As much as anything, this is also a proof that basing your game on skill and technique pays dividends as you age. Federer is able to produce tennis like this precisely because he always was the type of player who outplayed and outsmarted his opponents, rather than outrun them or outmuscle them.

Fed will LOSE. Yes, I said it. LOSE. BUT only IF he does not serve well in the final. I cannot see Berdych beating him unless he is way off. Thing is I like Cilic & Sam (when his game is on)

Really well played. Raonic served at 73% but Fed didn't wilt and dominated on first serve.

Nothing's a lock here as hell have two tough matches left.

I think that is the 3rd best grass court match played by Fed ever. I thought tactically he was approaching the game correctly. Made sure he controlled his own serve and got Raonic on the move.

Raonic on the other hand, where was his forehand today? That performance from Raonic was as bad he's given in a big match.

9/10 for Fed.
2/10 for Raonic.

I find it hard to believe that Roger would fend off BPs and reverse engineer a TB against a 2/10 Raonic in his 3rd best match ever on his favourite surface.

Raonic was beaten in straight sets by an old man on grass. If you think he deserves more than 2/10, then you don't watch much tennis. Raonic was dreadful today and the core of it was his FH.

I said it before, no one is stopping THIS Federer, and with Djokovic gone, his looks untouchable. I expect his level to get even higher for Berdych.
Hitman, who are you rooting for to win Wimbledon with Djoker hobbled? 98% of Nole fans would root for anyone other than Roger because 19 slams will be insurmountable for Djoker to reach. But I think you're part of that magical 2% who thinks magnanimously. :D

We need to start talking about 20 slams. so, 19 is in the bag.

Never, ever, ever say that. EVER. Nothing is in the bag until Fed wins MP on Sunday, and he hasn't even reached the final yet. There have been dozens of matches late in slams where everyone thought 'it's a done deal." How about Stan-Rafa in the AO final? How about Djoker-Stan in the FO final? How about Mac-Lendl '84 FO final? What about Roger-Cilic in the USO semis?

Fed could get injured, Berdych could serve lights out at 80%, Cilic could red line... never claim a slam until the final point is won.

I already felt the slam record was out of reach even when the gap was five. Winning slams is not easy, and Djokovic was entering his 30s. I wasn't hellbent on being obsessed with that record. What I really wanted for Novak was that career slam and NCYGS, anything after that is a bonus. He is an ATG now, no one can ever take that away from him, and his legacy is safe no matter what happens from here.

As for Federer, I felt this year has been a celebration of Fedal, and felt very strongly that Federer was winning Wimbledon. I will be very happy for Federer, and his fans if he wins number 19 now, with Djokovic out of the way. Not because his slam record increases, which is what many Fed fans are looking forward for, but because it just feels like the picture perfect ending for Federer's run at Wimbledon, to stand alone at the top. He is the grass GOAT, just seems right he wins it one last time.

I am getting ahead of it. I know, I know. But Federer winning 8 Wimbledon titles will establish him as clear cut Wimby GOAT and shut the mouth of his detractors. If he does so, I will bump every such thread of Blocker and 90's clay.
It's a shame the no excuses thread got nuked. That was possibly the best thread we've ever had on the forum. At least in the years I've been here.

Agreed, even Berdych I'm worried about. Just 2 more to go. Come on Fed! Bring the form he has so far, it's near impossible to see him losing.

Okay - Chris Evert said the same thing about Rafa, and I was the only one agitated about Mueller and his four aces in a row the previous round (especially since the only person I'd ever seen pull that before has been Roger).

Just .... let's just watch the match.

Milos is a fighter -- Roger is just a great tennis strategist when he has his full head in the game, on top of everything else he brings to the party.

Did the same when he beat him last year too, this time around Federer was able to come up with the goods on the most crucial points. Beautiful to see.

Well keep in mind I'm saying IF he has that form, not that he WILL have that form. IF he has that form I really fancy his chances. Just like if Rafa had his form prior, there's no chance Muller wins that match.

while it would be nice to add to the slam record and also increase distance between him and rafa, fed winning an 8th is what means the most to me at this point. he's been trying for years now and came close in 2014/2015 and i would love for him to to have that record most wimbledon slams.

EDIT: no intention to argue. I don't think Roger Federer is the grass court even if he wins #8. I just don't believe in GOAT.

I agree with much of your comment, but Sampras is the all time great on Grass. Stacked era, grass was also a much more unique surface then. But don't fret Fed fanboys I DO have him No 1 US open all time.

Complete nonsense. Raonic was playing about as well as he possibly can with his limited ability. McEnroe coached him last year and said Milos played this match as well as he when he reached the final last year (and he should know). He was serving 72% in the first two sets and laying down 135 MPH bombs. But even old Fed is still the greatest ROS'er ever with huge servers, i.e. Sampras and Roddick.

I know for some Federer fans that is not case, as you rightfully pointed out. But there are some that are just obsessed with the slam record and keeping it out of the reach for his great rivals.

Yes, Sampras is an all time great on grass, and I actually prefer Pete to Roger personally. But I am going to go by most accomplished, and in that sense, with 8 Wimbledon titles, plus two finals, plus 9 Halle titles, plus longest winning streak on grass, I have to give it to Fed.
