In 2017 Nadal won two slams, two masters, reached one other slam final and two other masters finals. He finished first with 10645 points.

Nole so far this year has won two slams and one master and is 4200 points behind where Nadal finished 2017. With 4500 points left in Tier 1 tournaments what does he need to win to have an equivalent year? All three remaining tournaments? Maybe just the WTF and one masters?

It would be hard to match Nadal points wise because Nadal played well the whole year in 2017. Djokovic just started playing extremely well in the grass season this year so he missed almost half the year playing at a top level. I do think if Djokovic wins another Masters and the WTF he would still have the better season. Some could argue that that extra Slam final is worth more and they would probably have a point but it's just hard to argue against 2 Slams, WTF and 2 Masters.

Is there a need? He is easily the best player in the world in 2018.

However, if you ask, winning one of Shanghai or Paris, and WTF will make his 2018 greater than Nadals 2017.

No need as such. But all we do here is compare hypotheticals.

Couldn't have put it better myself mate. It does look like whoever ends this year at #1 that it'll be the first time since 2003 that a player hasn't scored at least 10,000 points but I doubt Djokovic will care too much about that if he finishes the season with 2 majors plus The Real Slam ;) and the WTF.

Let’s see Nadal won RG & USO + Reached AO Final , 2 Masters(MC & Madrid) + Reached two other Masters finals , 2 ATP 500 + 1 Final , For me option 1 cause Djokovic was missing until Rome

Yea finishing with 3 Slams :D and the WTF is awesome anyway you look at it and I'm sure he would not complain. It would definitely be unique though because he started the year at 6-6 which is a .500 record and horrible for his standards. What an amazing turnaround.

I don't think anyone would've believed he'd go from 6-6 to 34-4 in the space of a few months which would include title runs at Wimbledon, Cincinnati and the US Open. I still can't quite take it all in myself.

I just didn't see it coming and yes it is really hard to process how he turned it around that fast and that dramatically.

2018 may end as 2016: the winner of most slams not getting the YE#1. Same player both times.

Isn't it just wonderful? :) The only thing that saddens me is that ccO isn't around to share in our delight. :(

;)

It seems he got axed. The other option is that he couldnt stand Djokovic winning Wimbledon so much that he decided to leave the site - though the second option is unlikely imo.I dont like Djokovic winning either but I am not going to leave the site because he is on winning spree.

By the end of the year he would have matched Nadal 2017 season imo.He will win one of the remaining Masters 1000 events and win WTF and unless Nadal does really well at this part of the reason,Djokovic will take the Year End Number one as well.If this happens he will have 2 Slams,2 Masters 1000 titles and 1 WTF plus the Year End Number one which will be better than Nadal 2017 season.

With only the WTF to go here’s how Nadal’s 2017 compares with Nole’s 2018:

Nadal 2017: 2 slams, 1 slam final, 2 masters, 2 masters finals, YE1
Nole 2018: 2 slams, 2 masters, 1 masters final, YE1

Pretty close but Nadal has won a bit more. If Nole wins the WTF does that put him ahead? Tied?

The year is over. Here are the results:

Nadal 2017: 2 slams, 1 slam final, 2 masters, 2 masters finals, YE1
Nole 2018: 2 slams, 2 masters, 1 masters final, YE1, WTF final

Pretty close, maybe Nadal ahead by a bit?

Both better results than Fed at the same age (2012) though.

RAFA also won two ATP500s

I voted for "WTF Final and one masters," so I'm sticking with Rafa. Although still making the final of Paris & London helps Novak's case.
