Ranking the quality of Fedrs 11 Wimbledon finalists

Including his losses..

11. Marin Cilic 2017. Weeping Marin provided no opposition. OnIy a walkover could have handed Fedr an easier win.

10. Mark Phillopousis 2003. The Aussie was a big talent but against Fedr looked like a one dimensional servebot, could barely win a return point.

9. Roddick 2005. By this point it was clear Roddick was Fedrs bunny. He tried but not good enough.

8. Nadl 2006. Seeing Nadl in his first Wimbledon final was a curious thing. He did ok, won a set against the best version of Fed he faced in a Wimby final.

7. Nadl 2007. Stronger than the previous year, Fedrs performance was unconvincing by his standards, his squabble with hawkeye showing he was rattled.

6. Mury 2012. Mury looked to be in control after the first set but after Fedr played two superb points to break at the end of the second set the match changed. Mury played well but Fedr produced his best performance since the 2011 French Open.

5. Roddick 2004. Roddick started off on fire, playing an amazing first set with huge hitting. Despite his high level Federer was just a bit better, one of his tougher finals.

4. Djokovic 2014. A good, though not GOAT performance. A younger Fedr probably would have won this match.

3. Roddick 2009. No longer possessing the huge forehand from 2004, instead Roddick in this match displayed a more complete all round game. Threw away the second set and got broken only in the very last game, he at least provided Fedr with his toughest Wimbledon win.

2. Djokovic 2015. Excellent performance that was slightly too much for an old Fed. After an even first two sets Fedr faded away.

1. Nadl 2008. Nadls golden year on grass, has never played so well on the surface before or since. Fedr did well to push it to five and make it a classic.

Bring on the grass court season!

Federer wasn't old on 2014 and 2015 considering that he won 3 slam between 2017 and 2018, in particular on 2015 final Djokovic was simply untouchable.

Are u nutsssssssss????? How can a 5 seter Nadal in 07 be placed below a 4 setter Murray in 12 and a 4 setter roddick in 04????? One of the idiotic threads in recent time.

Lol at ranking 2007 Rafa that low. Easily too 5, arguably top 3. He won the fourth set and had a lot of break points in the fifth... It wasn't really that different to 2008, but Federer was a bit better and Nadal a bit, just a tiny bit worse in 2007.

It is a crime to have Nadal 2007 that low,He is at least top 4 and in argument for top2.For me:

1.Djokovic 2015
2.Nadal 2007
3.Nadal 2008
4.Roddick 2004
5.Djokovic 2014
6.Roddick 2009
7.Murray 2012
8.Roddick 2005
9.Nadal 2006
10.Scud
11.Cilic

Quality opposition to be fair. Really quality opposition.

Baby Nadal? Two serve bots? A crier? You betcha :p Seriously though I actually think #8 and #9 were pretty good performances overall, more than a decent level of play, 6.5-7 out of 10 IMO.

I'd be quite interested in seeing your list tbh.

I actually think you nailed it perfectly in order. #1-4 ATG level, #5-7 good, #8-9 ok, #10 boo, #11 yikes!.

You know Roddick was really good in that 2004 final. I’d probably put him 1st or second best level among Federer’s opponents. That serve +fh combo would overpower just about anyone.

I am still angry that Fedr forewent an opportunity to dish a 4th set breadstick to go with the 1st set bagel in the 2006 final.

Hate to admit it but 2015 Djokovic probably shades them all. 2008 Wapha is a 1A for me.

Hmmm. This got me thinking. 2008 Wimbledon trumps everything else. My order would be as follows

1. 2008 Nadal
2. 2015 Djokovic
3. 2007 Nadal
4. 2014 Djokovic
5. 2009 Roddick
6. 2004 Roddick
7. 2006 Nadal
8. 2012 Murray
9. 2003 Philippoussis
10. 2005 Roddick
11. 2017 Cilic

Something like that.

I sort of lurk here these days but...

