I once had dinner at the home of The World's Most Pretentious Man, and he had what looked like a clear plexiglass manhole cover in his kitchen, allowing everyone to peer down the circular stairway into his little wine cellar. I certainly enjoy a good bottle of wine but I'd be embarassed to tell anyone if I was a collector, as every collector I've ever met is so insufferably full of himself that it's hard to imagine that they're not embarassed. This particular fellow, incidentally, had hints of oak, chocolate, and polystyrene, and yes, he was jammy.

I am curious to see if there are any wine aficionados or collectors on the TT forum.
Well, I drink the stuff once in awhile.
Preferably discount deals!
Trader Joe's has good deals sometimes!

But not getting into the snobbery of it!

We have long family history of being proud plebs, so who don't need any of that stuff!

Wife just spent a long weekend in Napa/Sonoma. She has connections with some of the buyers in Utah, so she got hooked up with owner led winery tours this weekend.

She also knows some of the local sommeliers, and they clue us in on $10-$30 bottles that are good values.

We keep a few bottles around of varying quality in our basement.

Not a collector...just a drinker :)

Favorites are Pinot Noir's from Willamette Valley.
Also like some Chardonay's with fish dishes and some
red Zinfindel with bbq.

What's the word? Thunderbird!
How's it sold? Good and cold!
What's the price? Thirty twice.
What's the reason? 'Grapes' are in season!

I used to be into the stuff, just because I get fascinated by hobbies or collections or activities that are intensive and full of facts and details. Wine's like that. So I used to buy a lot of different stuff.

Then I realized that it's so much more convenient to have a general grasp on good inexpensive wines. . . since they're so much easily available and there's a ton of good stuff at reasonable buckage.

I used to be like that with beer for a time after that. Now I know I just need, at minimum, access to Sammy Adams and Becks and I'm pretty good to go, although my favs are from Paulaner.

Agreed, never has the word grassy crossed my mind with this type of wine.

how else would you describe that taste? It's very unique to Sav Blanc's. It's like citrus/grapefruity taste that is distinct to that kind of wine. I have tried some of the most popular choices, including some from NZ but just wasn't my thing. However I do like regular Chardonnay.

I used to drink a lot of wine when I used to eat a lot of pricey restaurant meals. Wine without food is kind of pointless, IMO.

Now cocktails... they don't need food.

I like a nice glass of a sweet red with steak every now and then, we have local winery that has some pretty good stuff for 10 bucks. Now back to the beer thread you girly men;)

I have not drunk alcohol for a long long long time. 7 years ago,I went to a famous Italian restaurant in town and they served me a huuuge glass of red wine. Never had that much of wine before, usually just a few sips. When dinner finished, I started feeling funny and the ceiling was literally spinning around above me and I sort of giggle a bit because it felt funny and I felt as if I was going to float in the air.

That was the first and last time I have ever been drunk all my life.

Sounds like Bill Cosby was your waiter.

I would say citrus/grapefruity is a much better description.

I've never understood wine. The only time I ever use it is in sauces. To drink, well I don't like it. I can drink a glass of red before it's far too overpowering, and I just think white and sparkling is completely useless.

Sparkling burgundys are quite the treat in high summer and the almost recent vogue for rose was an eye-opener.

The pino grigio proved a nice change from sauvignon blanc.

My preference is for jammy, high alcohol reds in winter.

I love wine, and I love that there is so much variety and so many different styles. As much as I would love to drink expensive wines all the time, I get a bigger thrill out of finding great value at moderate prices.

Napa is a red wine lover's panacea; two longtime favorites are Franciscan and V Sattui - their Cabs are fantastic. Two newer (to me) are Del Dotto and Sequoia Groves, excellent Cabs, red blends and even Malbec; all are in the 14.5 - 15+ % alcohol percent. Tasty, dry and awesome!

I'm enjoying this one. It has the aroma of wild raspberry, Morello cherry and a hint of spices. The texture is velvety with silky tannins. The finish is well-balanced and elegant. The overall taste is as gorgeous as the bottle.

McLaren Vale, S.A, home of the Davey Brothers’ Shingleback Winery. Their grandfather started the business in the 1950s. Their Top Knot varietals are very affordable high quality wines. I buy their Shiraz for roughly $15/750ml. Very smooth fruity taste.

I had this a few weeks ago, really nice. Rich, savoury, cherry, toasted spice aroma on the nose, elegant and flowing mouthfeel. Fine grainy tannins, firm and persistent finish.

Fresh, intense Morello cherry, strawberry, supple, rustic, a hint of oak, long and complex finish. Probably a tiny bit of vanilla note and some sweet spices.
