Taylor Made Fix For Men's Tennis On The Fritz!

Delray would give you a wildcard if you could bring in fans. But do these wildcards help players. Did it help young Young ? Or Harry ? To take just two notable examples of players receiving a plethora of WCs early in their careers. Yes, you get points and money immediately and I don't discount that but it may be better for developing your game if you earn your way in. And then there is the issue of general fairness on the tour which I do realize is a distant second or third or more to drawing fans which Fritz certainly will do in IW over whomever would otherwise scrap into the tournament.

I guess what my rambling post is saying is if I'm running the tourney he gets a WC but if I'm coaching him I might prefer he come through qualies. Actually, if I'm coaching him I'm wondering if it still isn't too late to fix that weird forehand.
Both Young and Harrison earned those WCs early on by being good prospects. We've been over this enough times already. Tennis is always looking for the next big thing.

WCs dont get you pts unless you win.

Fritz has earned his WCs, and he's only gotten 2-3 tour level WCs because he's only been playing tour level events since last June.

I dont think you can look at Young or Harrison at this pt and say that WCs have hurt them. Harrison used to be top 50, you only get that high by winning a lot of matches. I think his game has just been passed by. He's no longer considered to have a big serve or forehand, if he ever was. His backhand is below average and he doesnt volley that well.

I think a big reason Young and Harrison got so many WCs is because for the majority of the time there were no other better candidates.

Fritz looks mentally strong. He has a good feel for the game and a very good body type that suits to tennis.
His movement doesn't look that great though. Once he fixes his defensive dynamics, he can further climb in the rankings.
Yes, I read his mother had multiple QF in slams and they look like a very nice family. Wishing him all the best.

I disagree with the first part and the second part is why.
I only watched him once but since he is only 18, he doesn't look as thick as Raonic, especially in the legs. He is also shorter I believe. He can certainly move better. He is about the same height as Berdych.

No, he will be ranked 102.
He could pick up spots from players losing points from last year vs this week's results. For example, Janowicz just dropped 150 points from Montpelier'15 and now sits at #99. I think those are already out so he may not get passed. Likewise,Kokkinakis isn't playing and may lose points. Granollers lost early and was #98. Berankis, his opponent tomorrow, on the other hand, will move up into top 100. It's pretty fluid so I'll be happy to wait and see the chart after Sunday's results. It's all good, coming from the 800's much less than a year ago.

I'm not an authority on his game by any means. And the fact that I've seen him a bit more than you doesn't necessarily lead me to any greater insights than you.

I have watched him once on TV losing to Sock and several matches in person including the entire USO 2015 boys final which I thought was a very good match in very difficult conditions and I was impressed by his demeanor. But I thought him gangly and a subpar mover. Perhaps he will grow into his body once he fills out.

Berdych moves pretty darn well for a guy his size. Berdych I thought was decent mover even as a youngster (recall at around age 19 he beat The GOAT at The Olympics).

Speaking of Raonic, I posted this as I thought it might be interesting to look back at his game/movement a few years ago. I know he's put a lot of work into his movement.

Being very tall comes with a price. Balance improves very late on the taller guys as far as I know. For example in basketball, point and shooting guards can flourish very early in their careers whereas pivots (centers) will do later usually. So it is only natural for Raonic to play better as he matures in this regard and so will Fritz. Fritz being already this good at 18 is a great sign. Not sure where Raonic was when he was 18. Berdych has very strong legs, I guess that helps with balance and movement.

I think the price is more than when you develop balance. I think the price is never reaching elite status as in a player that can win multiple Majors or maintains #1 for more than a Rios-nanosecond if at all.

Maybe he will prove me wrong.

This week in 2009, Raonic was ranked in the 800's and bowing out in the SFs of a Futures tournament in Zagreb, Croatia. His breakout year was two years later, unexpectedly making 4R at AO'11 and following it up with his first ATP title less than a month later in Ssn Jose. It took the GOAT match point from Roddick to deprive him of a second consecutive title a week later in Memphis.

Damn, Fritz really has a good chance to make the final. What a tournament the guy is having. Will have to watch his match tomorrow.

