Tallest Group of Semifinalists Ever?

I haven't been watching much of the Rogers Cup, and just noticed a "final four" of Opelka, Isner, Medvedev and Tsitsipas. They average about 6'8", and I swear Tsit (the "shortie" of the bunch) looks taller than 6'4".

This must be the tallest group of semifinalists ever...no?

It's a shame to see tennis become a tall persons' sport. This is why soccer will always rule on the planet.

In the case of Isner and Opelka, I definitely agree, although Isner never got to the very top (other than his height) and we'll see about Opelka.

One thing about Med, Tsit and Zverev is that they can all really move and cover the court well.

Have only watched Opelka for a few games. He seems to move okay for his size.
But still not something anybody particularly wants to see.

I am starting to think maybe Nadal was right and that we will need some kind of a rule change to stop this development. But I don't think raising net height or whatever he was thinking years and years ago would work. The tour has been slowing down the surfaces for a couple of decades in pursuit of longer rallies and this has not had an effect on this average height increase development either. A higher net would possibly hurt the short guys more, if anything. The biggest thing seems to be simply that power is just easier to generate for the tall players (on all shots) and nowadays they move well enough that it's harder to negate that advantage in other areas.

The average height of a top 500 player was 185.5cm in 2019. For the top 10 the average height right now is 190.1cm. I think in 10 years the tour overall will get closer and closer to a 190cm average and maybe the top 10 will get even closer to the 2m mark. We'll see.

It reminds me of conversations years ago about raising the height of the basket (hoops) from 10 feet to ____(whatever). My immediate thought was that this would only help the taller players. The dynamics are different in tennis, though raising the net would probably just benefit the taller guys.

Comparatively speaking, this is like heavyweight boxing. Up until the 2000's, most fighters were rarely taller then 6' 3''. Now they are all giants! Must be the water everyone drinks! LOL

They have to reduce the power and spin the racquets can generate. Limit the head size (and thus the sweet spot) and ban poly. Bring back tennis as a game for all.

Oh, boring soccer..

You American ? I too never understood it's appeal but if everyone and their mothers watch it then their must be something good in there.

People are willing to kill and go to jail for soccer matches. Heck in India there's no big soccer team internationally or club wise but they are mad about clubs like Barca and Real Madrid.

None of those giants were/are ATG.
We'll see what future has in store, but from the next gen, only Thiem has won a GS yet...

Evolution. We are entering the Titans era.

I think this is what we’ll see. There might be the occasional 6’ player who’s a great ball-striker, but the advantages of being 6’3+are so great especially since they’re now all better movers that tennis is a giant’s game now.

Also, if one walks around any American or Northern/Western European suburban neighborhood, half the 15 year kids look to be 6’ tall or more. You just have many more 6’3 people in the overall population despite falling population numbers.

The way even declined big 3 can still dominate this tall generation of players while being under 6'3 indicates the height is not necessarily the issue. It probably has more to do with the way young players are being trained and taught.

I said last year that Thiem (at 6’0” flat) will likely be the shortest Slam winner for a long time.

Even Shapo and Alcaraz are 6’1” I believe and they are the shortest of NextGen.

The only sport where players are not getting taller? Basketball.

I guess for 2 reasons. First, the ideal average height is already reached, faster than other sports. Second, the outside game and shooting is more important than ever.

Maybe not the tallest but for an atp 1000 one of the weakest.

I saw Medvedev and Opelka in Miami a couple of years ago and multiple people in the audience were sleeping. This trend is not good for tennis

I'm a massive tennis fan, but I find Opelka almost unwatchable and boring. I feel the same way about Isner.

On the other hand, I like watching Medvedev for the inevitable train wreck.
