Thanks for your participation. Unfortunately, I am a person who labels everything, so this answer is not satisfactory. The Laver Cup is indeed that....The Laver Cup.
He actually had some of his trophies melted to make the new trophy you see today.
Aka the WWE of tennis.I like Laver Cup for the staged tight matches, the fake drama, the fake player reactions. I like that almost all of the matches finish in 3 sets. It's a pure entertainment and great fun, something different from the regular tour that's for sure.
Aka the WWE of tennis.
In the end i see it as a cash grab only.

Halfway between exho and an ATP Cup type team event that I take more seriously.
I don't include it in my GW% calculations, so basically an exo a la the World Team Cup of yore. I'll never understand what marketing geniuses at the ATP/ITF were thinking when they decided to bastardize one of the sport's most prestigious tournaments (DC) while green-lighting not one but TWO (ATP Cup) new sideshows that detract from said historic event.
Speaking of which:
I've yet to catch a single sec of the ATP Cup. Is it really more serious than the Laver, or is that more because of the timing (around New Year's)?
Laver Cup is a fiefdom of Federer.
No idea why it is called Laver Cup when under the garb of Laver's name it is Federer running it along with Borg and Mcenroe.
It should be called Federer Cup.
Ryder Cup has been around for over 40 years. Who knows if Laver Cup will last that long but they get people to show up and the crowds are into it. I’ve been watching the Ryder Cup this week as well and so far it’s been quite boring. The European team is completely out of sorts, playing like crap. The score after a day and a half is 9 - 3 USA leading. And team USA usually performs best in the Sunday singles so this could be a complete blowout. At least the Laver Cup matches yesterday were competitive and a couple could have gone either way. What could it be classified as other than an exhibition?
I have no doubt that Federer hopes it will one day be held up as highly as the Ryder Cup is, and maybe one day it will get there (though tennis not being as popular as golf probably doesn't help its case) but nothing new ever shoots immediately up to that kind of level of prestige.
Unfortunately, yes. It should not award any points, it's totally unfair.Isn't it now an official ATP event where points are awarded? That was my understanding.

The weirdest tennis event we have known of. Impossible to classify. It's a monster.Official ATP event that counts towards ATP H2H matches in official statistics. No points, though.
It matters much to me, this is why I can't sleep well at night (among other causes). That's why I made this relevant thread.Who cares? Why does it matter what someone classifies it as?
I like it for what it is, tbh, it's always fun to watch top players go head to head. But, if it disappeared, I wouldn't be broken up about it, either. The weirdest tennis event we have know of. Impossible to classify. It's a monster.
2020 atp cup was awesome and even this year Russia win was excellent but I have never been serious about Laver cupIt's the ATP's idea of trying to take away from Davis Cup! The ITF and ATP have been at war for as long as I can remember and each have done things to hurt themselves and the game! I didn't think it could get worse with dueling YEC's back in the 90's (GS CUP a joke)! After all the whinging about long seasons, Federer of all people created this glorified exhibition called the Laver Cup! I've watched a few points here and there, but I can't take it seriously! The ATP Cup was interesting last year when Novak led Serbia to the Cup, but the dynamics were different with Nadal and Med challenging Novak at the end!
Right. I forgot there was an ATP cup, I think I need to make another thread.2020 atp cup was awesome and even this year Russia win was excellent but I have never been serious about Laver cup

Ok I’ll bite. If the matches are predetermined why has Team World not won a LC yet?Since the results of every match are pre-determined, we can all safely agree it's an exhibition. The fact the ATP agreed to put LC results into official H2H tallies was insanity. But until the ATP awards points to the LC, it will remain without any question an exo.
That would be a miracle. If so, it would be too obvious that's predetermined.Ok I’ll bite. If the matches are predetermined why has Team World not won a LC yet?
So the matches are pre-determined so that Team Europe wins every year? How is it good for the LC if the same team wins every year? That would be a miracle. If so, it would be too obvious that's predetermined.
It’s entertainment.
That’s why the focus is on resourcing entertaining players.
Fake? Perhaps. While the Laver Cup is an exbo, I don't believe it's a typical one where players are paid by "non tennis" entities specifically to entertain a selected clientele, and by extension the public as an afterthought. For example, the Kygrios (sp?) Federer match from a few years ago I believe was an authetic effort on both players to win. It seems to me that the up and comers know this is a great opportunity to play the top players that they may not otherwise get to do so in a typical tournament. The top players get to test their mettle against the popular at the moment up and comers to give the crowd the matchups they would love to see. Now, some players most likely take it more seriously than others, not realizing the long term effect of not being asked back by Fed and the organizers. How big of a deal is that? I suppose it depends on the personality of each player. Federer and the top players have so much clout within tennis circles that positive praise from them could lead to great opportunities outside of the existing tournament structure. Some will see this and play accordingly. Some will see this, not care, and play accordingly (ie for their own reasons and thus may be great or mediocre play, I suppose). Some will see only the short term, surface level benefits and play accordingly.I like Laver Cup for the staged tight matches, the fake drama, the fake player reactions. When World best ranked player is at least within the top ATP 10, it may help a bit.So the matches are pre-determined so that Team Europe wins every year? How is it good for the LC if the same team wins every year?
Thanks for your vote. Next time, before I make a Paul, I will seek for your expert advice.Thank you for the pole. My pole choice is oscillating between option I - a waste of time, and option J - absolute bobbins.
