We are screwed ... the Pickleballers are coming

Some context:

We used to have a dozen+ quality public tennis courts you could play on. Today ... other than our fantastic public tennis center (about $10 for an hour and a half), you really can't find a freshly surfaced public court. So it was pretty good news to hear that the city had recently resurfaced a couple of courts. That was ... until I heard of ... and saw this:

Not great pics ... was evening so let me describe. Tennis court on the right as usual. If you look close on the left, you can see the 2nd tennis court net that is not used only to separate two pickleball courts from the other two. As you can see, the pickleball courts run perpendicular to the tennis courts ... so all pickleballs that go past the defender goes to the tennis court. Same risk the other way ... all of these pickleballers risk stepping on a tennis ball.

The Pickleballers are coming ... this should not be a duel purpose space (talking country, not the court )

Pickleballers are taking over tennis courts everywhere.
The better tennis courts have fenses so collision risk is not the issue.
Maybe the parter should communicate like "player oncoming" sorta like "ball on" when your shot intrudes neighbor court.

I've played tennis for years. Wife never. Over a year ago started her journey to tennis with Pickleball then mini tennis with kids balls on Pickleball court and now to real tennis albeit still with kids balls on full court. Going the opposite way!

Don't be so sure. In tickleball you cannot pick up the ball with your racket and foot. You must bend down every time. For people with eye issues and progressive lenses like me, it can cause dizziness over a period of time.

I'm just glad I live in CA where playing pickleball carries the same penalty as using plastic straws, 6 months of jail time.

Switching to softer, Nerf-like ball would make pickleball less noisy and minimize the risk of getting pickle elbow.

I’ve noticed more courts with the pickle ball lines on them. I was playing a league match the other day and there was pickle ball going on the courts behind us so there was a fence between us so no worries about the ball getting in the court but the noise is annoying.

Y'all are hating on pickleball for no good reason. Pickleball is a great game for players that either can't play tennis, or they don't want to take the time to take up tennis. Nah ... you missed the point. It's the cannibalization and encroachment of tennis courts. If someone replaces one of two courts with a basketball court ... same problem.

The y'all are being selfish. Pickleball deserves court space the same as tennis does. Tennis people complain about having pickleball lines on their court and ask for specialized pickleball courts. Then pickleball gets specialized courts and people still complain. Pickleball is a more efficient use of court space than tennis. Unless you already have a problem with not having enough tennis courts available, which I rarely see, then you shouldn't complain about it. Would it be nice to not have to give them that space? Of course. But unless y'all are constantly having all your tennis courts filled with tennis, give the pickleball people some courts and stop complaining.

Not relevant ... tennis courts are more efficient use of space than football stadiums, and football stadiums are more efficient use of space than golf courses. I don't see anyone carving out a piece of the stadium parking lot or part of the public golf course for tennis courts. Just because both tennis and pickleball involve nets and balls, there is this leap that tennis players need to share their courts. There should be separate facilities for pickleball ... and both should stand on their own for public $. I have no problem with the city saying we now get 5 public courts instead of the 10 from past years because tennis popularity (demand) has declined. I have a huge problem with that pic in my original post. That is not safe, someone will get hurt.

Then we agree on the most important point.

I wasn't complaining about the $10 at our tennis center. It's brand new and frickin awesome. It's the same courts I played my singles tournaments at when I was your age. Us older players look in marvel how nice it is compared to what it was back then. That said ... would not have happened without a wealthy donor.

But you are conflating two things ... what I find as good value, and what many others would find a barrier to entry. I started on free public courts ... it was always one of the great things about tennis.

I do pay ... taxes. A certain portion of taxes goes to schools and parks and golf courses. There is always going to be a competition for that $, free maintained park tennis courts are in that mix (or at least they used to be).

The pickleballers used to put tape on the tennis courts to mark them out. Tape, of course, is a hazard to tennis players playing tennis. So the tennis players started removing the tape. My guess is that the cost of the tape and the labor and time of laying it out made it uneconomic. The pickleballers moved over to the basketball courts.

You are lucky (or live in a place in Atlanta) if your tax dollars go towards tennis courts. My high school team made it to state 3 or 4 years in a row and we had cracks all over the place that would make the Grand Canyon jealous. And we didn't have the worst courts in our conference either. That's my experience with free courts at least, it may not be most people's, I can't say. Tennis wasn't a very high priority in my area.

I've already taught a little pickleball, and soon I'll be going to a certification workshop to get my pickleball coaching certification on top of my tennis certifications. I enjoy pickleball. I don't take it as seriously as tennis, and it's not as much fun to me, but I can still enjoy it. And if I can make some money off of it why wouldn't I?

But I can still make more money and have more fun from doing both than I can from only tennis, assuming I have extra time where I'm not doing anything on court if I only do tennis.

There might be more pickleball courts, and there might be some areas where the number of tennis courts are reduced, but tennis won't disappear.
