Question about double hits.

Forgive my ignorance, but I just cant remember the rule. I play against a guy who 5-6 double hits a match. And amazingly they always seem to fall in.

By double hit, I am talking about taking a legitmate swing at the ball and having it hit off one side of your frame, then bouncing off another side and then over the net. Cleary, it is not intentional, but he seems to have it happen alot. Like I said, it always falls in, but has some horrific spin on it. I would much rather call it an illegal hit and not have to return it.

Thanks.

Get used to dealing with the crazy spin...

"A player is permitted only one swing at the ball. Any intentional second swing is not permitted. Sometimes, during the stroke the ball may hit the strings/racket two times. If the player did this in one motion and there is no attempt at an intentional second hit, then that is a legal shot. This rule was changed in the 1970s from no double hits, whether intentional or not, to the above procedure."

Yep, and same with a "carry" - right. You can't intentionaly "catch and throw" the ball (with your racquet), but if it accidentaly hangs up on your racquet a moment in the midst of a single stroke and then goes over, that's ok.

Well, crap.

hahah, well it will take a ton of footwork when you see these shanks. Make sure to do small steps to get into position, and return that ball with heavy spin and deep. It sounds like he isnt that consistent so maybe you should play more conservative against him. :???:

Lol, yup I know some guys that get he perfect drop shots from these double hits. You'll be glad though when one just happens to go your way. Also it's hard to intentionally hits those, I've tried, doesn't work.

Listen for the sound of his contact. When you detect a mis-hit, make an extra effort to get yourself to the best possible position for something unexpected (such as a wild kick or side bounce). Don't take a large backswing & don't try to attempt a low % winner = don't try to blast the ball. If you try to do so, you'll probably end up horribly off-balance & may whiff the attempt. Instead, set up for a safer, moderate shot.

Oh wow, I was under the impression that a double hit, intentional or not, was illegal. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for replies.

Hot Sauce...I will be in Vancouver this August for the World Police Fire Games. We are playing at the Burnaby Sports Complex from August 2 -8. If you have any interest in hitting a little, we might be able to get together.

so is it only a double hit or can the ball hit the strings/frame more than twice in one swing and still be legal?

Anything more than 1 hit is called a double-hit. You don't have to actually count the hits. Life's too short as it is.

If he double hits, the spin is likely gonna be unpredictable. Which means don't anchor your weight on either foot before the ball bounces so you can see what the ball's trajectory is gonna be like after the bounce. Otherwise you'll lose balance and won't be able to take advantage of the mishit.

That sounds awesome. However, right now I'm dealing with some injuries that I don't know when will heal, so I can't fully commit to anything. What level would you say you are?
