Safin- Much easier to win slams now than it was in his era

"Roger I think is the most talented player of all times,” he said. “He’s the most complete player, he has so many instruments and he could use so many instruments of tennis that not anyone can."

But, but but but...... I thought that was Novak. :p

Marin Safin tells the Tennis Podcast in an exclusive interview that today’s era of tennis lacks the depth that it had 15 years ago.

“Back then was a bit different,” the former World No. 1 and two-time major champion said. “Much more players, quality players. Top-20 guys that you need to really beat [to win a major]. Goran [Ivanisevic] – big names – Krajicek, Agassi, Sampras, Norman, Kafelnikov, Kuerten. Compared to now, the level of tennis, I see it, just a little bit too ridiculous compared to now. Back then was much more quality players, much more.”

Safin, who is on the ballot for the class of 2016 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, says that the gap between the Top-5 and the rest of the field is wider than it’s ever been. “I don’t want to take the credit from any of these guys at all, just now we have only four guys, five guys who are playing and deciding basically the world of tennis,” he said. “Back then, there was like 20, 30 players that you really need to beat, and there wasn’t an easy way of doing it.” He added: “[Back then there were] Too many players, too many good players, and now it’s half of them you don’t even know. Young ones, but I see only Top-5, the rest, I’m sorry but it’s a long way from being top-5.”

Safin may not be impressed with the lower ranks, but he’s still blown away by 17-time major champion Roger Federer. “Roger I think is the most talented player of all times,” he said. “He’s the most complete player, he has so many instruments and he could use so many instruments of tennis that not anyone can. He can do with the ball anything he wants. We, unfortunately, are not so talented compared to him.”

On the subject of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Safin admits that he’s surprised that the Serb has been able to amass so many Grand Slam trophies. “You could see that he is a talented player, and he will become a good player but I didn’t expect that he would win ten Grand Slams,” Safin said of the World’s most dominant player at the moment. “But like I said, right now, it’s a little bit easier to win a Grand Slam now, than back then. But you could see that he would become a good player, because he has all the shots, he is focused, he is serious and the way he was practicing, we knew that he will pass some years and he will become Top-10. But he surprised everybody. '

Safin can know. Djokovic dominates this era but was Safin's *****. If Safin had been playing now there would be no slams for poor Nole.

Yes, two matches with one of them while Djokovic was still in diapers means he was Safin's *****. I dread to imagine what describes Fed's relationship to Nadal.

I also wonder how Safin would stop Djokovic when he was routinely getting bounced in the first week most of the time. From 2003 to 2007 (20 Slams), he played Fed three times. Some rival

Well and truly spoken. Joke that Murray is No 2 and Berdych is No 5

Real joke is Ljubicic being No 3

By the way, here's the interesting part of Safin's quote:

Top-20 guys that you need to really beat [to win a major]. Goran [Ivanisevic] – big names – Krajicek, Agassi, Sampras, Norman, Kafelnikov, Kuerten.

All of these guys were from before Fed's peak years. What is he actually trying to say?

Didn't you read the article? That was because of the ridiculous tough opposition in his era. No byes into semis.

Read the names he actually mentioned and you'll see they were mostly from before Fed's peak, except a "geriatric" Agassi as you Fedphants would say

I didn't actually see anyone claim that Fed's best years was what he was talking about at all.

In fact, you're the one to bring that up out of the blue.

Let's get back on topic here guys: Safin's awesomeness and the (claimed) ridiculousness of the current era:D

I'll get my popcorn.

Well yes Ljubicic wasn't good enough to be number 3, agree with you on that.

However, at one point he reached 3 of the last 4 masters finals: Madrid 2005, Paris 2005 and Miami 2006. And he didn't reach the IW 2006 final because Fed took him out in the QF.

How many players from today like Tsonga,Berdych,Ferrer etc have ever had such a good streak in masters?

He was definetely not good enough to be number 3, but was good enough to do well at least outside of slams.

And I have heard of players just as bad who reached such a position before. Before the Big 4 era this wasn't so unusual.

Ljubicic could have been winning the occasional slam here 'n there in this era. Like a Cilic with a better serve.

Safin is very much like a child - better to be seen and not heard.

uh, WUT???

just because you don't plan to procreate...

oh and Safin's largely correct! the golden era was defined by a dominant top tier. when 3 of those 4 players are playing well below par, that = weak to **** poor timespan...

Sorry to break it to you but Safin is attacking the so-called golden era as well:

"I don’t want to take the credit from any of these guys at all, just now we have only four guys, five guys who are playing and deciding basically the world of tennis"

Arguably it was even worse back (as far as the domination by the Big Four goes) then because guys like Wawrinka and Cilic hadn't won Slams.

Of course Safin is going to say that. He decided to dedicate more time chasing women than focusing on tennis, and as a result he didn't win as much as he could have. So he throws this excuse that the field was deeper to explain his failures.

That is obviously BS. Remove Fed, Nadal, and Djokovic from tennis. All of a sudden we have a lot of "contenders." We see a bunch of one or two Slam wonders. Murray ascends to Agassi or maybe even Sampras tier. If Murray is not in tip-top shape then the #1 spot gets abused like a $5 hooker. There you have it: a "strong era" like the late 90s - early 2000s Safin is referring to.

Seriously, what's with all the homophobic comments I keep seeing on this forum tonight? I just don't understand it. This is 2015, right? I feel like I'm going insane.

Oh no. Lol Desperation reaching critical levels. Safin and the others would have added nicely to the top 10 today. Other than that that is about all. Interview might have been performed during a coke and ***** binge.

Not sure what you mean.

His comment went over your head. A.K.A you didn't understand it. I'm almost positive he didn't mean it the way you thought he did. I took it more like a response to "children are better to be seen and not heard," which is basically what you said. It wasn't a particularly nice comment actually, hence @DRII's response.

if the four or five are ATGs or at least will play at an ATG level for more than one or two tournaments at a time, then the rest of the field really doesn't matter too much.

right now, Federer Nadal and Murray are not playing close to peak or even prime levels - all for different reasons, which equals weak azz period right now...

Haven't a couple prominent commentators and former players (McEnroe, Courier, Gimelstob etc.) said exactly the opposite? IE: That unlike the old days where a high seed had easy matches for the first 3-4 rounds of majors, nowadays the field is so strong and the players are so athletic that it's much tougher to get through 7 matches, and every match is dangerous. Now maybe they are just hyping today's game to promote viewership but I'm pretty sure I've heard several veterans say something like that. Hell, they joke about how ATP players used to be able to go party and play the next day but you could never get away with that nowadays.

Take a look at yourself marat and factor in consistency on a day to day basis. If you were able to be consistent you would of dominated too like these guys, its funny how people use their weakensses as insults to others.

Some of the more idiotic types on here are just trying to get a rise out of you by aiming low blows at your sexuality. If you let it be known you were black or Chinese they would probably aim negative barbs at you along those lines as well. It basically means they haven't got a rational way of countering your argument.

(PS. I'm curious why some people on here think being gay necessarily means you don't plan to procreate!)

In 2004 Safin made the AO final and won Paris and Madrid. In 2005 he won the AO. That's fairly even with 2014/2015 Wawrinka.
