The race to #1

Give your head a shake the top six couldn't care less about stats or number one. No care at all. That is like trophy hunting in U10, its about glory, slams, CASH, bonuses.

fact or spec

I'll be down in Miami this year and have several friends who have long relationships with the tournament. It's more wishful thinking this year. He skipped it in 2013 & 2015 when healthy after playing IW which he's never skipped healthy. When asked by reserve ticket holders they're getting less than 50% and mostly "we hope". Then there's booking information this year down from last year when they knew he was coming.

Of course he could play but smart money says unlikely.

Rafa will be a heavy favourite for Acapulco and Fed may or may not play Dubai. From there Fed has the big task of defending the Sunshine Double points to stay in the conversation (in the short term) and then after that Rafa has his own big task of defending his clay points to stay in front. After the clay season Nadal doesn't have any significante points to defend until the US Open.
Cilic, Delpo, Querrey etc. are all there. Wouldn't call Rafa a heavy favorite in that field in best of 3, especially not coming off an injury

He should just call the guys in Rotterdam, make them believe, reach semis, withdraw and here his #1. Or win it and be #1 in IW for real.

Oh, I can keep dreaming.

But Fed being fans of records and stuff like that, I am sure the idea is in his mind too !

Hypothetical but if Roger played Dubai, won, then Nadal pulled out of acapulco due to the injury he sustained in AO, that could be an 750-800 point swing in Rogers favour. If Roger did decide to play Dubai and won, he would regain no1 even if it was just for a couple of weeks. Would be sweet but trust him to make the right decision long term.

Cilic hahaha
Delpo hahaha
Querry LMFAO

this is clay and Rafa will be the heavy favourite. Whether he wins or not is another matter but going into the tournament, none of those guys will come close to being favourites to win.

Yep, as funny as it would be to entertain the notion that Nadal lost to Sam Clayrrey last year, I'm afraid that Acapulco is definitely HC... ;)

The stage is set for the GOAT, Roger Federer, to return to his rightful position as world #1.

The man is, in reality, the best player on Earth at present - it's up to him whether he bothers to play enough tournaments for the rankings to actually reflect that.

What an achievement it would be at age 36 though.

Federer doesn't care about number one anymore. That record has already been broken. He wants to win as many slams as possible during this last 1 or 2 years he plays. He could get to 22-23 slams if he schedules himself right.
