Toni Nadal: "Will ruin the spectable for Australian fans"

What is Toni talking about? Rallies will still be very long.
And aren't faster rallies better for Rafa's injuries? Sometimes I don't get those guys.
They are saying they want longer rallies, then they complain that longer rallies destroy Rafa's knees. They seem confused.
Rafa should control Toni. At least Fed has his camp on a short leash. They don't dare to embarrass Fed in public.

Fed's permanent whining about the court speed is embarrassing. He wants the courts to be tailored so that he would benefit from it. He hopes that the fast courts help low-ranked players to knock out top-players (other than Fed) before SF.

Toni's honesty isn't embarrassing.

I don't think any of you play at a high level to understand these nuances.

I would still be interested in your response - here's my post again:

But you do? And what's there to understand? It's not rocket science.
We've all seen different court speed throughout the year on different courts. I personally find it hard to tell if this year is different than last year because
a) I've seen a whole lot of tennis in between and
b) I'm not live, which makes a hell of a difference.

And judging from the players comments so far, they apparently find it hard to tell whether there's a difference or not as well (Murray: Everything is the same. Rafa: I've never seen anything like it in Aus. Fed: It's ever so slightly faster than last year, but slower than Brisbane. Etc.).

There should be some kind of rule about it that could allow them to be fined for this shameful comments.

The difference is I don't claim I can judge the surfaces. Those who claim to have the burden of proof.

They get fined for this kind of comments:

Don't see the point, I know that's also reprehensible.

Your opinion doesn't matter to me that much.

LOL Joking about it makes it even worse, thanks for proving my point.

I guess joking about death would be fine to you as well.

Oh, let's not get into what is possible to joke about or not.

fact remains, TMF (and you) are lying.

Are you Nadal's lawyer? you always get so defensive when someone bashes your precious toro de oro. :p

I've explained to her a dozen times and there's no point in repeating it again. You can't convince her even if you list every article that are available on the internet.

Ah, I see. To me, it looks very similar, but I'm in no position to make absolute statements about it for the reasons mentioned above.

You guys are such suckers for taking the bait. He gets asked a question, he answers.

Then the news tries to turn it into a headline.

Then you all pick it up and run with it, like Toni is out there stamping his feet in anger. I would almost surely guess he says all of this pretty casually. What surfaces has Nadal not won on again? Oh yeah, none of them, because he wins everywhere. He just won the US Open which is faster than the AO.

On top of the his the AO has already stated the courts are 100% identical so who knows what is going on. So much outrage, and all of you do nothing yourselves in tennis, so get over it. You're looking for reasons to be upset at someone you've already decided not to like. It's fairly sad.

Completely agree with this comment :) Why are you people so obsessed with what Toni has to say? The man can't even express his opinion without you jumping down his neck and attacking and insulting him and his nephew.

He's not parading around and calling for a press conference to criticise the surface. He was asked by the spanish media to comment on this matter and he simply gave his opinion.

He was quoted as saying in Spanish sports daily As. Simple as that. He didn't threaten to boycott the tournament nor did he demand the surface to change. What is the problem here? He's entitled to his own opinion.

I've read that thread when the link was posted and all the Nadal fans are saying it was a joke like that doesn't mean anything, it makes it even worse. That's like writing something really offensive and putting a "lol" or a similar emoticon after it and passing it by as "oooo duhhh i was joking hehe haha".

One thing that people might also consider is that the courts across the venue do not play at the same speed. The reason for this generally is the main courts are re-laid each year and so are slower than the others which aren't (Plexicushion speeds up as it ages because it gets smoother - and it happens more than you might think), plus some are exposed to the elements 100% of the time compared to maybe only 80% of the time for the covered courts.

Similarly, the tournament director has said outright that they haven't sped the courts up this year. But, the players have said that Rod Laver plays slightly slower than Margaret Court - yet both would have been relaid. This suggest perhaps that the laying of these courts does have variables which, despite their efforts, they can't completely get rid of.

A previous club I played at had three Plexicushion courts which, when they were about 3 months old, one got a long split about 1m inside the baseline. They repaired that spot and for months it was noticeable grippier despite being laid using the exact same batch of surface material - and that was after only a couple of months difference in use and exposure to the elements. When the courts were a couple of years old they ceased to be the slow courts they once were - they had sped up a lot.

My bet is the balls are 90% of the difference the players are noticing on a given court. They've said the balls are different this year and, to my eye, the conditions seemed a quicker than other years, but they're definitely not as fast as the Nadal's seem to imply.

Do you have reading comprehension problems?. It's not just that it's a joke, it's that he didn't say he hoped they get injured. Read the link.

And for the sake of the argument, you actually don't think it's worse for someone to actually wish for someone to get injured? :|

" I trust Djokovic and Federer get injured"

Does everything need to be spelt out for you? He wants better for Nadal's chances to win tournaments if Fed and Nole get injured. Come on crissti, you can't defend EVERYTHING about Nadal and Toni. What else you going to defend? That Nadal scratching his bum and taking a whiff of it after is a good energizer for him?

The courts of the USO were slowed down in 2003 - to make the play more attractive.
As for spectators, professional sport without spectators is meaningless (like the theater can't function without an audience).

I'm a spectator and have no interest in seeing a 6 hour long ping pong match.

Because Toni should not have ANYTHING to say about the courts. He's just a coach/pimp.

I play Social Comps at Melbourne Park and they relay/repaint the surface on all the courts. They do this every year. The balls are what has changed.

The previous balls were terrible and after 3-5 games they are useless even at an amateur level. They would fluff up and wouldn't fly through the air as quick.

I'm glad they changed the balls, playing with them on PlexCushion surface is the slowest conditions I have experienced on a Tennis Court even when compared to the new Clay Courts at Melbourne Park.

Tony must've been hitting the bottles, there is no other explanation for his statements. He can't really believe what he is saying. The courts from what I've seen look a TINY bit faster and I very much doubt that it could "ruin" tennis for AO viewers.

His comparison with Messi taking penalties is outrageous because AO is not carpet speed so that points would be 2-3 shots, this tourney is still dominated by long rallies.

I'm guessing that some courts might have a bigger increase in speed but the courts that Rafa will play on(show courts) have probably remained the same.

"The spectators want a bit of rallying, a bit of tactics", said uncle Toni after they played for a bit less than 6 hours in 2012 final.

I guess by "tactics" Tio Toni must referencing Rafa looping ball after ball to players' backhands.

I dont know how anyone can defend this dope anymore. If rafa loses he will be injured or the courts are to fast. If he wins he will have overcome injuries and the fast courts. SIGH. I cant stand his team or him.
