Sharapova was pulled out of Montreal ,after wining a match with Marta domachowska of Poland, with right shoulder injury. During match Sharapova asked trainer to look at her right shoulder. She decided to complete the match. Match lasts obout 3 hours. Sharapova made 17 double faults, and was strungeling witch her serve just like in most of season 2007. Sharapova said that she will be visiting a doctor in a few days, and then she will decide about playing in Olimpics and US Open. Sharapovas injury put a threat to her starts at Olimpics and US Open, as she said.

Well this sucks. I was pulling for Maria to make a comeback this summer after her terrible performance at Wimbledon...

Wow, 17 double faults? That's a terrible statistic!

As Tracy Austin said, her injury is now chronic (first occured in 07). The possibilty of a career threatening injury must hang over every pro tennis players head.

Her shoulder injury first occured in November 2005 when she pulled out of the semis of the Advanta Championships. I know because I was there for her early rounds and there when they made the announcement of her withdrawal on semi final day. Since then she has had shoulder trouble and pulled out of events over the years. Yet the media keeps insisting that her troubles started years later. God forbid they get the facts straight.

She should just have surgery already. Her shoulder won't ever be 100% but it will be better than it is now.
Look at Serena. She hasn't been the same player since her knee surgery in 03 but she still managed to win 2 slams after that and has won tier 1 titles since then.

Bad shoulder leading to double faulting....Now she and Guillermo Coria can commiserate....While I don't care for her, it's terrible how rapidly the fall can come.

"After yesterdays match I knew there was something seriously wrong with my shoulder. After taking a few different exams and MRI's this morning, the doctors found two small tears in the tendons of my shoulder. There are so many mixed feelings because last night they were almost positive there was something wrong with my nerve which could have ultimately been much more serious but after the tests this morning, for the first time in a while, they were able to give me a different answer and a different problem. But on the other hand this is something that needs a lot of time to heal, which really hurts me to say that I have to miss the Olympics.
I'm currently packing up really quick to hop on the plane and head to NY for a second opinion but I wanted to let all of you know first that there's no chance of me competing in Beijing. The timing is so unfortunate and this makes me more sad than anything.
I will keep everyone updated once I get a clear picture of what the next plan is..."

No Olympics for Maria!

I'm just wondering... Can You find other player which was 1# in the world and after that (after reaching first spot) always have problems to keep that position? Maria was 1# couple a times but never longer than month or month and a half. This years problems was caused of injury. After she played a really great AO, Fed and Doha, she starts to strungle with her serve. Remember match with Bondarenko? Her serve came back just for a while at Amelia Island and Charleston. Then? Rolland Garros, wimbledon and Toronto - one big double fault. I really think that Sharapova should try to 'cut' her swingback on serve, just like she did at San Diego '07 and US Open.
Best wishes for all tennis players with shoulder problems. I had shoulder injury in Nov and Dec '07. Shoulder problems came back in march this year and after a break in July. I'm wondering if I have the same shoulder injury type like Sharapova, because my service is really simular (almost the same ;P) to Sharapovas service motion in AO '07 when her shoulder problems really begins.

I had no idea that her problem was this serious and at the same time, I have made some comments about her condition that I truly regret now. As, much as I don't care for her, like Hewitt I don't think injury should be the deciding factor in ending or prevent them from playing their best.

too bad for Maria, unfortunately her shoulder problem may not be just from her serving motion, her followthrough on the forehand also puts major stress on the joint especially when she does the reverse whip......shoulder problems suck, going in for surgery on mine soon....

Let's not blow this out of proportion. It's not like her rotator cuff is shattered or something.
It will heal and she will play again. She may not ever be the player she was for the USO 2007 and hardcourt season right after, but that is life. She will still be able to play high level tennis and win slams.

