Youtubers now getting racket endorsement deals and sponsorships

Every racket can be considered decent.
The question that needs to be quantified is.. to what acceptable standard...?

Just to make myself look even more peculiar, the algorithm just offered me the latest video from My Tennis HQ, and I remembered why I had unsubscribed. It was the way he says 'stroke'.

I like the TwoMinuteTennis guy’s videos. No frills just breaking down the game bit by bit to make it edible for the rec player like myself.

He is so annoying with his overly fake enthusiasm voice.
And no video is actually two minutes. Punch face

Not sure I’d say that about Tennis Spin where most reviews amount to saying,”Honestly, it’s a decent stick”!

To be fair, I think after initial review with the sales rep of the Yonex Vcore 95 ... I think he did say he wasn't a fan or had heard negative reviews about the change in beam width.

I think Ian is fine and works hard for his money. His target is the 3.0-4.0 player and in general he delivers a nice polished product. I like some of the matches he has put up and I think the whole MEP thing was good for his channel....but sometimes the material is too long.

I like Tennis Spin because his clips are generally short and gear oriented. I think Gu should do a guest match at Essential tennis to cross-promote both channels. These guys are out to make money and something like that would def generate views.

Karue is a great guy, levels above the cringy Ian and mark. I believe he’s targeting an advanced audience in terms of level of play, so maybe that’s why he’s less popular. Tennispin is a joke and that’s why people watch him.
Love the foot doctor, enthusiastic and honest

I think that Tech folks have been doing this for quite some time. It's a lot of work doing reviews and making videos and they can do comparisons that are difficult for others to do.

its shocking to see how far behind the tennis industry is in terms of social media/YouTube marketing. There are very few successful YouTube channels when compared to golf or boxing. I think this is a combination of poor competition in the space for tennis, but also a lack of vision from major tennis companies. The ATP and major racquet companies need to start facilitating growth online as old tennis players transition to pickleball and also death. Tennis needs to be brought into 2021 in terms of marketing and I'm glad to see Diadem and the well deserving Essential Tennis take a step towards this.
i would be even more surpised if a blogger/youtube poster with no tennis qualities but with a big mouth would get a big tennis sponsorship while an aspiring pro would not get osuch a deal. those bloggers are nothing but spoilt big brads who exspect to get everything for free just because they are so popular with the youth.

Maybe because I'm middle aged but I find this whole "social media influencers" thing abhorrent and these people getting racket sponsorships in preference to touring pros quite disgusting and depressing to be honest.
exactly my thoughts! Blogging will proved to be a hype. These spoilt young youtuber influencers are nothing but spoilt big brads.

That is the entire basis of celebrity endorsement.
Why do you think actors do commercials?
actors act in movies and in commercials. its the same. hoewever celebrities are only famous because they are so often in the centre of peoples attention, but they dont even have a talent to act Its just a snowball effect. More and more popularity because only of exposure.

This makes a lot more sense than ATP pros getting deals.
A Youtuber is about millions times more influential to the rec consumer than every unknown pro outside top 20.
Welcome to a new era ! Brilliantly played.

Anyone here use Diadem rackets ?

I have never seen that guy before in my life and why do people follow him?
It was really funny when he talked about how he painted over his discontinued racquets and why. Amazing.

Yes, when in public, they get recognized by people they do not know.
Youtubers are bigger celebrities than most obsolete movie and TV actors today.
I guess it's down to perception. I have no regard for YouTubers whatsoever and can't see it as a "proper job". A lot of them are probably little more than scam artists.

He has a fairly big coaching channel aimed at rec players on youtube. Could take two minutes to look at his channel and see that.

Is his content all that good? Eh......

I didn’t look at hit YouTube channel. I just played the video in the post. I don’t go to YouTube for coaching.

Well a lot of people do, and a decent number of them seem to like that channel.

I was just saying that it would take literally less than a minute and maybe 2 clicks to find out for yourself.

Mark S. just switched from the Radical and Black Knight to the Aero and Hyper G to alleviate forearm problems.
I do not understand the world any more.

He is a 4.5
He is in a totally different tennis world than the rest of us.

No difference from non-actors/directors like Roger and Ebert reviewing movies in the past. Move with the times.

Why? Many people in any industry will not appear on TV or social media with a branded product unless they are sponsored. They want to charge for their publicity. Many movie or short film producers will not show the name of a cafe in the scenes unless the owner extends them some benefits.

Apart from that, liability is also an issue. A popular figure shown having an accident using a branded product could be open to lawsuits by the manufacturer. So it is the standard practice in the industry.

This post is actually amazing. The amount of 'get off my lawn' and random sniping is just next level.

I guess it's down to perception. I have no regard for YouTubers whatsoever and can't see it as a "proper job". A lot of them are probably little more than scam artists.

On what planet are they scam artists? It's pretty basic. They make a thing. The thing gets watched by some number of people, and those eyesballs are worth money. It's literally the way most entertainment industries have operated for a century. TV ads, radio ads, magazine ads. Just because you don't like the content doesn't make them scam artists, because plenty of people do. They're not even taking money from the people watching them. They get their money directly from Youtube, one of the biggest companies in the world.

exactly my thoughts! Blogging will proved to be a hype. These spoilt young youtuber influencers are nothing but spoilt big brads.

Hahahaha. "Blogging" has been around for 20 years. It's literally just people writing or recording what they think. It's not going anywhere. And on your second point, sure, there are some examples of Twitch streamers and such that got rich too young and didn't know how to conduct themselves, but calling them all "spoilt" just reeks of "they didn't work for their money the way I think they should have". Most youtubers actually work ridiculous hours trying to produce their content. Whether or not you think their product has value is completely irrelevant. Plenty of viewers think it does, and therefore so do the giant companies that pay the bills.

