We Nadal Fans Should Keep Our Mouths Shut

This is going to a very difficult final. Wawrinka is playing the tennis of his life. He beat Nole for crying out loud. While Nadal is the fiercest competitor in this history of the sport, he is also prone to getting tighter than a drum, especially as his career goes on, and especially if things don't start well for him in the first set. Have you guys even been watching this tournament? He's a choke hook from being down 2-1 to Dimitrov and if Fed doesn't fly that shot last night, Fed's got a set point right off the bat. This has been close, grinding, hard work for Nadal. I expect this next match to be no different.

I see this match as something that might be very similar to Fed/Roddick '09--a player that historically had a bad record against the other but was playing with house money. We all know what might have happened if Roddick makes that bh volley.

I'm surprised that more of the Nadal fans on this forum don't emulate their tennis hero: keep your head down, work hard, speaking calmly and prudently about the future, and celebrate after you actually win something. They're not giving Rafa a trophy for increasing his h2h with Federer.

I'm not saying Nadal will lose. Yes, he's the decent favorite, but this could be a real dog-fight, especially if Stan wins the first set and gets that no-sets monkey off his back.

I know I'm going to be nervous for another 36 hours.

I think most of the people talking up Rafa's invincibility are haters trying to get the dread of Rafa winning #14 out of the way. Any smack talk I give is in good fun in any case, we all know there are no certainties in any sport, much less the mental roller coaster of tennis matches.

Not going to pre-celebrate, I just hope Rafa brings his best against Stan on Sunday and, if he does, I feel pretty confident considering their record.

I don't see anyone taking a win for granted at this point. The final will almost surely be tougher than the semi was for him.

Most of the Rafa fans are objective and realistic (well, with a few exceptions). And we would not underestimate the Resurgent Stanimal. Most of these fans who are making these threads about Rafa already has this in the bag are either Rafa haters (to jinx 'em) or fans of others who just gave up hope.

Here's hoping and praying that Rafa wins this one.

Most people taking the win for granted are actually Nadal haters, read the different threads ;) (like BoM just said)

Personally, I think the win is granted but of course it is just my opinion :)

Rafa is as big as a favorite as they come, leading Stan 26-0 in sets.

That said, Stan has a chance, because of the following reasons.
1) Stan is clearly having the best year of his career.
2) He just beat Djoko on Djoko's home turf despite an almost as miserable h2h vs. Djoko as against Rafa
3) He serves big enough to trouble Rafa with his serve
4) He hits big enough off both wings to hit it past him
5) He can, in principle, play freely, because he's such a big underdog (it's just as likely, if not even more, that he will be overwhelmed by the occasion though)
6) He seems to have a new found belief that he can actually beat the best of the best (and played his best match ever vs. Rafa as late as the WTF)

7) - why he probably won't win after all:
7a) Rafa is Rafa.
7b) Stan still has a OHB that he can hit pretty well, but not that good/good enough above his shoulder
7c) Stans movement, defense and RoS probably won't quite cut is vs. Rafa. And he's not exactly the man in the TB's (he had a negative TB last year and lost all of his TB's at the WTF, including two to Rafa in sets, where he was the better player and won more points).

That said - best of luck to Stan. Would be great to have one more slam winner, who believes in himself in future slams. And well, you gotta love his game and character, at least I do.

I agree with the thread title, not with the post though.

I agree. I expect Nadal to win, but I don't think it will be super easy. Stan gets at least a set in my estimation. That said, I don't see how on god's green earth he gets 3 given that he's 0-26 as it is.

Good points. Some of these morons talking about CYGS and GOAT; give it a break. The guy won a semi against someone he has historically dominated. Granted it seemed as though Fed was playing incredible, it still was only one win.

I'm not taking anything for granted about the final. I hope Nadal wins, because it would be a really big career achievement.

