It would be nice to see some documentation from them about which landfills, can I throw this in the yard?, etc. I dont see any documentation. I am also hoping Luxilon releases that info when Eco Spin comes out in a few weeks.

Good work Gamma on figuring out the science of 100% Biodegradable material (strings) . This is really a positive step forward so hats off to Gamma for this entry ! Tennis materials plastics, resins rubber from racquets, balls, cans, strings packaging etc. are quite nasty for the environment so this is just another tool / technology that helps mitigate some of the bad stuff. The BIG question is how do they perform ??

Last note, if Gamma ever decides to release a shaped version of these Sapphire strings wouldn't they need to be called Star Sapphire .

Dang, I really wish I could join this playtest, but I'm still working on the Kirschbaum one and I don't want to take time away from that for this one.

If anybody else can compare this to Velociti Catalyst, the only other biodegradable string I'm aware of, please do! Can't wait to hear how y'all like it.

Pretty sure the Gosen Biogut series was also biodegradable in some way, maybe ahead of its time?
Someone can fact check me on that if they know better.

That could be, I'm unfamiliar with it. A quick search did find this:

"It is a nylon based string with bio-degradable material added..."

which makes me think not (not fully at least the way Catalyst and Sapphire appear to be), but like I said, I'm unfamiliar so it very well may be.

I know Luxilon has their eco power but I believe those are just made out of recycled materials, not biodegradable.

Gosen Biogut was probably 10 or more years ago, that's why I said maybe they were ahead of the game.
I just happened to have some as I found it in a shop in a box full of strings.

Excited to part of this play test - Gamma TNT was my go-to string for many years back in the day, and more recently I loved their Gamma AMP Moto Poly. This string looks very intriguing.

Eco power & rough are recycled materials. Eco Spin, which is not on the market just yet is biodegradable. It is black and five sided.

I used Catalyst quite a bit. It was pretty lively and didnt have much pocketing, but felt it played better than the luxilon options. Thought it played on the soft side of the spectrum and lasted 8-12 hours (12, I pushed it a bit to see what would happen), but YMMV. I don't think I will try out this gamma string, I am also in the middle of other playtests and hoping to try out the luxilon eco spin in a few weeks.

Interesting, hadn't heard of Eco Spin yet. Great that a more mainstream company is able to put out a biodegradable string, I'll definitely have to test it out too. Might have to just purchase a set of the Sapphire and test them out together.

Looking forward to trying this string. Over the past couple of years, I’ve moved to less sharply shaped strings because I felt the increased spin I got was not enough to make up for the increased sensitivity to incoming spin. I’m currently using 1.20 Confidential and I was part of the first Flash string test. At that time, I thought Evolution was the best round string I had tried so I’ll be doing a three way comparison with Sapphire, Confidential, and Evolution.

Definitely a beautiful string... powder / turquoise blue. Nice and smooth and a bit firm to the touch.
Can't wait to string this one up.

Happy to be a part of the playtest! I definitely don't feel great about throwing a bunch of plastic string in the garbage every few weeks. Will be interesting to see how it plays, I have also been playing mostly shaped polys and wondering if switching back to round will give me some more consistent performance.

The main reason for me staying with a shaped poly is because those strings give me the higher launch angle that I prefer.

My problems with spin sensitivity from highly shaped strings was primarily only when I was not in good shape to make the shot. If someone hit a heavy underspin shot that I had to volley and I was on balance, in rhythm, and wasn’t rushed, I could correctly compensate for the spin. But if I got turned around because I anticipated the direction wrong, or I had to really stretch to get the racquet on the ball, a sharply shaped string increased my error rate on that shot. And as I played higher level players my age, or I played with younger and hard hitting players, being totally set to make a shot became less and less common.

The other kind of side benefit of using a less shaped string is I tend not to try to heavily spin up a ball as much, and so I miss less. The times it really hurt me were when I’d force a weaker ball but I couldn’t quite get there in time to be comfortable hitting an aggressive ball, but would try to hit heavy spin anyway and then miss. Disheartening to finally work the point to my advantage only to make an unforced error.

I’ve got three racquets needing strings so with the Sapphire arriving tomorrow, it’s great timing.