My 78 year-old grandmother is about the level of most 4.0 youtubers.

The guy has a UTR of 9, which is algorithmically ranked. He's playing 4.5 tennis, which is also algorithmically ranked. And given his UTR, he's very close to a 5.0 by NTRP standards. Why would you even bother making a comment like that?

I never questioned his tennis. He is quite decent. I would not even argue the 5.0. His mental abilities, that is another story.
My comment was on 4.5 being an unachievable dream level of tennis, which is absolutely laughable.

Reading between the lines, I'm guessing that you - or someone close to you - is a YouTuber?

Nope, not at all. I watch some, that's about it.

I did legitimately laugh out loud at some of the comments though. Like, it couldn't be more stereotypically out of touch to claim youtubers don't deserve deals, that they're all spoiled, or a fad, or don't have "real jobs".

I'm 36, so I had social media, Youtube etc in my 20s. They make sense to me. What doesn't make sense to me is TikTok. It's a newer platform. It's full of teenagers, and I derive no enjoyment out of the stuff that is popular there. Honestly, it's kind of ridiculous to me. But in no way do I think that means it's not a real job, or that they don't work hard or deserve to be successful. I'm not judgemental enough to write off this thing that literally hundreds of millions of people enjoy. That's what you're doing when you dismiss youtube influencers. You're literally sitting there saying "well, these hundred million people don't know what they're talking about." It's ludicrous. Let people like what they like, and let people be rewarded for making content that brings other people joy.

It's certainly not unachievable, but it's not easy. I don't know what the percentage of rec players that are 4.5+ is, but it's gotta be super low.

Perhaps you're right and it's just a generational thing. Certainly most people my age I've spoken to about social media influencers think the same way I do... that it's a sad reflection on the world today and not "a real job". When children are asked what they want to do when they leave school and they answer "social media influencer"... Well, as I say, I'm in my 50s granted and genuinely find that ultra depressing.

It is no different from marketing and advertising positions in the past, except that you work for yourself. In the past, they would work for one fashion company on a fixed salary and you would have found that great. Now they can promote multiple fashion companies in their videos and actually use the products in their daily life, and you think it is not a real job. Completely illogical.

There's been a few horror stories of entitled 18 year old YouTubers demanding free hotel stays and the like. That sort of thing seriously hacks me off.

This is hilarious. I’m 64. I love YouTube. It’s new age TV and yes education with ads/commercials etc. Who can honestly say they haven’t had their curiosity piqued by an ad on TV and/or actually bought something they saw advertised on digital or print media. Literally no one. Some YouTubers are obvious salesman in their entire approach while others actually impart information or teach a variety of topics very well. As for “sponsorship” more power to them.

It is up to the hotel to refuse. As in every profession, there is a code of ethics in the influencing business. You are supposed to disclose whether a shoot was "paid" or not. You are not supposed to blackmail businesses into giving you free stuff in exchange for good reviews, nor should you let them bribe you. These are the same rules which food and travel critics have used for decades, except going incognito is very difficult these days. And just like food and hotel critics for magazines usually end up saying that everything was 95% good most of the time, same applies here. There will always be a mutual dependence between businesses and critics since both have to survive, and that cannot be helped.

When was the last time you saw a TW racket playtest report which called the racket crappy?

Kids wanting to be influencers is no different to the ones that used to want to be singers or actors or sportspeople. This isn't some new thing that represents the decline of society. It's exactly the same thing it's always been. People have always been attracted to the idea of fame, especially as kids, because it seems glamorous, lucrative, and easy. The reality of it is usually very different. Just like most actors don't make it, most influencers grind incredibly hard and never make a living. Sure, there are some entitled people trying to get free hotel rooms that they don't deserve, but entitlement isn't exclusive to that group. It's everywhere. Don't tar them all with the same brush, because the majority of people making Youtube content or whatever are just doing their thing.

There's a Japanese guy I've watched a lot of that just does woodworking videos. He never talks. He barely shows his face on camera. All he does is make cool furniture. Sometimes his dog appears and hangs out. His videos get millions of views. People find it soothing. For every idiot clamouring for free stuff, there's people like that.

I'd hazard a guess that almost none of the tennis Youtubers fall into the entitled category. You might not like a specific person's personality, like Ian from Essential Tennis, but the dude clearly cares about making people better at tennis. His channel is never going to get millions of views, and he has to know that. He's just out there trying to make a living doing the thing he loves. And him getting a few free racquets for saying the word Diadem on his channel is so not an issue. It's just a mutually beneficial relationship.

Coach Gu is a 12 UTR in singles and a 10 UTR in dubs... Rejeev Ram is listed as 15 UTR... You could tell how much more effortlessly Ram was playing while the others seemed like they were redlining a bit. lol

Racket is just a piece of graphite and tbh you can possibly play with any racket. Which one you buy is your personal preference. But technically Head, Yonex or Tecnifibre is no better than Wilson, Babolat or Dunlop. Of course the visible difference is QC, paintjob, grommets quality. But outside of this there are just different parameters.
For one person Pure Drive will feel awful and for the other itwill become the best stick. So why would anyone say the stick is crappy? Reviewers should focus on saying what is the feel, control, power, spin and for whom they think a racket is directed. They should also compare it to other racquets.

Harry’s content can often get cringey. However, it's normal to go above and beyond for friends. All of us do that.
