Thiem has ATG potential

Finally getting the big shots in the court consistently throughout a tournament. If he was a little younger, I’d say he would become one of the greatest clay court players of all time along with potentially becoming hardcourt GOAT. Still yet to prove himself on grass. And still needs to brush up mentally so he isn’t going 5 sets against guys like Bolt.

I may have spoke too soon. His shots started failing him. On the bright side, he can win at least a couple slams once he can hit big with consistency throughout a slam.

Everyone missing the part where I wanted Djokovic to win? I was not saying Thiem would win the match. Just saying his playing style will make him nearly unstoppable on hard courts if his big shots go in with consistency.

Naah won't happen. This will get to him. He might lose another final at RG very soon.

Rule 22. No all-timer failed to make a Slam Semi by age 22. Thiem was 23.

Rule 24 provides on top of that SF player needs to win a Slam by 24. So again no.

Ill judge him better at IW. Be interesting to see how he copes defending his title at the 5th Major.

He’s likeable. However, a bit too nice. All the big 3 are legends but they have that dark side to them, which you need. They not afraid to go off court, take a medical time out, argue with umpire. Nadal, Djokovic and Federer are legends and great characters. They are role models but also at times they have gamesmanship tactics as they will do anything to win.

Thiem needs to develop that ruthless streak too. As he’s got the game to win slams but needs that ruthless mentality.

Yes totally agree with all that. Thiems problem also will be Tsitsipas. I think he has a poor record v Tsitispas and has lost even on clay to him.

Too many players out there who can trouble him before a final.

I assume this was a troll thread.
As a Thiem fan I believe he will be lifting increasingly heavy trophies and I am especially pleased with his transformation into a threat on HC. However, the idea of being an ATG is a joke unless you have 5 slams. Thiem would do well to match career achievements of Stan.

What saddens me somewhat is the thought that some player who is currently playing and young is going to be become a 10+ slam winner and we're being shown now that even in mid to late 30's, they are still getting beaten by the last gen. Thiem is a good EG of this but it's also Zverev and Medvedev and maybe some others. This will be the first time i've truely felt like "new" players are not as good as the older players and the sport isn't getting better or changing, it's regressing.

I grew up in the 90s with tennis when the game was changing and improving, watching players like Sampras and Agassi and then the transition to Federer and Nadal and then Djokovic and Murray. It just seemed like tennis was improving and the game and racquet technology was just moving forward and now it's just stopped. There is no new style, it's the same except the new players are simply not as good and it's somewhat depressing.

ATG's in their prime beat ATGs past their prime that are 6 years older. If he was going to be an ATG, he would have won Sunday.

Thiem looks erratic when he plays. I’ve been amazed by his ability to keep balls in play bc he is chasing after so many balls and is hitting with a full swing every time. Unlike Djokovic who has a very controlled swing that always looks exactly the same. The player amongst the NexGen who seems to have a similar consistency is Medvedev. But unfortunately his great run last summer seems to have stalled.

I think he immediately recognized how arrogant it might seem to say Thiem will win a (single) slam one day as he stands on a podium to accept his SEVENTEENTH major trophy. So he course corrected and said "more than one." I don't have reason to believe he was insincere -- he probably just didn't feel the need to be precise with his language until that brief moment of self-reflection.

I wasn’t thinking clearly when I said this. But he would be extremely difficult to beat if his big shots would land in the court consistently throughout each tournament. His shots started failing him once Djokovic got back to a normal level though, which makes me think Thiem still hasn’t developed to the point I thought he had. And I was thinking if I saw him play at that level when he was 20, I would have thought he has a shot at being something very special.

When I was saying ATG potential, I was thinking 6 slams would be possible, with 3 or so at the French Open once Nadal retires or regresses enough.

What about Nadal? Earlier in his career his serve wasn’t that good. My guess is his returns weren’t all that great either. I actually don’t know how good his return is today, but he backs way up for it so it can’t be that good, right? He wins a lot of return games due to his groundstrokes.

To be fair, previous ATGs never had to put up with the Big3 and likely will have had much shorter careers than Thiem will have.

In 20-30 years, some guy like Thiem is going to win 30 grand slams, beasting his way through mug after mug until he's 40+ years old. Count on it.

I do think Nadal is an exception to that, as his court coverage, defense, shotmaking, etc are all incredible. Per Thiem, I'll be a little surprised if he doesn't retire with 2 or 3 slams to his name. Great on clay, and now a true threat at the HC slams. Not ATG, but enough to make the HOF.

nice guys finish last but consolidate themselves and other consolidate them well in return,
sometimes these nice guys prefer to lick and have others lick their wounds.
Lendl was in a similar boat for USO finals but Ivan was reliable. Stefanki could help.

Nole tried being nice and employed a Guru to help him after it helped his brother
but its doesnt suit him as he was born to fight and stick it up the stiff nosed patricians
There is no denying the R-complex should not be tamed for sports.
Sure help save the oceans but keep the Beast inside even if Massu tells you to!.
