Prince Phantom Pro and Phantom Pro100P

It had a prince poly (black) and I assume TW strings it mid tension. I hit semi western and rank myself a 4.0 level player. The power got to my head so much I began not following through and it derailed my game last few days. The graphite 100 just seems to allow bigger swings and not fear of over hitting. I must be doing something wrong if majority feel these PP100P’s are low powered.
The black Prince strings they normally use is Prince Premier Control which is a black multi, but looks like a poly. Try restringing it with a poly like Prince Tour XP, or whatever brand/kind you like at a tension of around 45 and you won't think that anymore.

I got two demos, one multi and one poly. The multi broke so I know for sure this is the poly one.

Just had another practice session with Christian Sigsgaard who plays for Texas Longhorns, and the Phantom Pro just really performed. This time I was using the racquet strung with Prince synthetic gut w/duraflex. The string played surprisingly well against the power flowing from Christian Sigsgaard's racquet. To give you an idea as to how hard and heavy the balls were coming at times, about two and a half years ago Christian had a win in a Davis Cup match against Georgia ( the country) over Nikoloz Basilashvili, who is playing against Rafa Nadal right at this moment at the US Open. I really liked the feel and control. Something that really made the frame standout was how well it absorbed all of that power and kept me in control of my shots during drills. I would recommend trying different setups until you get the feel and play that you are looking for.

Would the PP100 work better with Xcel 17 or Velocity 17? I'd imagine Velocity being the crisper and more powerful string.

Would the PP100P work better with Xcel 17 or Velocity 17? This is harder to guess.

I found PPC to work well in the PP100P. I know that wasn't a string you asked about, but maybe you can use it as a comparison.

The 6 gr. is a total with 3gr. at 3 o'clock and 3gr. at 9 o'clock. I have played with the Phantom Pro in stock form and feel that it played nicely. It is very good against any style as long as you have good technique. It offers slightly more stability and control with the extra weight. I can't compare it to the Phantom Pro 100P because I have never tried the P.

Great, thanks for the info.

I've demo'd all 4 phantom models and I felt that the 93p and PP100p were close to each other in power, but the PP100p was quite a bit easier for me to swing. I thought the Phantom 100 and the Phantom Pro 100 were significantly less powerful than both the 93p and the PP100p.

Is there a difference in launch angle between the PP100 and PP100P? Both appear to have the same size head, shape, and string pattern. I know there are other factors such as flex, power, and beam construction. Which one has a higher launch angle? I'd like a slightly higher launch angle than the 93P, but not so high as a Yonex EZONE DR98.

The PP100P definitely has a higher launch angle than the 93P...and more topspin. But it's also a bit more harsh on off-center hits for some reason and feels lighter but swings slower (the headlightness is less I think is why)

I've really come to enjoy this frame with a full bed of Cyclone Tour at 45lbs. I just had it restrung and the control, spin and power with fresh Cyclone Tour is really something. I think I played 20 hours before the strings went totally dead, although I should've changed them out before that.

Has anyone tried a full bed of natural gut? If so, how was it? What tension did you use?

It's a flexy frame so it doesn't provide power in the way that people who use stiffer frames are accustomed to. But if you combine a swingweight pushing 330 and some good racquet head speed you can make ample power. I have been alternating between a Textreme Tour 95 and an RF97, which are both stiffer frames with a lot of mass and even though the PP100P is a lot lighter than those two, I still get good power. I'm getting used to the different feel, but it really does give you more feedback.

Between the PP100 and PP100P, which one has the higher launch angle? I don't like too high of an angle. The power difference, I could always make up with string choice.

From all the players who tried the PP100P and PP 100, is there a huge difference in flexibility? Does the PP 100 play more forgiving on off center hits than the PP 100P?

Is there a huge difference in swing weight between both racquets?

I played with the PP 100P for 3 months with a Gosen Micro strung in the low 50’s and still found it a little jarring on off center hits.

