Will this be Agassi's Last U.S. Open?

Will this be Agassi's last U.S. Open. I think it will be. I get that sense by his facial expressions during the ceremony. He would also want to end on a high point.

But think about this: as long as he's playing he's getting endorsement cash and by being an active player it's easier to raise money for his foundation. Once he retires, that's going to get tougher.

But I can see where knowing you can't beat Fed at AO, W, or USO and Nadal at the FO, there's not a lot of reason to hang around.

I'd love to see him in Shanghai in Nov - but if he doesn't play many tournaments he's not going to have the points to stay in the Top 8.

I remember him mentioning the foundation in relation to how good Tennis has been to him. So you have a very good point there. Nice guy, Andre, willing to put in the work for some divine work.

The way he thanked the audience for the last 20yrs, sure seems like he was saying goodbye.

at some point andre has to think about his wife and kids, instead of being on the road all the time. but andre wants that one last title.
He could play a limited schedule and still see plenty of the kids: 4 Slams + most of the Masters Series (minus Monte Carlo).

After his USO run it would be dumb to quit - there's still only 1 guy on the planet who can beat him consistently.

Of course I've never had a cortisone shot in the back - might not be a lot of fun...

This is what he had to say about that.
Q. Andre, are you saying you're leaving, meaning this is your last Open, or do you just say ?? you took the microphone and said, "I just want to thank you guys for the last 20 years." Is that because you're unsure whether you'll be back here next year or not?

ANDRE AGASSI: Well, I'm unsure about what I'm going to do in a month, let alone a year from now. But as of now, my intention is to keep working and keep doing what it is I do. You know, only thing better than the last 20 years will be the last 21 years

his health is also an issue. things fell into place about as well they could and andre still couldn't win the us open. he definitely cant win the french or wimby. so i dont know where he's gonna get that last title. at some point in time he gotta realize he has had a good carreer and has all the money he needs. and majors are the only thing that mean anything and another one just aint gonna come. and then theres father time.

noone thought sampras would get another slam but he did when least expected so, i think andre should keep playing as long as feels a GS is attainable. money is not an issue for him and steffi graf!!!

I hope that it is not. I still enjoy seeing him play. But I think this might have been it for him. The expression on his face and saying Thanks for 20 years. Plus i think he was in pain by the end of the match. Plus I really can't imagine him playing if he can't give it a 100%.

Have any of you guys heard what Andre's said to the questions that are very similiar to the ones you just asked? When asked if this might be his last US Open, Andre has always answered that ever if his love of the game goes away and if his health holds up, he will quit. The fact that he made it to the finals at age 35 just means he can still hang in there for a LONG time. There is no reason to quit anyways, he raises money for a foundation and he still plays great.

The reason he thanked the fans for the last 20 years is probably because he doesn't know what'll happen in the future. He doesn't know if his back will be healed all the way, so his gratitude is given early just in case it is his last, but he most likely has no intention of quitting right now.

I think he would have actually announced it straight forward. Otherwise, us doubters are doubting it since it wasn't officially announced by him that he actually "quit" or "retires".

The last time I checked, Michael Jordan was retired and he still gets endorsement cash
My point is, he doesn't NEED to play to bring in endorsements, nor would he have any trouble raising money for his foundation if he stopped playing.

He has given $20 million of his own money to the foundation. It will be tougher to contribute at that level if he stops playing. May be he can raise money using his profile.

Problem with that idea is, his ranking will drop seriously which means he could meet Federer or Nadal in the 1st or 2nd Rd of a Slam like the time he had to play Sampras in the Qtrs. or was it Rd of 16 at the USO ...

The day Agassi retires will be a very sad day for tennis indeed. Fed and Agassi are probably 2 of the most well liked, articulate and watchable players out there. I will tune in for any match they play.

btw don't forget that Pete didn't announce his retirement till almost a year after his last match. I'm sure Agassi will want to play year end Masters Cup and AO 2006 if he can, though.

I think Agasi should bow out, unless Federer gets injure, he's never going to get past him, and so really, hen the only reason he's still around is to win another major, what's the point. Having said that, Agassi has a great record at the Australian, and if he had a shot at winning one, that would be his best chance, and it's only a few months away.

he also didnt say to the fans "ill see you next year" which he usually does. He's probably going to contemplate his future, see how his back is at the end of the year, then make a decision, i hope he stays around

How much longer does he want to be called Grandpa. And listen to the announcers say come out and see the old guy play the best player in the world. It time for Agassi to call it a career, yesterday was as good as it gets for him.

Turn the sport over to the up and coming players, there are plenty hungry and ready to take over.
