Predictions for 2017 end of year rankings? Here's mine..

Here are my rough predictions for how the rankings could look at the end of 2017. (I tried a search but the function gave an error).

1. Murray (12000) - (probable 2 slam winner, at least 3 slam finals, most consistent player on tour)
2. Djokovic (10500) - (probable slam winner, Mr consistency, but scattered defeats leave him short)
3. Raonic (6000) - (another slam final, a masters win, and continues to develop all round game)
4. Nishikori (5000) - (possible slam final, but not quite enough weapons to challenge the top - best of the rest)
5. Thiem (4500) - (adds some consistency to his game/goes deeper in slams and masters)
6. Nadal (Way past his peak but has enough to to challenge for the French, a couple 500's and maybe a clay masters)
7. Wawrinka (starts to decline/doesn't win slam)
8. Federer (not much to defend/rises significantly/wins a few 500's and goes deep in slams)
9. Cilic (consistent top 10 form)
10. Kyrgios (inconsistent yet always improving)
11. Dimitrov (as above - potential Dimitrov 2.0)
12. A.Zverev (top level breakthrough year)
13. Monfils (lots to defend and you never know what you're going to get)
14. Goffin (Not quite the top 10 player but consistent)
15. Pouille (struggles to improve on last year/maintains form)
16. Berdych (on the decline/drops below some next gens)
17. Sock (gaining some consistency - the 'top 20' version of Cilic)
18. Bautista Agut (maintains steady form)
19. Del Potro (picking and choosing events, not enough physically to push back towards the top)
20. Edmund (halves his ranking every year and best of the 'tier 2' next gens - wins a 250)

Other notables..

21. Gasquet (another player on the slight decline)
25. Tomic (has another little boost this year but still wildly inconsistent)
26. Khachanov (pokes his nose around the top 20 ready for an assault in 2018)
28. Evans (plays a full year on tour and gains points as a result)
33. M.Zverev (boosted by his brothers form and unique style)
36. Vesely (back to his best and pushes up the rankings)
45. Fritz (new career high peak and beats a few top 20 players along the way)

So there you go. I'm quite the geek, and I did this to kill 30 minutes and thought I'd post it to see what others thought and to see what predictions they have too.

You don't need to go as in depth/explain as much as me, but a quick justification for any out the box thinking would be interesting.

Lets see your top 10 predictions..

1:Murray
2: Zverev
3: Dimitrov
4: Djokovic
5: Raonic
6: Wawrinka
7: Federer
8: Nishikori
9: Thiem
10: Cilic.

Ask me in a months time and it might be very different. Anyway, I'm expecting Murray to have a strong year up to Wimbledon, then struggle but do well enough to retain the number 1 ranking. The ranking points to be much more compressed than they have been in recent seasons. Zverev to win the USO which is the basis of his number 2 ranking. Dimitrov ranking based on him being the best player aged 23-28...even though his achievements haven't always reflected his ability.

How does it look after the events of the last two days?

Not sure if you referred to me or the post above, but it did make me think I was a little too harsh on Federer and Stan given their form this week. I'd bump both up a place and I think Raonic is a good shout for the AO (providing he gets through today, currently 2-1 up).

Thanks for the update; I actually meant in general. The early departure of Murray and Djoker may not be felt point-wise short term but it gives at least a glimmer of hope to potential pretenders to the throne. Nadal and Roger are adding points that few predicted they'd get a few weeks ago

What you've mentioned there is what I think is the key to first time slam winners or potential number ones. People harp on about it being a weak era/generation, but if there are 2/3 guys dominating at any one time, they'll have done well to make it to a final, let alone win a slam. Having the top 2 out is the type of window any emerging player must take advantage of if they want to take over in the future.

2017 is the first real chink in the armour of the 'big 4' and it wouldn't surprise me if we see several players surge up the rankings with added confidence and optimism.

Similar to boxing. When nobody could lay a glove on Klitschko, it was seen as a weak era.. yet he was just too good and dominant. As soon as Fury beat him, other boxers popped up and are licking their lips at getting a shot at one of the titles.

We tend to jump to huge conclusions in a space of a day.

Give it till after the French Open to make bold conclusions but I think Murray won't finish Number 1 but will finish at least 3rd or 4th.

Kyrgios retires to concentrate on his other interests otherwise probably not short of the mark, love to see Evans keep his current form throughout a season.

I'm pretty sure I heard someone say the other day Evans skipped the whole ATP clay court season last year, so if that's the case he should gain decent points over the next 6 months at least.

That is a bold conclusion.. Murray would pretty much have to do a Federer, and have 6 months off to drop from 11000 points to the 5000 mark usually associated with 3 or 4 in the world.

Injury or unexpected events aside, I can't see either Murray or Djokovic dropping to number 3 for at least another 2 years. Not unless someone else pops up and enters 2011 Novak mode out of nowhere.

I'll be honest, I found this highly amusing :D

Fed at 1, Rafa at 2 and Bautista Agut in the Top 10?! I'll be gifting you racquets if this proves true :p

Well I think this could be the year where the big 4 go back to 1-4 ranking.

Also I think it would be a major surprise if Djokovic won't be #1 at the end of the year. Who else should it be? Nadal and Federer don't have the needed consistency anymore to be #1 (even if they still can win a Slam) and Murrays 2016 season was an exception. He likely won't show this consistency again.

Maybe this year the #1 won't have 12.000-15.000 points like in the last years, but Djokovic will have 8.000-10.000 and that could Be enough this year to be #1 in the end.

Awesome, I can't wait for that :D I would seriously be happy for Rafa and Fed if they could deliver another great season. It's not much of a prediction, but it's something I'd like to see one more time. ;)

No, he'll just have to keep sucking. Nobody's rewarding you with points based on what you did more than a year ago. You keep it up the following year, or those points trickle away month by month.

Christ, I should have created this thread 10 days later! Although I did say this..

Oh, Hi Roger.