I got the Sapphire and it is also the 16 gauge/1.28 mm. Won’t make it quite as relevant comparing to my current 1.20 Confidential since I prefer thinner gauges but it will still be close to the 1.25 Evolution so that will be a good comparison.

As an aside, I used to post photos from Google drive but now that doesn’t seem to work. Does anyone know how I can continue to use Google drive ordo I need another hosting platform?

I strung up my sample of 1.28/16 gauge Sapphire, along with an older pack of 1.25/17 gauge Proline Evolution. One of the racquets needed new grommets so I decided to change the grommets in both racquets so the measured tension loss would be consistent between the two. My racquets are the Babolat Aero 112 with a 16x19 pattern, handle weighted to make 350 grams and 345 swing weight. I strung one piece using an ATW pattern with 49 pounds on the mains and 45 pounds on the crosses, which is my usual tension.

The set of Sapphire weighed 22.1 grams and was 39’6” long. I cut a one foot section and pulled 50 pounds, let it sit for one minute, and it required a 6 mm pull to regain the 50 pounds. I used a light prestretch to remove some of the coil memory, but coil memory was still moderate when stringing. It was noticeably more elastic than my usual 1.20 Confidential when pulling tension. Friction when pulling crosses was average among poly strings. RacquetTune using the default string factor said 42.7 pounds right off the stringer. I’m only using RacquetTune to measure changes in tension and not to measure absolute tension.

The set of Evolution weighed 22.7 grams and was 39’7” long. By feel, it is a thinner gauge and is basically identical in length so the material is more dense. I cut a one foot section and pulled 50 pounds tension and let it sit for one minute. It required 4 mm additional pull to regain 50 pounds of tension, 2 mm less than Sapphire. I used a light prestretch to remove coil memory and coil memory was low to moderate during stringing. It is noticeably less elastic than Sapphire when pulling tension, and friction when pulling crosses is less than with Sapphire, indicating a more slick surface. RacquetTune using the default string factor said it was 41.9 pounds right off the stringer.

Evolution is a darker blue than Sapphire, which seems to have a hint of green in it.
If I have the time tomorrow morning, I’ll restring the Confidential also using a new grommet set. I’ll be hitting several times over the next few days.

I received the 1.28 gauge in the mail and had the time to string it up tonight. So, I strung my Babola’ Pure Aero Plus at 49 mains and 47 crosses. I skipped the top cross string, as usual, to make the string pattern 16x18, which provides me with an extra boost on my serves. After stringing, I used my Tourna tension meter to measure the tension, which was 55 pounds! 52#s is my reference tension for polyester strings. Hopefully, this configuration provides adequate power! We shall see.

My 1.23 arrived yesterday, and have to say the packaging and the color of the string look amazing. Excited to string this up and try it out in the next week or two, after some USTA matches this weekend and spring break travel next week.

Changed the grommet and strung up my third racquet with my preferred Confidential 1.20. That registered 45.7 pounds on RacquetTune using the default string factor.

Sitting overnight, Sapphire went from 42.7 to 40.3 pounds, a loss of 2.4 pounds or 5.4%. Evolution went from 41.9 to 39.7 pounds, a loss of 2.2 pounds or 5.3%.

Am off to hit in a couple of hours.

Played some social mixed doubles this morning. My first impression are:

1. Love the color.
2. Very soft and plush. Seems to have good dwell time, although this may be due to the strung tension. I normally do one tension for full bed polys but have read that having looser crossed improves dwell time so I thought I'd give it a try. Seems to be true at 44#/42#.
3. Power and spin seems to be what you put into it.

So far, I'm liking it more than the Flash playtest.

Wow! First hit tonight and I really like this string!

One of my preferred characteristics in a string is the ability to generate a relatively high launch angle. Almost always, the launch angle I like requires a thin and shaped string. Sapphire gave me a high enough launch angle, even in the 1.28/16 gauge that it was an easy adjustment from my usual 1.20 Confidential.

On top of that, Sapphire feels lively, with good power that is still controllable. It’s plush and has good comfort when missing the sweet spot. It also has good pocketing sensation, and the stringbed feels consistent and repeatable. The ball went exactly where I thought it was going to go based on my swing and the contact.

I had a 90 minute session and hit with the Sapphire for about 85 of those minutes. It was just an easy rally day so I never hit more than about 60% effort. At that level, I never tried to hit with much spin, either topspin or underspin, but it does seem like there was a bit less spin that I would expect.