Roddick 2004 is too low on your list. Backhand wasn't as good compared to 2009 (2009 Roddick's backhand was working against Federer), but his forehand, returning, and movement was better. He was playing a better version of Federer too, and almost went up two sets to one. Serving was about the same, and I don't think there was much of a difference in net play (correct me if I'm wrong). I'd expect 2004 Roddick to beat 2009 Roddick in 5 sets.

Djokovic 2014 also seems a little high. I think I'd put it just above Murray 2012. I think I agree with the rest of your placement though...

I think he's placed about right, he had a couple of lapses to go with his great periods of play. I think Roddick in 2004 hit higher peaks than arguably anyone else on the list but compared to say 2009 he wasn't as steady.

Justifying some of my choices, i was judging purely on how good the opponent was on the day. I thought Fedr played better in the 2004 and 2012 finals than the 2007 final. Nadal was good that day but he found another level in 2008. He was even serving bigger.

All a matter of opinion :D

You know when Fed fans complain about rain delays for Rafa these days... Rain helped Fred win that '04 final.

Anyway I think it's easier to start from the bottom here, as Cilic, Scud and '05 Roddick are definitely bottom 3 here.

For Rafa, Djoko and Roddick it's pretty clear to me which finals were better, etc. Murray is kind of hard to rate, and obviously Fed's own performance and matchup to the player in question is a bit of a confounding factor here.

Good thread! I see you took my FO idea and applied it to Wimby!

Here is my contribution:
Highest to lowest levels:
1. Djokovic 2015 (one of the highest levels tennis has seen)
2. Stakhovsky 2013 (jk)
Real number 2: Nadal 2008 (awesome grit from the bull)
3. Djokovic 2014 (Fed was lucky to take this to 5 really)
4. Roddick 2009 (Probably beats Fed had he not botched a volley in second set tiebreak)
5. Nadal 2007 (had Fed doubting himself seriously and had opportunities to break early in 5th)
6. Roddick 2004 (blitzed Fed in first set and a half but rain delay helped Fed regroup)
7. Murray 2012 (arguably takes Fed to 5 if roof hadn’t been employed)
8. Nadal 2006 (Fed at his peak and Rafa hadn’t yet learned how to play on grass)
9. Roddick 2005
10. Philipoussis 2003
11. Cilic 2017

2004 Wim F Roddick had a real crap spell at the start of the 2nd set (even though he managed to get both breaks back, but that shouldn't have happened) and choked up in the 4th (0/6 on BPs with a bunch of errors, then played a weaker service game to get broken). 2009 Wim F Roddick may not have had the same peak level, but his mentality was superb and he was able to maintain concentration until the very end besides that infamous botched volley (and the subsequent two points) in 2nd set TB. Basically, Roddick was more up and down in the 04 final, bigger peak with the FH but had a few suspect service games, while 2009 Roddick was extremely consistent on serve and didn't get broken until succumbing to sheer exhaustion in the 77th game of the match, and was still able to make use of Federer's mental dips to break him twice.

2004 Roddick probably beats 2009 Roddick because there wouldn't be any mental advantage/disadvantage, but with Federer, 2009 Roddick being mentally stronger in the final made a difference in the scoreline even if not the ultimate result.

He was old then, he still is old now.

That's like saying Nadal didn't suck in 2015-2016 because he has won 3 slams lately.

I agree with them all and in perfect order. Nadal 2008 is highly overrated. Fed choked and choked and choked some more after his demolition a month previously in Paris. Rafa did hang in there in the fifth and deserved the victory in any case. Djoker 2015 was an unbelievable level against a brilliant Fed coming to the final after one of his greatest-ever serving days in the semis. I think this is Djoker's highest level ever, even greater than his 2011 clay level.

Djokovic 2015 should not be number 1. So overrated. Any version of Nadal from years 2007/2008 was much tougher for Federer. The Federer that used the old racket was a nightmare match up for DJokovic on grass.
