You can't be a top athlete with that ideology.

There's quite a few top athletes who are either vegetarian or vegan, in sports as varied as American football and cycling. I read that BJK and Martina are both vegetarians but I wonder if anyone knows they were on veggie diet while competing?

That doesn't mean anything.

Anyway, I would expect more women tennis players to be vegetarian because
they would feel bad for the animals.

Actually Prince Fielder, who is a massive (6ft., 280lb.) baseball player, publicly became vegetarian citing treatment of animals in factory farms.

Quick note.

Do not EVER bring up Martina, BJK or Amelie when replying to Joe Pike. It's for your own good.

Martina has stated that she stopped being veg. after deciding to make a comeback.

Maybe things have changed since this thread died. Any current pros that are vegan/vegetarian?

Post 2010 because he has said that he cut out eating a lot of 'junk food' after he hired the services of Dr. Igor who put him on the gluten-free diet.

Most junk food is vegetarian. Chips/crisps...cookies, cakes, pastries...snack foods of all sorts...

But it also includes things like beefburgers and meaty pizzas. He used to eat a lot of pizzas as his parents owned a pizzeria during his formative years.

Capy bara? What is the connection to tennis?

The 2nd largest rodent in the world, the beaver, seems built for tennis. It is well documented that beavers can and do volley mud balls at their lodges with their paddle-like tails and could be among the best volleyers in the top 100. A beaver's teeth also grows continuously so there's no fear they will be worn down by biting tennis trophies. And yes, they are herbivores.

I don't agree with people saying that non-vegetarian food is necessary for nutrition. India has a pool of successful athletes who have been raised as a vegetarian and didn't convert to non-vegetarian later. To name a few: Sushil Kumar (Wrestler, Olympic Silver and Bronze medalist), Yogeshwar Dutt (Wrestler, Bronze Medalist ), More than quarter of Indian cricket team etc.
Carl Lewis was later a vegan and attributed his 1991 success to vegan diet. You would find a lot of other cases.

Many of the prominent ultra-distance runners are vegan/vegetarians - read Scott Jurek's (7 time consecutive winner of the 100 mile Western States Trail Run) book "Eat and Run". The notion that you need animal-based food for proper nutrition or endurance is a complete fallacy.

Yes, he is. In fact almost whole wrestling contingent of India for Olympics 2012 was (lacto-vegetarian).
Sushil Kumar is not only a vegetarian, he also promotes it.

These are some of the excerpts about Indian wrestling group:
"There are boys ranging from ages 10 to 25. All of us aim to touch that coveted gold. None of us touch any form of non-vegetarian food. We get our protein from dal, almonds and buffalo milk. With the endless hours of training, we put in every day, a nutritious diet is important, but not a frugal one."

A pity Fed stopped being one. I'd like him better for sure :)

Interesting. But why?

I can't believe that there are still people out there that seriously think that without animal-products you can not get proper nutrition or enough calories.....

Any aspect in animal products you can get from other, vegan, sources. It might take more effort, but it's very doable. Most protein you can get from legumes, avocado, nuts, certain grains etc. Calories also not that difficult (nuts mainly).

I like better people who care about animals.
