Rafael Nadal refuses to play doubles with Nick Kyrgios at charity event

I don't know if the article is correct or not.

The article claims that there were other plans and they didn't materialize due to Nadal's reluctance to play Nick.

Of course that they will put on the website a program that actually considers that. What you see on the website is not necessarily what the original plans were.

It will be interesting, if some journalist asks Nadal, if that was true.

I checked the schedule like a month ago and it has not been changed since then. Nadal was scheduled to play him in singles not doubles. The article lost credibility right there. There is no point discussing it.

I will have to take your word for what it is worth then.

I guess the interesting part is what were the scheduled doubles with the respective teams in them ("before and after").

Can you point me where they are mentioned.

Thanks!

EDIT: It is getting more and more exciting.

Not exciting at all. You are just clutching at straws for no good reason. Rafa, being the main attraction of the event certainly would have found a space in teh schedule if he was indeed supposed to play doubles as well. Besides it makes no sense for him to play both singles and doubles back to back. I am not sure what you are trying to prove even after getting an archived schedule. It is pretty clear that it was a made up tabloid news. Only people who read dailymail or new york post etc find such "news" interesting.

Could you point me where exactly it says who is supposed to play in the mixed doubles or not?

BTW. The first of the two captions that are made is from three days AFTER the incident. Did you know that?

EDIT: I am not "clutching at straws". I am checking whether you are correct or are pulling stuff out of somewhere.

Why do people find this hard to believe? If a guy from work talks something bad about you, would you team up with him for a project? Kyrgios twice has accused of Nadal for time wasting during matches which were broadcast around the world. If I was Nadal, I would've liked the guy to apologise for that little bit of back stabbing. It doesn't matter whether it is true or not, but you don't publicly say those things about your colleagues. I think Nadal doesn't like him since those incidences and Wawrinka incidence was just the final nail in the coffin.
can't tell if you're serious or not?
I can understand Rafa for not liking him for it, but there's nothing back stabbing about trying to get the umpire to uphold the rules of the game
(presuming Rafa was indeed going over the time limit as he probably has done that in 99,9 % of his matches)

If Kyrgios was asked in an interview what he thinks about Nadal taking time and said that, that would've been all right. Nadal wouldn't still like it, but you could say Kyrgios just gave his honest opinion. However, he just brought out Nadal out of the blue in a match between him and Gasquet. He did it again in another tournament again. Whether he is right or not, that's quite a cowardly thing to do. He shouldn't have mentioned Nadal's name there and then. That was like a school kid reporting his classmate.

ah, thought you were referring to matches between him and Rafa. Didn't notice in either of those cases. But being massively against Rafa's (and Isner's and Raonic's etc.) time wasting as it is, I can't really fault him for it without seeing how it was done. Rafa is the worst offender in this regard and deserves a mention in any conversation on time-wasting :D

I put up a video at post #62. You can check it out if you like.

cheers, will do
edit: have done. But feeling the way I do about Rafa constantly going above the time allowed and thus breaking the rules, I personally would love for more people to call him (and others) out on it. That's what it takes (or for umpires to finally enforce the rules) for changes to be made.
Obviously, Rafa being Rafa would have to get offended by this nevertheless.

Rafael Nadal: I didn’t refuse to play with Nick Kyrgios

By Marc Berman

August 30, 2015 | 2:46am

Rafael Nadal will have to be more accurate with his strokes than his memory.

The eighth-seeded Nadal said he didn’t decline to play “doubles’’ with tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios at John McEnroe’s kids charity event Wednesday at Randall’s Island and was never “asked.’’ The Post reported Nadal, fed up with Kyrgios’ recent behavior, refused to play with the Aussie. Nadal, however, may be clinging to semantics.

The Post — and other outlets — was emailed a media advisory Aug. 20 from McEnroe’s academy’s publicists promoting the event featuring a singles bout between Nadal and Kyrgios and a doubles battle featuring the McEnroe brothers.

Sources told The Post organizers rearranged the event because of Nadal’s reluctance to play Kyrgios in singles or doubles. Nadal faced Lleyton Hewitt in singles while Kyrgios was switched to the doubles event with the McEnroe brothers and late add Jonas Bjorkman.

A new advisory was sent out days later with Nadal-Hewitt.

“I was never supposed to play a doubles match,’’ Nadal said. “First, I was only supposed to play singles in the exhibition. That was wrong information. Second, I never knew I had to play against Kyrgios. I was told I was going to play Lleyton.’’

Nadal, who missed last year’s U.S. Open with a wrist injury and will open Monday night against Borna Coric, has been spotty this year and is not considered a serious contender. He was embarrassed in the second round of Wimbledon by qualifier Dustin Brown.

“We’ll see who the favorite is in a couple of weeks,’’ Nadal said. “That’s the real thing.”

Kyrgios will have to face No. 3 Andy Murray in the first round after getting a hard-luck draw. Kyrgios received sanctions for on-court taunting of Stan Wawrinka in Montreal, saying his girlfriend was getting “banged’’ by an Aussie compatriot.

“He’s a young guy and we all make mistakes,’’ Murray said. “I don’t think he’s a bad guy. … I think he likes playing on the big stages.’’

Maria Sharapova hasn’t played a regular match since Wimbledon, pulling out of the Open tune-ups because of assorted leg injuries and didn’t seem too excited about her chances of even reaching the semifinals and potentially facing Serena Williams.

“You have to be realistic and limit your expectations, but it’s never quite easy, because you’re a competitor,’’ she said.
The USTA released its schedule for Monday with the Open’s first match at Ashe Stadium between Ana Ivanovic and Dominika Cibulkova.

Venus Williams and Novak Djokovic also will be on the day card. This is the first year the entire first round is scheduled to be finished by Tuesday.