Going into the 1993 French Open final, Jim Courier led Sergi Bruguera 4-0 in their head-to-head, and 9-0 in sets. Bruguera won the final in 5 sets. It's not unprecedented.

And let's not forget the 2009 US Open final, where Federer lost to del Potro, in the same year that del Potro had been double bagelled by Federer at the Australian Open.

I really hope he wins too; it would be a spectacular achievement. I thought after the USO I would be satisfied forever as a Nadal fan. But he shocks me. I guess he's not satisfied. Keeps on going. Incredible.

The vast majority of people who are already calling Nadal the champion are angry Fed or Djokovic fans. The sane Nadal fans know history doesn't matter right now, Stan is a different player now than he was when he was consistently getting torn apart by Rafa. I expect a tight match.

yeah, and he was leading 7-0 in the h2h or something. Nadal is the big favorite. But even the favorite can fall - as Djoko did.

Wawrinka only beat Novak thanks to his sloppy errors in the final two points.... a huge slice of luck was involved

You really are upset about Rafa beating Fed, aren't you?. Every comment of yours is just whining about it.

I expect a tough match in the final. I am certainly more worried about this match than about Ferrer at RG. Wawrinka can definitely play at a higher level than Ferrer (who has no chance of beating a healthy Rafa in a match like this imo).

I've seen a lot of jubilation at Rafa's victory over Federer by Rafans, but, unless I've missed something, I haven't seen any Rafa fan taking the final for granted.

This is only the 2nd time Rafa and Stan will play in a slam. The last time was at AO 2007 when Rafa won 62 62 62.

They didn't take the semi-final for granted given that Nadal had a blister the size of a pineapple on his palm.

Don't be so pathetically naive. You know how completely opposite the Djokowrinka match-up is to the Nadwinka match-up. You saw how close Djokowrinka was at 2013 AO and 2013 USO too.

I'll never understand why people get so worked up about their favourite players and hate certain other players. I wouldn't have any hair if I hated Federer or Nadal as a Roddick and Djokovic fan.

N.S.K. apart, I don't think that Nadal's fans take the final for granted. Wawrinka is in the form of his life and it's his first time in a slam final. Nobody can predict how he will react. If he is on a mission, good luck Rafa.

The problem I find with "Nadal fans" is that if he loses, they'll make up so many excuses, the blister on his hand will probably be one of them.

I find they always say Nadal wasn't at his best, rather than praise his opponent for winning.

I hope Wawrinka wins tomorrow, be interesting to see what excuses are used.

I agree with the OP, it will be a tight encounter, but Stan cannot match the mouvement of Novak.
He will be forced to go for broke, and he will miss most of the time.
If Rafa is healthy, he grinds down Stan like he did Soderling in the french final.

It will Straight sets or 4 sets for Rafa. Not a walk in the park match, Rafa fans better hope he plays his best...instead of pre-cheering the 15th slam.

TWers are crazy...do you guys really believe this jinxing BS? Nadal is winning in 3, 4 sets max (if inspired Stan shows up and Nadal goes AWOL for a set).

It's a fairly safe bet that a guy who's never won a set off Rafa before, isn't going to win 3 in one match.

Not a Nadal fan, but I thought I'd chime in anyway :p

that is a very good point, but anything is possible, of course I'm hoping Rafa wins, nevertheless I approach this match just like I believe Nadal will, with caution.

It happened at the 1993 French Open final, when Bruguera beat Courier in 5 sets, having previously lost every set against Courier in their previous 4 matches. It's not unprecedented. They both start on zero in this match. Nadal has to win from scratch, and I really hope he does it.

Wow so over 20 years later it happens again but even more extreme in losing all 26 sets and 12 matches previously. Never expected this result especially after that Federer match and Nadal's record against other 1HBH's:

Gasquet 12-0
Kohlschreiber 11-1
Almagro 10-0
Youzhny 10-4
Lopez 9-2
Robredo 7-0
Haas 5-0
Dimitrov 4-0