Yeah! You're right! It's 100% truth! I'm using reverse whip at times. If it happen at the worm-up or when I'm swinging very fast with that tipe of followthrough I sometimes ended up with pain in my shoulder. But I gotta say real pain comes after serve which is, as I said, simular to Maria's at AO '07 and I have some toss problems and I thing that mine shoulder problems are source of my toss problems.

You should definitely find another pro's serve and forehand to emulate.

Well... Forehand comes naturally.
I emulated Sharapova's serve because (two reasons)

- I used to have problems with my service caused by
too low toss, hitpoint and too short swingback, so I
found a player with extremely high hitpoint, high toss
and really long swingback - that the first reason.

- Second reason - I do really found Maria's serve
beautiful.

I guess.
I personally find nothing beautiful about the overly high toss, and lack of kick on her second serve.
If you want to emulate a woman's serve, Alicia Molik is an good choice. Samantha Stosur is pretty good as well.
You also can't go wrong with Serena Williams.

From Maria:
Well my 24 hour medical tour came to an end yesterday after I met with Dr. David Altchek who is the premier shoulder doctor in the world. He looked at all my tests from April and today and informed me that I have been playing with a moderate tear in my rotator cuff tendon since April. He actually couldn't believe that I've been playing this long with this injury. You can imagine that I was not very thrilled to hear that my medical team did not see this tear in my shoulder back in April.
The good news is that it didn't get much worse since April but we could have started the healing time back then instead of now.
*
He does not believe that I need surgery and is sending me to work with a specialist in Arizona next week to do extensive rehab and strength work and he believes that I should be ready to play in 2-3 months. It hurts me so much to miss the Olympics and the US Open, you have no idea, just to type those words hurt!! I think this will be the first grand slam I have ever missed.
*
Now I need to move forward and stay positive. I am going to work hard to get healthy. I am going to do some extra work for my amazing sponsors who are always patient with me while I am playing tournaments and training. And I'm going to work on some business projects that I never have time to do, which will definitely keep me busy.
Once I'm healthy, I'm sure I'll look at this as a blessing in disguise. Right now it's a bit painful of course, but every athlete goes through these patches and I'm just grateful that this isn't as bad as it could have been.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate all of your support. Will give you another update in a week or so....

Where the blooooooooody heck is womens going.
MARIA KIRILENKO did horrible at the Rogers cup.
Maybe Dinara Safina will rise her ranking big time, because she is the only one making solid results, and she desserves to be higher ranked.
She has gotten over her anger issues on the court, and has started to play beautiful tennis, she just needs to get used to playing her best, and she really will be one of the best.
She's probably just trying to get used to how good she's playing, because she isn't getting angry anymore and she knows how to open the court up BIG TIME.
She desserves a good ranking.
Also, Jelena Jankovic and Ivanovic really need to quite choking because they are starting to do horrible, and they have no fight like serena williams, or Maria Sharapova.
Another thing is that I'm really upset that Maria Sharapova hit a hard note with her soldier because I was rooting for her to compete for the gold, and possibly when the us open series and us open.
She could do it if she was healthy.
But oh well, gotta savior the good times.

In two or three months ? ;O ?? omg... I hope her rank will be as high as needed to compete at Doha... (ladies season ending). As I remember she have no points to defend after US, and in USO she was only in 3r so, she should be nr 3,4 or 5 in the world in november...

I'm sorry, but I didn't think much of her dissing her "medical team" like that. She makes it sound like her doctors are a bunch of incompetent quacks who missed some obvious things. Perhaps the radiologist missed something, perhaps not. It is also possible that the new guy is "seeing" things in the April tests that weren't serious or weren't there. What better way to steal away a client thank suggest she was poorly served by her "medical team."

Anyway, it just felt kinda nasty to my ears.

If the WTA stats are right, and Maria is 6"3 and weighs 130 lbs. you could see these injuries coming. I never did understand why she threw her body out of whack on every point considering how slight she is. Maybe she needs to put a few pounds on to counteract the power, otherwise...