I did switch to Evolution for about five minutes. With the same swing, my groundstrokes lost about a foot of net clearance and the stringbed felt stiffer and harsher. I enjoyed the Sapphire so much I put the Evolution away quickly.

After this light hit, Sapphire lost 1.4 pounds or another 3.3%. Total loss is 3.8 pounds or 8.9%, which is better than average in my experience with poly strings. There’s denting at the notches but not yet notching that makes the string click when moved out of position.

Hitting against a ball machine tomorrow night and will get some video then. But a very promising start to this test.

Initially, I thought I cranked the tension on my racket so tight, I thought it'd turned my racket into a frying pan. But lo and behold, after a tentative test swing, forget launching wimpy balls, this thing was a rocket launcher ready to blast that fuzzball into the sun! It was a NASA-approved spud gun primed to launch that neon sphere into the next zip code!

My Pure Aero Plus is one of the few rackets I don’t modify from the factory because the swing weight can get out of control really fast. This racket swings like a runaway train... unless I leave it stock. Then it's just a train... at the station.

It's been ages since I strung my racket with Gamma strings. This feels like a tropical vacation for my poor, neglected arm. It’s like a crispy hotdog, crispy on the outside, nice and meaty on the inside. The sound it makes at contact is also addictive.

Very disjointed kind of night - seemed like I was just out of sync and most everything didn't go smoothly, but I recorded a few videos anyway of a ball machine session testing Sapphire.

First, some forehands. I cut this video as someone fell on the next court with a yelp. Same as the previous hit in that the string has liveliness and is plush, with good pocketing sensation. But there were some changes that became more obvious when I finished with about 20 minutes of live hitting which I didn't record, and that is that the launch angle is starting to decrease. You can see that many of those shots have good shape and net clearance, but there were also a few that just barely cleared the net. It seems that unless I caught the ball just perfectly, it was starting to lose that bite that gave me the higher launch angle. Apologies for not realizing that my phone was aimed way off to the side. Like I said, I just felt a bit out of sync today.

Volleys were point and shoot. The plushness doesn't create a control issue and the stringbed is firm enough and insensitive enough to incoming spin to make me feel very confident I can hit smaller targets. I tend to volley pretty flat, especially on the forehand, and here the round string gives exactly what is put into it. Control is very good to excellent, and I hit some drop volleys at the end that despite the relatively high power level of this string, was able to absorb the ball speed with excellent directional control. And the out of sync thing continues as I hit the tripod with one of my volleys, which knocked the phone over to an angle that I didn't notice.

Last, some backhands. I recorded this near the end of my ball machine session and right before some live hitting, and at least I didn't hit the tripod and break my phone. I was starting to notice the ball coming off the stringbed a little low but thought it was just due to the really inconsistent, worn, and dead ball machine balls. What I notice on my backhand is that underspin shots are floatier and have less ball speed. They don't have the same spin rate even though I'm trying to put quite a bit of spin with the shots that I hit, and I felt like I needed to try to heavily spin the ball in order to not have the ball float high and slow. I don't know that I'd be able to consistently try to spin the ball this heavily and not make a lot of unforced errors, but my regular backhand slice probably clears the net by an extra foot and then sits up after the bounce.

In the live hitting afterwards, it is pretty clear that the launch angle had come down from what I experienced yesterday. It wasn't due to tension loss. After I got home, I measured only another 0.4 pound loss according to RacquetTune. The strings are now notched - there is a sharp click moving the crosses and the mains take more force to slide. Power levels, the pocketing feel, and comfort levels are unchanged.

I hit with the Evolution and Confidential racquets today also. Despite the loss of that bit of launch angle with the Sapphire, it is still higher than with Evolution. On similar shots, I have about a foot more net clearance with Sapphire, and what seems like maybe a couple of MPH less ball speed with Evolution. Underspin backhands have a more biting trajectory with Evolution than Sapphire, even though spin production feels roughly similar between the two.

