Here are a couple of tips for Mary Carillo:

  1. In tennis, we say that groundstrokes have good depth, not good length.
  2. Schiavone's first name is Francesca, not Frankie.

I am sure that you are ready to take over her job now at the network.

I take Carillo any day over Chris Fowler.

Only problem I have with Carillo and McEnroe, etc., is that they don't shut up during match play and they talk about everything but the match at times.

Never mind the rankings, I said after AO, Li could well be the third best player in the world now (then), and she's proven it. Absent Serena, she's the real No 2 behind Kim.

Why do you always have to bring up Serena? She's not currently active and no one know who would win if they face off. Today's is Li's day, she just won the FO, so let's not focus on non-active player.

Li deserved to win this, very well played and kept her cool under pressure. Schiavone, proved her french open crown wasn't a fluke and silenced her critics. Great final for everyone concerned. Let's see if this inspires more asian players to play tennis.

That was one hell of a TB Li played after playing so well, then so poorly and letting Schiavone get into the match. I never believed she could win it. All the momentum had shifted Schiavone's way. Li was just hanging in there. If she had lost that tb, it would have been a 6-2 third set to Schiavone.

Bigger than Russia. With over a billion people the floodgates will open big time.
There's only 2 problems - 'ball' sports have never been big in China. Watch the ballkids at the China tour stop - pretty sad. Secondly they are a regimented, country first, people. Li Na is successful because she refused to toe the line - how many others will be brave enough to really follow her? I think they'll have some success, on the women's side, but nothing like Russia.

Now it's the Chinese men turn to find their way to the top. Li's win today should inspire them.

Agree. And she's not the best player in the World right now. She has been injured and has had 0 match play. Li Na has had some VERY close matches with Serena before and she's beaten her.

Li deserves this. Exceptional.

Williams sisters will be back on the tour very soon, Li would not have the same luck in the future.

Venus has not won a Grand Slam since 2008. I doubt she will ever win another.
Serena has been injured like Venus, and I HIGHLY doubt Serena or Venus will win Wimbledon with such little match play.

Li Na is going to be one of the favorites for Wimbledon for sure.

I understand your point, but despite that, with a population of over a billion, many others will be brave enough to follow you can bet on that. Just wait, and give it time, you will see.

:)

I mean how do Serena fans like it if she won Wimbledon and some posters keep on bringing up Graf's name, and then chaim she would pummeled Serena on grass.

I agree. Shut up about the Williams sisters! :)

I agree that Li Na will be one of the favorites, or even the top favorite for Wimbledon. Serena would have done great to reach the QF already, let alone win. I'm not holding any high hopes for her return.

Seems like Li, Sharapova and Bartoli will be among the favs.

You all shut up, respect my deep mourning. I blacked out all mirrors, assumed back robes, and sprinkled my hair with ashes.
Francesca fought herself, she had her chances. She was so gracious in her speech. And she will be back. (no matter again what Carrillo & Co. think).....

In what sense??????????The quality tennis came all from Schiavone.

Schiavone played poorly.
Li played poorly at times but she hit some AWESOME shots.
Schiavone played ok in Set 2 but half the battle was won because Li Na kept thumping shots out.

Li Na had an EXCEPTIONAL tournament.

It won't even be close.

Li Na is a known choker while Schiavone is the complete opposite of a choker. Best mental strength of any tennis player, WTA or ATP.

Imagine if Nadal had Schiavone's mental strength he would never have let Djoko into his head and would be owning him like before.

Schiavone takes this 6 - 0, 6 - 0.
LOOOOL

In reality the exact opposite should have happened. Li should have won this 6-1 6-1.

But she was generous today (more conservative than usual, probably afraid to create UE) and then she had a mini "situation" in the middle of the second set. But just in time she got back to her better form in the tiebreak

Congrats Na Li!

1st GS title for China and certainly not the last one...

Have you ever heared of 'table tennis'? There is this rumor that the Chinese are pretty good at it and that the sport is even popular there;-)

Love both players and would have been happy to see either win, but had a feeling Na would do it.

Even though I like Francesca, her clothes were horrible. She is, um, not the type for pink blousey sleeves and white ruffles. She needs a much more sleek and tailored look, like Sam Stosur's.

I like both girls. Today Li Na hit winners left and right, so fantastically. Congrats Li Na for her first Slam!

No question Li deserved the match.

yeah she deserved the title because she had taken out 4 of the top ten players:
kvitova (9), azarenka (4), sharapova (7), schiavone (5)

schiavone only took out jankovic (10)

You forgot what forum this was huh :(

Not to mention that on 6 Li's ball goes out (and my friend in France said they showed it many times) but it was given to Li, at that moment. Francesca lost her cool, and she unraveled.
Still I do not see the "greatness"of Li, she just pinned Fran back. If she won is b/c it was not Fran day (too many UE)...........
As for Lotto's outfit, sorry I bet you do not know much about fashion......
What's fashionable in Milan is not in LA..........

Congrads to Li! Imagine the amount of endorsements she'll be making in China! She'll be one rich tennis pro!

Any bets on Li Na becoming the greatest earning Female in World Sport?

Sharapova is on around $26,000,000 . .

Now surely Li Na could easily reach that? I just hope all the 'endorsements' don't take over from her winning another Slam!

Congratualtions to Li Na, or Na Li. :)

I like her game and she deserved it at the end. The perfect tie break.

And Schiavone had an amazing run also, glad that you got to win it last year, and put on such a great title defense this year.

Congrats to Li Na. It's a well-deserved win for her. Hopefully she can use this moment as a turning point in her career, make it more consistent & be a slam winner contender for the next few years.

Fran stopped a bit too short there, but she has played like a champion in these 2 weeks, so congrats! Too bad there can only be 1 winner.
