Sharapova stopped screaming in Cinci

Sharapova stopped screaming right after having her foot taped toward the end of the Clisters match in Cinci. Nope; not one shriek for the rest of the match. Nothing to do with the foot, just verifies that the scream is contrived, probably to distract her opponent. I love my mute button.

Maybe because she didn´t/couldn´t play 100% per anymore?
And her shrieking isn´t killing me that bad that I have to press the mute button.

There was another long period before the foot where she stopped shrieking. Still made a noise, but not a shriek. Very strange, that.

Of course it's contrived. What's maddening is that she doesn't just scream louder as the match goes on, she screams longer as well.

Why is it that only women need to scream that loudly when playing tennis... maybe Fed needs to start shrieking a bit to get back on track and get his edge back

Everything before her serve is contrived, rehearsed and mechanical. She does a series of rituals, Nadal like, before she serves in order to take her back to a place of being in the zone.

Its quite deep. I think her grunts are a similar part of this whole mind controlling rituals she has, so to be fair to her you can't say its entirely on a behalf of putting her opponent off.

It had something to do with the lousy shots she began to make. And she didn;t seem to have here heart in the game after the medical time out.

Screaming has a lot to do with a signal to her opponent that she's going to win this match and no one can stop her.

And she rebuffed Clijster's usual gesture of a kiss on both cheeks at the end of the game, win or lose, that she gives European opponents. Maria...pfffft.

I loved the quiet of the no scream game.

I still don't get all the rants about the noises some of the players make when they play. Many of the men do it as well it's just a lower pitch grunt than a shriek. I really don't even notice it. If you watch high level tennis live you would notice that MANY players, men and women grunt and shriek when hitting the ball. It's about breathing.

As far as I am concerned.. it is not the screaming as much as the SLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW pace she sets. I was wanting to scream.. Get up TO the line and SERVE already!! Or get up to the line and get ready to return. The chair has to do something about Rafa.. Joker and Maria. You have to be a real hard core tennis fan to watch these three play. No wonder... tennis is dying a SLOWWWWWWWWWW death. The ave sport fan wants to see action.. and at a decent pace. If it was not for Kim.. I was not watching that one. Good God!

No way! I didn't think it was possible for her not to shriek!

Try screaming as loud as you can for about a minute...

When you get done with that, let me know if you are out of breath. Most likely you will be because it doesn't seem very possible to me that screaming=breathing.

When the "noises" break 100 decibels there is a problem. That is not normal and is a lot more then just breathing. Yes a lot of them make noises, but how often do those noises register that high? Its more than just breathing and normal exertion on the ball at that point. There is no real reason for a "grunt" to register at 101.2 decibels...which Sharapova hit at Wimbledon in 2005.

Atleast Sharapova is a warrior. She play one tourney after another even though she's not 100%. That's passion for the game and care about her fans. Unlike some players(you know who) doesn't give a crap except for herself. How do you feel if you are a Nadal fan and he skipped so many tourney? Suck isn't it?

Many men make a lot of noise, for the same reasons — to distract and/or intimidate.

I have heard some very loud men. Gonzales and Ferrer come to mind, but they're hardly the only ones. In fact, I was in Cincinnati to watch Sharapova play and saw male pros practicing and one of them was louder than she was when serving, I'd say. It was more of a bark than a shriek, but it was still obnoxious and distracting. As Navratilova said, the noise-making is often designed to hide the sound of the ball hitting the strings so opponents will have a harder time timing their shots.

Once again bringing up the Williams sisters in a thread that has nothing to do with them... Typical. :p

I rarely watch women's tennis b/c the noise is so annoying, but, on the rare occasions this year that some women's tennis was on TV and I didnt change it immediately, I noticed on a few occasions that some of the worst screamers, Azarenaka, Larcher de Brito, and Sharapova, seemed like they had modified their screams to more of a grunt that wasnt as high pitched, or loud, as their screams.

Or maybe the broadcasters are filtering the sound of these biatches as a humanitarian gesture.
