He really is different than 5 or 6 years ago. Nice to see him speak his mind.and be honest about how painful it is to lose, and the talk about how unlucky Rafa has been with injuries.

These two have so much respect and admiration for each other, for all the things that make them so different, they are just so alike. If only some their fans could see it, I know many do, but it is clear so many, still don't, and this whole obsession that I must be on the winning side, I am on the GOAT team, has caused so much bickering and resentment. I saw it again in the semis thread. They play to entertain us, enjoy it, sure get emotionally invested, there is nothing wrong with being passionate...but seriously, do you all remember why you first fell in the love with the game...how many would say they fell in love with the game just so they can hate on someone they don't really know.

Two great champions, two great friends. We really should enjoy these final few moments they are giving us, because once it is gone, it is gone for good.

It's more usual that players of their age and stature become friends, just like people do in other careers after time even if once they were rivals.

As people age things get put into perspective. Not always, McEnroe and connors don't speak, Sampras and Agassi don't, but in some ways that says something about them as individuals.

Federer and Djokovic I would think will end up on pretty good terms eventually even if things have been more difficult between them. I don't see the big surprise here.

Good point. I suppose one disadvantage of being famous is that your bad moments become frozen in time. I admire both Fed and Nadal in that, despite the fact they could both surround themselves with sycophants and never change, they seem over the years to have continued developing as human beings.

Fed is now 36 and has some experience being a father. He is just STARTING to realize what is really important in life.

I think Nadal has always been a bit "older" in the area of empathy. I don't believe life has been quite so easy for him, so he's likely about as mature as Fed, already.

I'd be very surprised if these two men do not become even closer as they approach the end of their careers, perhaps a bit like JMac and Borg.

Don't be surprised if Novak gets more respect if he makes a comeback. I don't think he was fully appreciated when he was on top. Fedal has been fun this year, but hasn't it seemed just a bit empty without Djokovic around?

I agree. There is a reason why there is a saying that you don't truly appreciate something until it is gone. Fedal is great, but Djokovic has the been the rock of the last 10 plus years, always there, his presence has been missed, and the tennis world is not ready to let him go just yet.

I didn't enjoy tennis too much around 2011 because it became boring and predictable for me, the same during Novak's GS. But I felt the same way, mostly during Fed's early years, other than waiting for Nadal to push back, and mostly on clay.

But I want to see Novak come back. I'm a sucker for underdogs!

I didn't realize I'd feel that way, but frankly I would be VERY excited to see him reemerge again.

Yup.

When Wilander started losing, I was glad he was gone. Felt much the same way about Lendl, but I was a lot younger.

But I have to admit that I did not fully appreciate "Gumby" when he was in full flow, and we may never see another like him. For the most part he seems like a very likeable guy too.

I'm recording this match and I'll watch it when I wake up. I learned my lesson at the AO this year. That was just TOO stressful live!!!

OK. Lets all of us stop watching. Period. Lets see then how much money they make and how long the sport lasts and how many titles they can win. If we are not being entertained, we are not paying to watch, we are not buying what they are selling, business goes down, players out of a job.

It's like saying actor do not act to entertain us, they act to make money and movies.

That's right. All jobs are about making money first, everything else comes a distant second.
With your logic politicians are there for the "people" right and not for themselves ???

The only exception are people who work in the medical field.

You make money by making sure you have a customer. No customer, no business, no income, no money, lots of redundancies. Whens actors flop, it because no wants to watch them, they don't sell, so they lose work. Sport is basically real life TV with a competitive element, if people are not interested, it will not make money, and all those looking for a living will just have to go back to school or look for another job. You and I have different views on it. There is reason why Federer gets paid all that money just to show up, because he entertains, he sells tickets, so he in turn makes more money, if no one cared for him, his value would go down, no massive sponsors like Rolex etc.

He entertains because of his style of play which is completely natural for him not because he goes out there to entertain the crowd. They are 2 different things.

Actually as @abmk said, he's got the strategy right. Praise Rafa to heavens and act all chummy off court, and destroy him on court. I like. ;)
