears Osaka's problems most likely originated.

The WTA seems to be floundering with its champions being either 1 slam wonders or taking the money and retiring early rather than being loyal to the tour that made their success possible.

Please. Enough with all the drama surrounging her. I liked her attitude when she was with Adidas and wasn´t a "star" yet.

Did it start when she became political and started wearing BLM masks and George Floyd stuff or it began before that with the firing of Sascha Bajin?

Maybe she wants to become an Instagram influencer.

Naomi Osaka has parted ways with her coach and her whole strength and conditioning team, and there are rumors abounding on social media that she's played her last match. Could she really be retiring at the age of 24?!
Is the YT channel TENNIS FRENZY your source, by any chance?

I hope it isn't, because it's one of the worst tennis channels, totally useless, yellow press nonsense.

No source, as I'm not claiming any specific knowledge/ news here, but my post was sparked by SI's Jon Wertheim's (of Strokes of Genius fame) implications and the ensuing chatter about it on Twitter.

Sounds pretty unreliable and iffy, too weak to open a thread for...

excuse me? How is the arguable goat even remotely comparable to Osaka?
I was merely referring that people were denegrating Osaka for retiring "so early" and yet Bjorn pretty much did the same.....and as you so point out, is considered a "goat" contender. Point being age not accomplishment.

ah ok, fair enough. Borg did win 11 slams before retiring though. But yes, I see your point

on a side note. Kournikova is same age as Fed, and she retired like 20 years ago. Got nothing to do with the topic but just a fun fact

Tennis is a very expensive sport, playing basketball and volleyball costs nothing.

“Umm…like, you know like…ummm…”

Adios…don’t let the door hit you in the azz on the way out!
Sheltered little princess. Entitlement and victim mentality en masse.

What at first mostly seemed like awkward shyness turned out to be introverted narcissism.

Still, an education couldn't have hurt. They should have at least forced her to finish Secondary School... If she speaks this way in her native language then how bad must her Japanese be? I could even understand if she were 12, but come on, she's in her 20s already.

Excellent player and woman of great moral character who seems to be developing a stellar career outside of tennis as well. She does seem to inspire hostility, but people can be petty.

I rather see her retire than witnessing her emotional roller coasters every day. It's very clear that she is lacking the fire for motivation she once had. And once that is gone in professional sports, you are done anyway.

Ash Barty just picked up stumps, and she was a model of good behaviour, so if Osaka can battle through her difficulties then so much the better than simply quitting.
