world number 2 Halep said she won't play US Open

She may be world no.2 and a slam winner, but she isn't a big enough name for TV schedulers to give a damn if she plays or not. Especially when Serena, the biggest name on the women's tour has confirmed she is playing. I don't even know what Venus is ranked these days, but she would still be a far bigger draw than Halep if she were to confirm playing.

Real lack of starpower on the women's side of the game now, especially with Sharapova's retirement. Aside from the Williams sisters, who really generates much attention now...maybe Naomi Osaka and Coco Gauff?

Maybe Roddick could make a return
A Roddick-Connors USO final would be big in the US.

Sensible decision.

Some people might not understand this, but relatively well-off people actually care about their health, and will do everything to protect it. Some like to act sensibly. In fact, I expect Nadal to announce the same.

but she still says she would play in Europe. Where is the logic?

but she still says she would play in Europe. Where is the logic?

I would imagine that that also wouldn't be unconditional. The way I see it, international travel increases the risk from catching it, so .... I wouldn't be surprised, if she actually only envisages playing the French, and I also think it is possible, that this time around she actually travels by car, thus absolutely minimising any contact with large groups of people. For AO 2021 I can even envisage the scenario where the top European and American players pool to hire charter flights only for themselves. Obviously people like Federer and Nadal will fly privately.

Halep is a hot-head, so I'm not surprised.
Why would any intelligent person decide in June?

I can assume that the logic is following:
- if you have to take a long flight, you are exposing yourself to a higher risk. Yes, sure, the filters in the airplane might be as good as in a surgery room, but if some of your neighbors have it, then the filters don't matter.
- if you have to take a short flight, you might as well drive from location A to location B

I know many people will say “who cares she wouldn’t draw much of a crowd” but this just shows that many top players will skip it. Many said the players talked the talk but wouldn’t follow through, here’s someone who said nothing during the negotiations but said sorry I’m out. I’m sure we are going to see many more follow suit.

I respect her position. America is a ****storm right now with Covid spiking in several states, hundreds of thousands dead and dying from it, unsafety with cops killing any person of colour, riots and protests all over the place. It’s essentially a third world country at this point. I’d stay the hell away for sure.
But it's really quieted down in New York. The US works more like a collection of smaller countries than one country. Skipping the USO because of spiking rates in Texas makes as much sense as skipping the French because of numbers rising in Greece

The protests will lose steam when people find something else to be distracted by, it won't take long. It's already happening in a lot of places

Halep can afford to fly privately to the US, or possibly pool with other European players

I think she's completely wrong caring about the ****in new cold that much but Halep definitely is a big enough name to asterisk the whole event. AO 2021 will be the next real slam, no matter which tournaments are being played until then.

Unless she wants to shell out over 150 000 USD I don't think she will fly privately. Whether she can afford it, I cannot say. She can pool with other European players, but it is difficult to make such a call with so little time remaining. They need to be in the USA less than 2 months from now, so they will need to decide now, and that will be difficult. AO 2021 is doable, because there is enough time until then. The situation in New York certainly is on her mind too, but I think the travel and terms of isolation itself is what bothers her more.

I'm not going to judge her. She's certainly set financially and she's gotten over the slam hump already.

If she wants to just play it safe this year, then why not?

Pretty much this. If she wants to play, great, if not, then great for her too to be able to make that decision and wait when it safe for her to come back to oversees travel part of the tour.

I think her decision has more to do with performance reasons. She knows the French is her best chance for another slam win, and playing a hardcourt tournament just before it on a different continent in a far away time zone is not ideal prep.

1) Travel to US - play. Not win. Return home without problems. Play RG with good chance to win. Travel: NO
2) Travel to US - play. Win. Return home without problems. Play RG with good chances to win. Travel: YES
3) Travel to US - play. Not win. Return home with problems. Not play RG. Travel: NO
4) Travel to US - play. Win. Return home with problems. Not play RG. Travel: MAYBE

The spikes elsewhere have to do with reopening, which NYC is in its first few days of the process. We will have to see their numbers in a few weeks before knowing if it’s a green light to proceed. They can begin the processes to host the tournament now but it will all be subject to review in July/August to determine viability to proceed.

She is a Dunderhead to be making a decision on an event 3 months away... Things can change in a few days, let alone months .

NYC population of 8 million.
There are only a few dozen daily covid deaths currently being reported...

Trending down... will have clearer
picture as lockdowns are relaxed.

But there is no conclusive evidence that September play in Paris will be any more or less safer than September play in NYC.

The wise move is for her to say nothing instead of making the premature drama queen announcement. Probably just looking for attention.

Please publish the calendar you consult that shows August is three months from now. With the necessary pre-practice quarantine, Halep needs to be in NYC in well less than two months, even earlier if she intended to play Cincinnati at Flushing.

Of course, as a professional athlete she knows less than the dunderhead that slams any decision he doesn’t agree with.

Well, I watch more Halep matches than Serena. So I am disappointed but at least she didn’t mark around and made a clear cut decision.

She should just say that she prefers not to play consecutive tournaments instead of creating all the drama and doubting USO safety. But still strange that a world #2 is not confident on hard court... There is no conclusive evidence that Paris will be any more or less safer in September than NYC.

NYC is taking extraordinary safety measures...Limit of only one or two persons per player which Djoker is complaining about. Presumably this means the French are allowing more? No fans in the stands...French might still be considering limited fans? If anything, NYC will likely be safer than playing in Paris.

every player will have their own opinion as to whether that will work for them. I'm pretty sure that won't work for Simona," Darren Cahill told Reuters in a telephone interview from Australia.
Some of proposals include charter flights to ferry players and limited entourages from Europe, South America and the Middle East to New York. Negative COVID-19 tests before traveling. Centralized housing, no locker room access on practice days and daily temperature checks, Stacey Allaster, the U.S. Tennis Association's chief executive for professional tennis, told The Associated Press in May.
French Director:
We are considering all the options. But we obviously prefer not to play behind closed doors. We want there to be fans there, fans who respect precautionary measures,” Vilotte said.

If you live in America then you don't have the problems involved in travel to, and quarantine in, one of the biggest centres of the pandemic.

From a health point of view, Halep's decision is wise even if the chances of contracting anything are very low.

Should I travel, risking to catch something, being troubled on every step of the process, getting to know the rules concerning a pandemic in a completely different culture and approach to things WHILE jeopardising my chances at the Major I have the best chances of winning, or should I chill where I am and focus on training and preparing for the said Major.

Very difficult choice, indeed.

France's deaths per capita are higher than America. In which French city was the epicenter over there? Paris?

And why are there not similar quarantining issues when flying into Paris? Are the French being reckless or is NYC being to restrictive?

NYC, with a population of 8 million, currently has less than 50 daily deaths. Doubtful that Paris is any better than that.