Pulling out the Confidential showed how much difference there now is. The fresh Confidential gave me between 1-2 feet of higher net clearance on the same swing than with Sapphire, and the ball visibly has more spin as it dives towards the court more strongly and bounces higher. Slices really hug the net and shoot through the court with a very low bounce. When I try to increase the amount of topspin, I get a strong sensation of the strings biting into the felt on the ball, and that gives me a lot of confidence that Confidential will do what I am asking of it. I don't get that same feeling from either Evolution or Sapphire.

Both Evolution and Confidential are more harsh than Sapphire. Evolution feels a bit tinny, with a high frequency, post-impact vibration that Confidential doesn't have. Confidential feels slightly more jarring than Evolution when missing high on the stringbed and has a stronger pocketing feel. Power levels are lowest with Evolution, slightly higher with Confidential, and then a big jump in the liveliness feel to Sapphire.

I think because I'm using a 73 RA racket, that it puts greater stress on the strings because the frame is relatively unyielding. This magnifies changes in the stringbed response as the string intersections notch and as the material loses elasticity and tension. I'm curious if others also notice the same changes I've seen.

I received a Gamma Sapphire playtest notice last week, and a playtest package is scheduled to arrive tomorrow (3/12/2024). I am planning to string it on Head PT280 MP (18 x 20) and compare with my regular string setup. Thank you to Gamma and @TW Staff for this playtest opportunity, and I am super excited to playtest this new biodegradable product!

Strung up Gamma Sapphire 16 / 1.28mm in one of my new (3rd gen. ) Pure Strikes 98 16x19 @ 44 mains / 45 crosses (very similar to the K Flash playtest which was 43 / 45 in P1 Pure Strike 98 16 x19 ) in hopes to get a similar comparison.
Have to agree with @tennisjunkie that this string does deliver some explosiveness. My initial thoughts are that Sapphire definitely delivers easy power and slightly higher launch than many round polys. I don't think its overpowered, but on the higher end of the spectrum for power. I didn't have a chance to play it in a match yet as I took out the pair of racquets I'm more accustomed to.

Gamma needs to warn people about these strings. They're so good, they're not even from this planet anymore. Gamma should rename these strings to alien strings. The spin and control from these strings make me wanna

In all seriousness, I can't find a single critique.

Same. I really wanted to participate in this one, but exercised self control. I like that these are biodegradeable, which seems even better for the environment. However, I wonder how they would hold up if strung and not used for a while (i.e. someone who puts them in their bag and doesn't play for a year). Would they still be useable? How do they hold up to changing temperatures? If left in the sun for several hours during summer, would they become unusable?

I generally string my rackets at 52 pounds in the mains and 50 on the crosses using 1.25-gauge polyester strings. Going up to a bigger gauge string, I lowered 3 pounds on both mains and crosses, and the tension settled in at 52 pounds, as if I were measuring 1.25-gauge strings with my string meter, before I hit a single ball. So that worked out well for me because it is the tension I am used to.

Maybe I would drop another pound or two, so 4 to 5 pounds less than my usual tension. So far, I'm McLovin these strings and wondering if I should switch to this setup permanently.

I've logged three hours so far. Hopefully, these don't completely bag out after a few more hours.

I hit with Sapphire for about another 75 minutes today, against a high level and hard hitting opponent. The launch angle loss is definitely there, but the amount of launch angle loss varies by how well I make contact. If I catch the ball cleanly, launch angle changes from when Sapphire was fresh are pretty minimal. However, if I’m slightly late in accelerating the racquet up to speed, or if the ball bounces slightly higher than I anticipate and I have to take a steeper swing angle to the contact point, there Is a feeling of the string not fully biting into the ball and so the ball comes off with a low angle.

The same happens in reverse for underspin backhands. If I don’t hit the ball with a fully committed swing, the shot goes high and becomes floaty, and then after the bounce sits up asking to be hit.

I went to a flatter swing trajectory and the launch angle differences were less noticeable. Spin capability has definitely decreased, but relatively not as much as launch angle has gone down when trying to hit that heavy spin. The power level and comfort seem unchanged, and the plushness and liveliness seems to make the sweet spot bigger.

Sapphire has now lost another 1.1 pounds according to RacquetTune. Total loss is now 5.3 pounds or 12.4%.Nothing seems to be a bit less than 1/4 way through. The mains now get stuck slightly out of position, and both mains and crosses click in and out of notches when moved.

