We are screwed ... the Pickleballers are coming

Some context:

We used to have a dozen+ quality public tennis courts you could play on. Today ... other than our fantastic public tennis center (about $10 for an hour and a half), you really can't find a freshly surfaced public court. So it was pretty good news to hear that the city had recently resurfaced a couple of courts. That was ... until I heard of ... and saw this:

Not great pics ... was evening so let me describe. Tennis court on the right as usual. If you look close on the left, you can see the 2nd tennis court net that is not used only to separate two pickleball courts from the other two. As you can see, the pickleball courts run perpendicular to the tennis courts ... so all pickleballs that go past the defender goes to the tennis court. Same risk the other way ... all of these pickleballers risk stepping on a tennis ball.

The Pickleballers are coming ... this should not be a duel purpose space (talking country, not the court :p)

Pickleballers are taking over tennis courts everywhere.
The better tennis courts have fenses so collision risk is not the issue.
Maybe the parter should communicate like "player oncoming" sorta like "ball on" when your shot intrudes neighbor court.

I've played tennis for years. Wife never. Over a year ago started her journey to tennis with Pickleball then mini tennis with kids balls on Pickleball court and now to real tennis albeit still with kids balls on full court. Going the opposite way!

Good news for you but I dont think yours is the trend but rather the outlier

I have to say ... it would have been fun to see my mother play pickleball when she had to give up tennis.

Fence better be a wall ... sound proof. ;) They should change the paddle and probably ball.

Not just a problem for tennis players ... neighborhoods. Of course, a tennis court with Sharapova on it isn't neighborhood friendly either.

as someone who has lived next to a busy road all my life, i can't sleep without the noise of cars at times.
pretty sure the courts would of increased the value of her property also?
great for guests who might come over!?
if the balls had been flying over the fence and hitting cars then yeah thats a problem.
guess i can see the annoyance tho. it could also be worse tho!!!

Don't be so sure. In tickleball you cannot pick up the ball with your racket and foot. You must bend down every time. For people with eye issues and progressive lenses like me, it can cause dizziness over a period of time.

Wow, pickleball is really loud. I guess that is expected, hitting a hard plastic ball with a hard paddle.
I'm just glad I live in CA where playing pickleball carries the same penalty as using plastic straws, 6 months of jail time.

Switching to softer, Nerf-like ball would make pickleball less noisy and minimize the risk of getting pickle elbow.

I think that sound is part of the addiction. Have you ever seen seniors at the slot machines? :D

All I know is public courts are being converted in my area. I don't mean a few lines painted on the tennis courts... I mean no more tennis courts.

I’ve noticed more courts with the pickle ball lines on them. I was playing a league match the other day and there was pickle ball going on the courts behind us so there was a fence between us so no worries about the ball getting in the court but the noise is annoying.

The Pickleballers are coming

Listen my children
And I will holler
About the pending arrival
Of the Pickleballer

Their numbers are legion
The hordes only grow
The tennistas decline
And cannot stem the flow

The sound of the shot
Is like a clock that is ticking
Counting down the time
Of the tennistas, thinking

"What an odd game!
How quaint! How droll!"
Realizing too late
On tennis its toll.

Say what you will
About the Pickleballers many
Their group is a dollar
To the tennistas penny.

Y'all are hating on pickleball for no good reason. Pickleball is a great game for players that either can't play tennis, or they don't want to take the time to take up tennis. Very few people I've seen have actually left tennis for pickleball. It's great to see more people out there being active and having a good time.

Nah ... you missed the point. It's the cannibalization and encroachment of tennis courts. If someone replaces one of two courts with a basketball court ... same problem.

The y'all are being selfish. Pickleball deserves court space the same as tennis does. Tennis people complain about having pickleball lines on their court and ask for specialized pickleball courts. Then pickleball gets specialized courts and people still complain. Pickleball is a more efficient use of court space than tennis. Unless you already have a problem with not having enough tennis courts available, which I rarely see, then you shouldn't complain about it. Would it be nice to not have to give them that space? Of course. But unless y'all are constantly having all your tennis courts filled with tennis, give the pickleball people some courts and stop complaining.