Is there a racquet made that isn't jarring on off center hits? I certainly haven't come across one. Once you start playing with pace, the tennis ball's momentum can easily twist any racket struck near the frame.

I think because player's frames always promote swinging through the ball vs brushing it with spin oriented power frames, you are going to get more energy transfer into the frame on off center hits. Fortunately the flex of these frames helps absorb a lot of that energy and protects your arm. But it's going to feel more jarring for some.

I don't think that was meant to be an absolute statement but a relative one. I.e., "more than current racquet or other racquets they've tried".
Some do have more than average vibration on off-center hits. E.g., the PP100P has more than the 93P but twists more from the P100 which has more of an off-center vibration

All I can say is that I don't find either of my PP100P's to be very jarring at all, and I'm not professing to hit the center of the string bed more than most people! lol

If you find the PP100P to be jarring, try dropping tension by a few pounds. I had it strung at 50lbs. and off-center hurts were very noticeable and not in a good way. At 45 lbs., there's almost no feedback.

The PK 5G and 7G are not jarring with off center hits. I think the stiffness rating on PP 100P feels a bit higher than 59. The racquet is quite low powered even with a synthetic string around 50 lbs. I think part of the problem for me is that my shoulder.. can’t handle working so hard to generate a lot of pace.

I play synthetic and I won't go higher than 48lb. Maybe summer time 48lb is OK but colder temps I'd go closer to 45lb.

For some reason the PP100P does not like to be strung high. I have one of mine strung at 35 with a soft poly, but even with Prince Premier Control (multi) I won't go too much higher than 45. Give it a try! What's the worst that can happen besides you still not liking the frame. I think finding out is with the cost of a string job.

I thought the PK 5G was more jarring than the Prince Phantom 100. Didn't like it at all when I was looking for an arm friendly racket. But I rarely like a racket's feel on off center hits. They all are jarring in some fashion.

I really try not to mishit and when I do, I'm so upset at myself for not watching the strike zone that I rarely notice what the racket felt like.

I never tried the regular Phantom. The 5G is one of the most comfortable racquets that I have played with besides the Volkl C10 which is probably one of the best players frames made. I use a synthetic string in my racquets.

For some reason it felt harsh and tinny to me. I preferred the Q+ Tour much more.

Oops I just realized I'm mixing up the 5G and Ki 5. I've never tried the 5G. The Ki 5 was not for me. So you may well be right that the 5G is awesome all around even on mishits.

The Ki5 was too stiff... Like most of PK's racquets after the 5G.... They figured the kinetic system would let them make everything more stiff but still arm friendly

I broke strings way too often when I played the pc100. That was a 18 18 pattern. The reason I left it. I play tour 18 20s now and head velocity lasts me a long time. Could anyone here compare the string pattern of the pp100p to the pcg100? If they are about the same then I need not mess with the phantom stick at all.

I had a light stint with pcg100 and im pretty sure the spacing on the phantom 100p is much tighter and dense towards the middle. In fact it is very tight for 16 18. I remember thr pcg100 to be very grippy on the ball.

Yeah, I'd agree with these statements. The PP100P to me feels like a suped up version of the PCG100. More head mass, noticeable pop, and tighter string pattern. But still more open than the 18x20s. That and the flex and balance of the 18x20s sets them apart. I wish we'd get an update of the 18x20s. The regular phantom is cool and all, but not the same (single tear).

Thanks Cubed...that is what I was thinking after reading all of these posts. I could go to a 18/16 if it was failry closed. I could always use 15l strings because I use multis. I would like to eventually switch to a stick that does not have ports just because they are a pain for me to string on my old stringer. I have even thought about demoing the srixon tour stick. The 93p was nice but I need a tad more real estate. I probably should have just kept the two I had and made myself play with them all season. Oh well. The orange tours are with me still.

Both 16x18 I believe, though I didn't compare them side by side to see if they were the *same* 16x18 pattern. I will say that the PP100P felt a little more flexy (in a positive way) to me than my PCG100, and was lighter than the PCG100, but felt to me like it had as much or more power and plow than the PCG100.