The last 15 minutes I hit with my usual Confidential 1.20. The higher and familiar launch angle was there and spin is increased over Sapphire on all shots, even those with a flatter swing trajectory.

More hitting tomorrow before transitioning to outdoors due to a nice run of weather we have coming.

Also wanted to say that if I had it to do again, I would string it up a couple of pounds tighter. I strung it up at my usual tensions for Confidential 1.20 thinking that the thicker Sapphire would be firm enough. But now that tension has dropped, I would prefer a firmer string bed even though it is still very playable as it is.

I'm thinking the same. I'm 3 hitting sessions into the playtest and feel that the honeymoon period is over. I'm experiencing a little bit too much power and am wishing that I strung mine a couple of pounds tighter as well. Given how soft and plush the strings feel, even 5 pounds tighter would still be comfortable.

I only string my rackets using one piece of string. I feel that it helps maintain the tension longer. I also pull the tension through the last grommet, using a Sharpie as an intermediary, to eliminate any slack when I'm tying. I also use the lockout mode rather than the constant pull function on my Wise 2086 tension head to keep the racket from feeling dead. In the end, I usually only lose a pound or two of tension, and it helps me keep the strings fresher for longer, kind of like Fabreeze for your racket.

I got my Gamma Sapphire playtest string (16 gauge, 1.28 mm) yesterday (3/12/2024), and no issue to note using a drop-weight string machine last night. Sapphire strung at 50 lbs, Mains / 50 lbs, Crosses using two-piece stringing on Head PT280 MP (18 x 20). I will let the string bed settle and start playtest on Thursday (3/14).

Interesting first time out with the Sapphire 1.28. I find that most poly strings have an unpleasant break-in period for the first hour or two. This was the most extreme example I've encountered; it was one of the harshest strings I've played with for the first 30 minutes, especially if I missed the sweet spot high. Just crazy stiff and low powered.

After 30 minutes I switched racquets because my arm was getting sore already. 15-20 minutes later I picked it up again, and it was like a whole new string job. Way softer and more consistent across the string bed. By the end of the session I was feeling pretty good about it. Will be really interesting to see how it ages over the next few sessions.

Gamma Sapphire 1.28
Played a couple more hours with Sapphire (1.28) today and over the weekend and I have to agree it is on the livelier side and I would string it a 2-3lbs or more higher if I were doing this again.
I strung it at 44 / 46 and I like it where it is too, but my feeling is that it is so comfortable that I could easily string higher and it would still be comfortable and and more direct / crisp in its feel.

Having said that, this is a nice string. For a round poly it has a medium plus launch angle in my Pure Strike 98 and that is my sweet spot. I like a little lift, but not too much. I could tell as I switch racquets, other set ups had lower launches, and that was not as enjoyable for me today. Spin was very good especially given that it is a round poly. Its ability to impart spin ( not a spin monster, but respectable) positively impacted groundstrokes off both wings, and I like the subtle dip I was consistently getting. Slices sliced on groundstrokes and serves and I have to say it produces a nice kick serve too. Power is always present and you don't need to do much to access it, rather more be careful in how you use it. It is not a dead control string, but the control is there too. I would say this is a softer and comfortable poly that would suit people who are not big fans of the stiffer deader polys like RPM Blast or Big Banger etc. In a control oriented frame lower tensions will still work, but if you put it in larger head sizes I think you will definitely need to bump up the tension 5-7 lbs from where I tested this in my PS98.

So far after around 3 hours I am liking this string, especially on serves and around the net where the liveliness really helps it to shine.

Another 75 minutes today and the ability to grip the ball is decreasing. It’s continuing to lose launch angle though the launch angle is still pretty high for a round string. But spin feels harder to generate and getting the response I expect seems to require more precise contact. When I switch to my freshly strung racquet with Confidential, the change seems greater with every outing. This makes me think that Sapphire gradually changes playability characteristics rather than having a cliff falloff like Alu Power, so I can adjust from session to session. It it also makes me feel like restringing it and going to a fresh bed will require an adjustment.

Tension has gone down by another 0.9 pounds and is now 6.2 pounds total loss or 14.5%. Usually by the fourth or fifth hour, tension loss has leveled off but Sapphire’s tension loss seems to be still occurring with every outing. It definitely could have used more tension to start, and I wonder if the thinner gauge would experience even greater tension loss.