We do ... I explained that in the original post.

"Pickleball is a more efficient use of court space than tennis."

Not relevant ... tennis courts are more efficient use of space than football stadiums, and football stadiums are more efficient use of space than golf courses. I don't see anyone carving out a piece of the stadium parking lot or part of the public golf course for tennis courts. Just because both tennis and pickleball involve nets and balls, there is this leap that tennis players need to share their courts. There should be separate facilities for pickleball ... and both should stand on their own for public $. I have no problem with the city saying we now get 5 public courts instead of the 10 from past years because tennis popularity (demand) has declined. I have a huge problem with that pic in my original post. That is not safe, someone will get hurt.

No, you said you have a lack of free nice courts. You are spoiled to even have one free nice court. $10 for an hour and a half is a great price for tennis courts. If you don't want to pay, you shouldn't expect to have nice courts.

Also, if tennis is declining, why shouldn't they turn a tennis court into some pickleball courts? I agree, the way they did it in the pics you posted are unsafe. But people on here are complaining about more than just what way the courts are facing.

lol ... settle down @rogerroger917 :D ... it's ok if I disagree some with Bagel.

"I agree, the way they did it in the pics you posted are unsafe."

Then we agree on the most important point. ;)

I wasn't complaining about the $10 at our tennis center. It's brand new and frickin awesome. It's the same courts I played my singles tournaments at when I was your age. Us older players look in marvel how nice it is compared to what it was back then. That said ... would not have happened without a wealthy donor.

But you are conflating two things ... what I find as good value, and what many others would find a barrier to entry. I started on free public courts ... it was always one of the great things about tennis.

"If you don't want to pay, you shouldn't expect to have nice courts."

I do pay ... taxes. A certain portion of taxes goes to schools and parks and golf courses. There is always going to be a competition for that $, free maintained park tennis courts are in that mix (or at least they used to be).

Good debate ... we can just agree to disagree on some of it. It's a tennis forum, so you will be outnumbered with frustrated tennis players watching our beloved tennis decline.

The pickleballers used to put tape on the tennis courts to mark them out. Tape, of course, is a hazard to tennis players playing tennis. So the tennis players started removing the tape. My guess is that the cost of the tape and the labor and time of laying it out made it uneconomic. The pickleballers moved over to the basketball courts.

You are lucky (or live in a place in Atlanta) if your tax dollars go towards tennis courts. My high school team made it to state 3 or 4 years in a row and we had cracks all over the place that would make the Grand Canyon jealous. And we didn't have the worst courts in our conference either. That's my experience with free courts at least, it may not be most people's, I can't say. Tennis wasn't a very high priority in my area.

I don't get it...if they like to go au naturel why bother with the hat, shades, shoes, and socks

No, actually I will be both. I've already taught a little pickleball, and soon I'll be going to a certification workshop to get my pickleball coaching certification on top of my tennis certifications. I enjoy pickleball. I don't take it as seriously as tennis, and it's not as much fun to me, but I can still enjoy it. And if I can make some money off of it why wouldn't I?

Hahaha, wow, you're a little ridiculous. I still prefer playing tennis. I can still make more money from tennis. I would rather teach tennis than pickleball. But I can still make more money and have more fun from doing both than I can from only tennis, assuming I have extra time where I'm not doing anything on court if I only do tennis.

The more people he coaches in pickle. The more pickle players. Most pickle players are retirees. They have time to petition city councils to make more pickle courts. Next thing you know no more tennis courts.
Not quite. In order for them to get rid of tennis courts, there has to be a lack of tennis players. As long as there are still tennis players, there will be tennis courts. There might be more pickleball courts, and there might be some areas where the number of tennis courts are reduced, but tennis won't disappear. Your argument is called the slippery slope fallacy, and is logically not sound.