Fritz apparently the youngest American to make an ATP semi since Chang in 1989 (Wembley) :)

additionally, he had hotel security called on him after his previous match against Johnson as he was making too much noise getting ice from the ice machine at 1.30am! I have visions of him keep going back and forth to the machine with a small bucket. 'I bet Novak doesn't have to put up with this ****...' :D

Stringertom, there is a live ranking site, which includes the points earned this week by each player and takes in consideration also the points coming off of the players. It also projects the total points of each player if he wins his next mach. Based on that Taylor is now ranked right now 113 and if he wins today will be 102. So that is as accurate as can be. Of course is all good, I was going to be happy is he makes the top 100 by April!

Thanks! I've been tracking the race on live-tennis.eu but the page I have doesn't show all the projected rankings, just where everyone stands or can move up to if they're still in a draw. THF is now #24 and can easily move much higher with two more wins this weekend. That makes me excite!

Simply quite awesome sauce from young Harry. I love it. Finally a young player with some serious bawls seemingly ready to challenge the status quo.

Let's go, Taylor Harry!

Chances are he'll be destroyed by Nishikori

Good run though

If Nishikori does make it through, it will be a great test for Fritz despite the mileage Fritz has accumulated this week. Nishikori's backhand will not fold easily and he is very good at constantly applying pressure, especially with angles and moving the opponent around. I certainly hope Nishikori makes it so we have a good test.

Not just "one top 100 player", but also one top 30 player. Fritz will in all likelihood lose to Nishikori, but he's already proved his worth several times over for anyone with functioning eyes. For those who have followed the youngster scene, this isn't all too surprising at all.

I think some caution is needed. Monfils, Gasquet, Nishikori, Robredo all made ATP finals at around the same age.

This is obviously an encouraging sign but let's see a little more of him before we crown him the next Slam winner, next #1, or next GOAT

He has the tools and not many readily apparent weaknesses (other than his movement which is still good for size) and his head screwed on right. But I'd say he's the most promising American player since Roddick

Well, this is so obvious that it shouldn't need spelling out. You're right in the sense that some will inevitably get caught up in the hype machine, but most everyone who seriously follows the game realizes that no prospect is a guaranteed champ and that things can always happen.

What I mean isn't that he has proved that he's a lock to win slams, but that the level and potential that he currently possesses is pretty obvious by now, and has been for a while for those who have followed these guys actively. The extent to which he'll fulfill and build further on that potential remains to be seen obviously.

But yeah, caution is good, and hopefully his team etc remember that also.

What did you expect of a 18 year old? Win the W like Chang?

Steve Johnson No. 29 (career high)
Benjamin Becker No.107 (career high 35 in 2014)
Ricardas Berankis No. 102 (career high 67 in 2013)

Enough said.

Y'all should look up old threads about Harrison when he won a match at 15. Or beat ljubicic at the USO when he was 18. It was pretty over the top. It's like Groundhog Day here, one good tournament from an youngish player makes them a future top tenner, one bad tournament for current top tenners and they should retire.

can't be arsed going back pages but I've scanned up this page and no one has referred to him as next GOAT, multi slam winner etc. Just people happy and excited for a very good young player who's shown good mental strength and always improving tennis skills and IQ. It's always fun to watch a youngster doing well. I think people here realise the futility of propping people up as future GOATS.

Also this isn't some flash in the pan..... people have been recognising his potential and following him since he was ranked in the 800s, so it's great to see how he's progressing.

Summary: stop being wet blankets :p

Yeah, I think it's fine to be excite about a young man who has gained 770 ranking spots in 8 months from going 23-5 with three titles at Challenger level and, now in just his third try at ATP/slam level, worked his way in some fairly dramatic fashion into a final. The guy has game and, more importantly, some intensity lacking in most of the young guys on the rise.

Well said. I became a big fan in a short time frame of Taylor's, but I would never say he will be #1, win slams, etc, because he still needs to develop in certain areas.

I agree that Harrison got a lot of hype, with no reason. Now he is admiring Taylor's BH LOL