I liked the Oxford when I played with it. I just broke strings too much. My tours are heavier and are more stable than the POG was. With leather and a wee bit of lead at 3 9, they come in at 12.3 and very headlight. I do not break strings in that stick and I love the flex. Hell, I like the ports but I don’t like stringing them. I may demo the p100p and maybe even the Dunlop srixon tour. I will probably end up staying put.

@ashridge do you prefer the PP100P over the PP100? I was leaning towards the PP100P, but read that it has a higher launch angle than the PP100. I guess I could use a stiffer multi like Velocity or X-One with the flexier and lower powered PP100. Probably the latter since everyone seems to think the PP100 is way under powered.

I played the diablo mp years ago and really liked it. I felt the phantom pro 100 played very similiar but with a bigger sweetspot. BUT, the diablo i owned was quite a bit lighter than the advertised specs. But i liked that. I think u should demo both the 100 and the 100P.

In *stock* form, yes, I absolutely preferred the PP100P over the PP100. One thing I will say, though, is that both demos came from TW strung very high with Prince Premier Control and I'm not sure either racquet was at it's best with that set-up. I've been told that PP100P really shines more with lower tension stringing. I did feel that the PP100 had a bigger sweet spot than the PP100P, but again, I've been told that with lower string tension the PP100P feels much improved in that regard. I could generate faster swing speed with the PP100, but definitely more power and plow from the PP100P. I'd be very interested to see how the PP100 felt if leaded up to the same swingweight and similar balance as the PP100P is in stock form.

I added weight at 3 and 9 o'clock and the feel, power and plow through all improved. I added TW's 3gr.tungsten tape at 3 and 9 making a total of 6 gr. I would like to warn against adding too much in the beginning. A good start would be about 4gr. total. I never counter balance the frame because I like the feel of a little weight in the head when the frame is so light ( 305 gr). String low with a multi and enjoy the feel and playability.

Tommy Haas

@Hayward Butler did you add tungsten tape to the PP100P or PP100?

@ashridge I think if the PP100 was leaded up, it would be even more flexible feeling, like adding weight to a plastic ruler. The more weight and further it's added, the more it'll bend on hard hit balls because the frame would take longer to snap back.

Awesome! What did you get it strung with?
To my surprise it came strung with a string from Prince that I do not know which is. And I had not even asked to come strung. Anyway, I will practice hitting on the wall, because I can not play properly due to an injury.
Lastly, is amazing as the PP100P's beam is thin compared to my Ultra 100.:D

Most likely duraflex 16 at mid tension... .which is going to feel really low on power. Just be prepared for it.

Just had a practice session with one of my best students who plays first and sometimes second singles for Texas Longhorns, Christian Sigsgaard. We had to play on a fast indoor carpet due to rain. I was using the Phantom Pro weighted with 6 gr. at 3 and 9 o'clock and strung with HDX at 21kg ( 45 lbs). This is actually an update on my previous review. I must admit this stick just seems to get better and better . From the baseline this stick is just so control oriented and super stable with the added weight. The TW tungsten tape is just the best, sticks well and looks like a natural part of the paint scheme. I was surprised as to just how comfortable the Phantom Pro played when hitting with a big hitter like Christian. The frame was also super maneuverable even with the added weight. Flat shots were easier to control than I expected due to the speed of the court. This session was special because of the caliber of player and the speed of the court. Previous test were done on slow red clay and synthetic grass, both slower surfaces. I look forward to testing the Pro with Technifibre X-One biphase.
Power from the Pro with this setup is really good as well. I will try and post some pictures of them soon.
Have you tried lead at 12 instead of 3-9 to increase plow and power? Can you compare pro 100 to the old tour 100 with ports in terms of power and stability in stock form?

Does anyone have a picture of the PP100's cardboard? @Mkiske post of his PP100P with cardboard was the first I've ever seen. I'd like to know what the PP100's says on it. I haven't even seen the cardboard from my 93P. The store where I bought it from, throws all their cardboards away.
