Sinner Mania Is Running Wild, Brother

Does anyone else think that the hype around Jannik Sinner is a little bit excessive?

I'll admit that his run to winning the Australian Open was impressive.

He beat some fairly good players along the way to picking up the title. Although it was obvious that Djokovic basically cost himself the match.

Still, I get the feeling like half of the forum believes he's going to be the next GOAT candidate.

The next incarnation of (fill in the blank.)

Which I find to be quite interesting, given that Sinner is probably competing in the weakest era since the early 1970s.

What are your thoughts?

Is the man going to be the next big thing in tennis or is he being over-hyped by the media?

Sinner mania is like 2022-23, Alcaraz mania, except Sinner doesn't have a credible Slam win.
You have to beat Nadal or Djokovic at a Slam, and it can't be when Djokovic played “one of the worst grand slam matches I’ve ever played, at least that I remember”.
Even Sinner's win over Medvedev was a joke, with Medvedev playing 6 more hours than Sinner, and Sinner still lost 2 sets...

We are lucky that all the fake Alcaraz fans got killed off late-last-year (they jumped ship when Alcaraz lost the US Open), so they'll be stuck with Sinner, while the legit Alcaraz fans will have all the glory.

I am happy that you finally started to give him credit, that's good for a start. Also, he's not competing in weakest era , weakest era is over with rise of Sinner and Carlos (2020-2023) was the weakest. Two ATG in their prime is not a wea era. As far as him becoming next big thing is concerned well with AO triumph he has answered it in style. I saw his i coming dominance last November. He's the real deal and you gotta embrace it, son! Teeth is also good but not as good as Italian Maestro.

Well...let me ask you this. Is it really fair to consider the 2024 ATP field as strong, when the best player in the world is 36 years old?

Yes 2024 get stronger since the 36 year old best player of last year got slayed by the emerging champ. it was weak af last year but now ?nope

An ATG entering his prime. Some ATG are late bloomer . Sinner will dominate the tour and a fellow ATG teeth in his prime. Fed didn't have prime ATG in his peak time , Novak didn't have prime ATG post 2014 but Sinner has it.
So Sinner's level in 2024 has improved over the previous year...

I agree with that statement.

What else is different about this year?

So Djokovic's level dropped 3 times after dominating last year ?lol
That's not the only difference.

Alcaraz has also turned into being somewhat of a non-factor at the slams.

Those two things combined, Djokovic's level significantly declining (as well as Alcaraz) allowed Jannik Sinner to pick up his first grand slam title.

In my estimation, Sinner is a 50/50 against Medvedev (maybe slightly better) and probably about the same against Alcaraz, if Alcaraz is playing like he did last year.

Sinner is still not a match Djokovic when Djokovic is playing at his normal level, and certainly not when Novak is playing well.

Too early to say but was mighty impressed he followed up by winning Rotterdam even if he didn’t have to play anyone greater than ADM

No one knows if Djokovic is able to play at a normal level anymore. He's been lately finding the way to win matches with poor (poor in Djokovic scale) tennis performances, but it appears that the end is near.

Are you talking about the 2024 AO where he was struggling with recovery from a cold? Or 2021/2022 where there was a sign of what you were saying? In 2023, it was not true as he blew through the season dominating mostly in straight sets as the business end of tournaments hitting his FH more aggressively than he has in a long while. I presume a healthy Djokovic will look like the 2023 player rather than the 2021-22 player.

You must be blind and deaf if you couldn’t see him struggling with sniffles, blowing his nose etc. in the early rounds of the AO when he was winning matches with difficulty. I was replying to a particular post about the matches he won and not referring to his loss.

Yeah I am blind but you're not for saying Djokovic played as good as his peak in last 5-6 years and his FH has been better than ever ( ignoring about pathetic field ) sure. Btw what happened to your Thread how one can beat Djokovic at Wimbledon? One decent opponent and your hero bite the dust? Lol

Anyone who wins a slam in this era is impressive. Except Djokovic, whose slam victories are expected, including Nadal at RG.

That's unfortunately the truth, and nothing but.

To be a winner, you have to be a real SINNER.

You said he will not win another slam this year ;)
I don't believe that he'll win another slam this year.

But that's entirely dependent upon Djokovic's form.

If Djokovic gets injured or if he continues to play like he did in Australia then, yes, the door is open for Sinner to win another grand slam title in 2024.

Meh!! You can't lose with this argument

If Sinner wins Djokovic will be grandpa

If Sinner loses Djokovic's level is great.

Btw you said he will not win second slam this year, stick to it lol

Sinner is currently the second or third best player in the world.

He's not as good as Djokovic.

But if Djokovic get injured then the door is open for Sinner to win another grand slam title.

I’m a huge Sinner fan but even I will admit that the hype is completely out of control at the moment.

We’ve gotta allow the guy headroom to keep developing and also processing the AO win. With that said as a fan it’s hard not to look ahead and see how long he can keep this run going.

The people I am most happy for are the people who predicted this for Sinner and knew he was going to come through. Guys like @dking68 @DSH @stringertom - I imagine it’s a very satisfying time for them.

Who are your Top 5 in men’s tennis right now?
I don't really follow the game, like I used to.

But if I had to pick 5, I would say:

1. Djokovic
2. Sinner
3. Alcaraz
4. Medvedev
5. Zverev

Djokovic is clearly the best of these five. At least when he's not injured.

He's sort of taken over the role of Roger Federer back in 2009. He's the best player at the important events. The problem for Novak is that he's no longer in his twenties.

For 5 Id put Humbert but to each his own

He won two titles this year, just like Sinner and seems to have an edge over Medvedev
Ok, so I looked up Humbert, and yes it's that same guy who routinely lost to Nick a few years ago.

I have to admit that I'm really not that impressed with him.

I don't think he would be in my top 10.

But I only follow the slams and the WTF.

The masters 1000s I don't bother with unless Rafa and / or Novak is playing.

He was injured and is recovering from his injury. He just entered the top 15, if he keeps playing like this he’ll be easily top 10 by French open. His game is well suited for Grass, I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes a Wimbledon Semi/Final at some point in his career - he won Halle 2021
