Predict 2023 for Ruud

He’s actually fairly consistent despite the nonstop bashing from people here (me included). He just seems to lack that killer instinct against the tippy top guys. 2 slam finals and WTF finalist, at the very least he’s shed the “clay court specialist” title from him, he’s pretty good on hard courts too. He’s taken monumental steps in 2022 and now it’s come down to winning the big tournaments.

But then you could also say that most of the tour was poor except for Alcaraz. Djokovic poor first half, Nadal poor second half, Tsitsipas and Medvedev struggled, Zverev out the entire season. Really nobody was amazingly good this year. So where does this leave him?

He was underestimated for good reasons before those 3 finals, though.

Before the WTF, he lost to Wawrinka, Nishioka, Musetti and Munar. Who could imagine he would beat in form Felix and Rublev after being destroyed 6-2 6-3 by Munar in Tokyo?

Before the USO, he had a terrible grass season. He lost 6-3 6-3 against Bryan Shelton in the 1st round of Cincinnati. Was hard to predict a USO final when there were players like Nadal, Medvedev, Alcaraz, Sinner and Kyrgios in the draw.

Before Rome, he lost to Dimitrov in Monte-Carlo, Carreno in Barcelona and Lajovic in Madrid. Even the Semifinal in Rome didn't convince me he would make the final of the French Open.

I have nothing against him but I hope some players who struggle against him (like Rune, Rublev, Hurkacz, Auger-Aliassime,...) will figure him out. IMO he is a solid top-15, maybe a top-10 player. But he should never be world number #2 or #3 again. I wish him success and I wish him to win a Slam one day, but he isn't the kind of player I wanna see in the top-5 long-term... jmo

I think he wins his first masters next year. I don't think he is making a slam next year though. At RG he really benefited from everyone being stacked into one section of the draw, leaving his side very open.

USO was a great effort, but I think things will get back to normal next year, expect Djokovic, Medvedev, Zverev back properly in the mix, along with Alcaraz, improved Sinner, Rune, FAA etc.

Well, if he gets Moutet, injured Berretini and Khachanov , he will again make the USO 23 finals and will make us realize what a HC monster he is.

He's been called the Ferrer of this generation. Although I do believe that Ferrer with the Norwegian's firepower would be a big pain for Big3 due to his excellent mental toughness.

I think he'll win some 500 and a Masters next year, prob continue reaching slam SF/F as I feel like Tsitsipas is about to go off the boil even more next year, so he'll probably eat some of his lunch (ie: Monte Carlo etc...)

Ferrer had about a dozen wins over prime Djokodal + Murray. I don't think Ruud is going to get that many even against the older Djokovic & Nadal.
Ferrer played 70+ matches against Rafnolandy. And most of his wins were before 2011 (Ferrer 29 y.o.) . Ferrer was 4 and 5 years older than those 3 too.
5-16 vs Nole
6-26 vs Rafa
6-14 vs Murray
17-56 combined

Way too many people here underestimating Ruud. He's still a young player who made significant strides this year. With a strong work ethic and ability to bounce back from losses and injuries to set new goals for himself, Ruud's potential is immense.

He doesn't have the right mentality...you have to be warrior ready to kill to win slams! The guy is too non-chalant for that...he lacks competitive spirit! his skills might improve with time, but he is too timid to be gs champion!...

He proved us all wrong this year, not least at the WTF.

I think he will work really hard, keep improving his strategies and fitness and be patient about the results. He is just 23 and he is more mature than most players his age. I think he is very process oriented and knows there are limits to what he can control.

I am not sure his results improve, but I am certain his game will.

The problem is with his personality! he is just not a warrior! Too calm, timid and non-chalant! You don't win slams with that attitude...well there is only one person, who could, but he is one in a million...

Confidence can be built through fitness, experience and technical/ tactical improvements. He is still an improving player.

He played with a more "warrior" like arsenal last year. This year, he sacrificed some power for more consistency and his results improved. TT expects young players to go from zeros to heroes. That almost never happens. It's mostly hard work.

he wont diddly squat this year. for all his progress, what does he have to show for it.
some mickey mouse 250s?
yes he reached many finals but didnt capitalize.
frustrating , since im Norwegian too

He is perfectly poised to start winning big titles next year. My prediction would be multiple m1000 and ATP500s.

In terms of majors, the AO surface is so dead and lifeless that it really doesn’t suit his game, but he should fare well again at USO, and at RG he is a guaranteed QTR finalist at a minimum imo.

We are at the start of what should be something close to a Hall of Fame career and it is very fun to watch it unfold because Ruud is such a calm, likeable guy on court.

lol yeah, and "winning the prize seremony with great speeches" - start fighting on the court instead you MUG
The funny thing is the entire field is mug too. As he beat the likes of FAA, Rublev fairly easily and also just edged Taylor fritz. The irony is fritz gave a bigger fight and FAA would've done so than Ruud did. Tennis all about match ups and Ruud matches up with big 3 so tamely. Fritz even put away Nadal whereas Ruud lost to him in straight sets.

And who did Ruud have to beat to make his 2nd major final?, Khachamug!

Casper ferrer will win nothing again. And no, 250s doesn't count.
15 and counting, but not counting...

Apparently, he cannot beat Nadal or Mr. Pyramid. (He was also 0-1 against Fed.)

So, if both of those two get knocked out, he has a good chance to win something big.
He's 0-2 v Alcaraz :-D

Both Nadal and djok were out in uso. He made the finals Though

Ferrer never made two slams and an ATP Finals finals in the same year, + finishing #3 in the rankings one month shy of turning 24 years old as well.
Ferrer never played in the asterisk era. Prime Ferrer definitely could reach 2 slam finals this year with a good draw.

Maybe AO on Nadal's side, FO on Ruud's side, USO on Ruud's side.

Whether he'd be able to deliver is a different story as he has a long story of underperforming in big matches.

More finals losses probably. Hes does great getting there but hes completely lost on the big stage and I don't see it changing as he has no real weapon and Plan B. I dont want to see the guy in any more finals. I want a competitive finals

I don’t know about Ruud but I do believe that at the gym, @Hitman listens to survivors “burning heart” when he works on his quads, “the moment of truth” when training biceps. He listens to Kenny Loggins’ “danger zone” when doing squats, “meet me halfway” when he’s on the bike. While opening his bottle of protein drink and preparing to go home, like a true child of the 80s……Survivors “ever since the world began”. :D

If he improves his BH and forecourt game and plays more agressive, he can bag a slam. he's just 23 and i believe he will get better and win a slam or two in future.
