RF97 vs RF97 (Federer setup) - @Peterfig vs @Geoff - The Showdown in Atlanta!

I had the absolute pleasure of meeting up with the one and only @Geoff in Atlanta this past weekend. Not only is he a wonderful guy but his tennis is equally wonderful. We hit a couple of times over the course of two days and I think in the entire time he missed maybe 2 shots :). I'm envious of his beautiful stroke production and consistent and solid ball striking. We tried to record a video of us hitting but it didn't turn out well due to some strong sun and shadows - but I'll try to at least find a few seconds of it to post on here.

I was visiting Atlanta so didn't have my racquet with me, however Geoff lent me one of his customized RF97's - customized to Roger's specs including lead tape under the bumper, string savers at the correct positions and power-pads. Solid playing stick. I've been playing with the stock RF97 and recently the Blade 98 so it was fairly easy for me to transition to the customized RF97, however the extra bit of weight at the top of the hoop did take a little time to get used to.

Geoff's textbook perfect strokes and timing make the RF97 a perfect frame for him .... plus I get the feeling he likes that Roger Federer guy :)

Just for the record we didn't play any points - just rallied. Had we played Geoff would have kicked my butt..... so the showdown in Atlanta would have been a beatdown in Atlanta.

If you guys want a photo of a couple of aging tennis nuts ... taken in Geoff's spectacular stringing room (he's got all the gadgets and more!) here you go:

Again Geoff - thank you for the hits and making my visit to Atlanta fun!

Just some additional details on the racquets we hit (we were both hitting the same frame / setup):
It was the all-black RF97. Strung with Roger's gut/alu power rough setup. 4 3/8" grip. Wilson Pro Overgrip.

Geoff is indeed a great guy. Have not met him in person, but have done business (purchased pallets) and exchanged phone numbers as well. He is a solid, stand up guy for sure and his reputation precedes him.

And same for you Peter. I remember when the RF97 A Black was being released you dealt with a lot of troll posts with humor and class. So much respect for you as well.

P.S: so great to see the TW comradarie gentlemen (y) - look fwd to the hitting video.

@PeterFig you have provided, patiently, a lot of information to us on the RF97, and I appreciate it tremendously. You were a significant factor in my choice of using that frame. I love the frame, cannot see myself changing anytime soon. Thank you.

@Geoff was the force behind in me getting into stringing, and I am just grateful. He spent numerous phone conversations, giving me advice on machines, methods and various tips that I still use today after more than 2 years. Thanks to him I have a very fulfilling stringing business right now, nothing comparable to his of course, but perfect within my circle of life. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Geoff

I can not express what a great time I had talking and playing tennis with @PeterFig. He is such a student of the game and fountain of information. We are very blessed to have "one of our own" here at Talk Tennis who has lived the dreams of many (I for one!). I always learn something from him every time we communicate which I wish especially after his visit was more in person. @PeterFig is being very modest about his tennis ability. He has a classical all court game with a beautiful one handed backhand with lots of topspin. His volleys are very crisp with a lot of bite. The forehand is well struck and definitely not pre ATP/WTA! We did not see each other serve but I assume that is equally as strong. @PeterFig is very consistent and moves very effortlessly around the court. I know I would enjoy practicing with him on a regular basis. We hit after @PeterFig watched a ladies clinic that myself and another one of our pros was teaching. Our club is very social (code for the members enjoy beer and wine) and the ladies in the clinic watched us hit. They were all asking about him! I guess they knew a celebrity was in their midst. If anyone gets the opportunity to spend time with @PeterFig do not let it pass you by!

@Ft.S we are very fortunate to have a good community here of people that help each other. I appreciate the kind words and hope that we get to meet sometime in the near future. I know that there has been talks/attempts of a Talk Tennis get together. in the past Would love to do it sometime if we can ever agree to a location and time!

I don't know this info. Geoff may have better insights into this but I'll leave that up to him to reply to.

Of course @RJYU will have this information - and he's been very kind with his time when I've sent him a few notes, however I have never asked him about Roger's specs and would not want to as I'm sure it's not something he wants to divulge in case it gets spread around ..... and he doesn't know me from whole in the wall so I would not expect him to tell me / place his trust in me.

That's very kind of you!

So you guys should know a few things:
  1. Geoff is a fantastic coach at a wonderful club. I had a blast visiting him there and as he said it's a very social club with great facilities. Everyone I met there was so incredibly friendly and kind. I got to watch about an hour of a coaching session with a lot of ladies in a clinic and Geoff had so much energy and expertise and knowhow. I was impressed!
  2. My forehand has some flaws in it. No sugar-coating that! Geoff is being kind. Geoff also very gently gave me a tip (without it sounding like he was giving a tip / saying my forehand had issues ) to improve my forehand and I already have put it into play today and it's made a huge difference! Thank you Geoff! My regular hitting partner noticed it too within the first few rallies.
  3. Geoff would kick my behind if we played a match. He's just way too solid. I didn't see him serve, but I'm sure it's solid like the rest of his game.

Thanks ! Glad you are enjoying the frame. I've been playing with the Blade 98 a lot lately but having hit the RF97 again last week with Geoff I am craving to go back to it!

Hilarious! :)
I've often wondered how guys on TT look like. Perhaps we could start a new thread with our pictures in the post? :)
There actually use to be a thread where you posted pics of yourself. Can’t remember the exact name or which sub forum though.

I also live in Atlanta and think it would be a great idea to get all the Atlanta and Metro Atlanta TT members together for a weekly or monthly round robin.

Assuming that PeterFig's post means one or more of you are located in Atlanta.

Geoff was texting me about the meeting. I thought it was dinner so I don't want to disturb your private dinner haha. I did not know you guys play tennis. if I knew it, I might just sneak in there hahaha.

Would be good to have a meet up. Maybe some tennis at one of the public facilities could work.

My observations are:
1) That is not Peter and that is not Geoff
2) Federer does not really use the RF97
3) Peter had nothing to do with the design of the RF97
4) Geoff does not know BHBH and has never been to Atlanta

#fakenews, #sad....Ahahaahaaha!

If someone admits to Photshopping their own picture, you know they're legit.

Oh no, thanks to you @Geoff now it's going to be even more difficult to handle @PeterFig 's much improve forehand now :)

I have never talked to Peter but @Geoff is an awesome guy. Helped me with many of my sticks and we chatted quite a bit about tennis. Hopefully one of those days I’ll be in Atalanta or he in Chicago and we can go for hit.

@chrisberchris and @Geoff, I live in Georgia as well but I live up North. Too bad Atlanta is 2 hours away from where I live.
I would love to hit with you guys one of these days!
Geoff lives in Roswell so much closer than Atlanta and I live 10min from his house so one stop service for rackets and shoes or apparel customizations from me. Also stop by TW warehouse in Milton hahaha.

Hey, my Grandma lives in Roswell! So maybe whenever I visit her, I could meet you guys?

I live in Smyrna, so not too far away from Roswell. I would like to find a way to organize a meet between the Atlanta players. Not sure how to do that thought as there isn't really a specific sub to post the info in.

I would post it here. Better chance for more people to see it. But you make a good point on what sub forum is appropriate.

Here it will be!

If readers of this thread know of any Atlanta players, feel free to tag them and perhaps we can make a meetup happen!

2 TT legends show up to hit with SexiRogis frames and no conspiracy trolls were able to attend and critique while poasting swingweight and basalt values to their social media channels?

Unreal. A huge missed opportunity.
