MY POLY REVIEWS

Excellent forehand!!!

I should change my forehand strokes and hit like you.
Thanks :) It's work in progress, some coaches say leave it as is, others want to tweak it a bit.

I started eastern with follow through over the shoulder and had my coach changed the grip to semi western/western. It creates much heavier ball

Me too.

I started with eastern grip and slowly changed to semi-western.

The hardest part is unlearning my eastern grip and getting used to semi-western.

I also changed my ohbh to 2hbh (been 3 years) and now my 2hbh is much better than my forehand.

I think I may have to travel up to flushing just to get on those courts with the playsight setup. Most of your experiences mirrior my own conclusions.
Tour bite soft is my baseline string but I test quite frequently. Current flavor of the week is tourbite/4g hybrid.
I've also got hyper g and black code 4s in queue. Seems like I'm partial to the square shaped string.
Keep the reviews coming.

Playsight is a really cool concept and definitely worth checking out. They have two courts equipped with it, call ahead of time to requst one - no extra charge. Stats are great, you keep the video to review it in slow motion. Also you will quickly find out if you really serve 130mph lol

Solinco makes some great strings but I just can't get used to the boardy response of TB. I tried TB soft briefly and its like hitting with the same frying pan but with a foam cover. Great performance - crappy feel, but a lot of people do not mind that at all.

I have Solinco Outlast 18g in my prestige MP as of now and I am really enjoying it. Will post it up after another hitting session.

Quick question about 4g - do you string it yourself?

I don't like Tour Bite Soft off the stringer, but for hours 2-4 it is awesome. I can't find any other string that, at least initially, feels and sounds and performs so good. From there though, it suffers just like any other poly and after 6-7 hours becomes a launching pad.

What facility is this in Flushing? I'll def hit it up at some point. As for the 130 MPH serve...well...doesn't everyone hit it that hard?

I do indeed. Do you string for yourself? Nothing in my mind pings me about 4G being a difficult string job. It does kink a little easier than most polys, but it's a minor nuisance.
I strung it once and it doesnt stretch at all, seems difficult to get accurate tension?

Billie Jean King tennis center. Not the cheapest (still less than some Manhattan or Long Island clubs). Go check it out.

It turns out they don't! (Here a mindblown sound effect)

It is not easy to go past 120mph, technique must be solid, height doesnt hurt either.

Can you comment on the tension maintenance on the solinco and how it plays relative to rpm?

Thanks
everything is better with tourbite soft than RPM. RPM may have little more power. and tension maintenance might be a little better with RPM. but then I cut all my strings out after 6 hours of play if it doesn't break first so I can't comment on longevity of the string.

People at Solinco know how to make a mean string. I have been eager to put my hands on the Outlast 18 for a while. No disappointment here. It has a firm feel but not boardy. No issues with comfort at all. Wrist, elbow and shoulder still in one piece. I liked the Revolution 18 a bit more because of better ball bite and higher launch angle. But generally it is a fantastic poly that I could come back to any day.

Signum Pro Poly Megaforce 19... this string has been on the market for a while now, I bought it because I can get a reel of this stuff for less than $40 in Europe, plus it has great reviews on TW. It is quite firm (perhaps a bit too firm for my preference) but still pockets the ball alright when swinging big and fast. It plays like a firmer WeissCannon Silverstring.

They claim on the package that it has unparalleled tension maintenance. Turns out it is actually quite paralleled :D. It died promptly after 6-7hrs and there was no question that it was dead. It lost all the pop and control. I tried to hit a bunch of slices cross court they went flying up in the middle of the court... I didn't mind that - at least I didn't have to wonder if it is still playable.

My list of strings got adjusted a bit by TW playtest of Laserfibre Vorso 16g (1.28) that just arrived in the mail. Will string this mean looking string and will report soon.

Powerful poly mains?

What is the most powerful poly mains have you tried?

Thank you..
I rarely use hybrids. Have most experience with full beds of poly (some limited poly/poly hybrids)

With that said some of the most powerful polys I have tried are:

1. Polystar Energy
2. Genesis Black Magic
3. Pro Supex Big Ace
4. Volkl Cyclone Tour (string low)

Adding Laserfibre Vorso to the table, part of the TW playtest:

Put in 9hrs of solid play with this string, here we go:

Gauge received - 16g

Tension(s) used for playtest - 50lbs

Regular string set up - WeissCannon Silverstring 1.20 53lbs or Solinco Revolution 18g 55/53/lbs

Racquet brand and model used for test - Head Graphene Prestige Pro

Power of test string - power was above average, as expected it increased a bit as it lost tension but balls didn't sail long which I liked.

Feel - Soft on contact with nice pocketing on big swings. Good touch for poly on drop shots and short slices.

Spin - well above average in terms of spin and stayed this way throughout its life. Balls dived down the court on heavy topspin shots, kick serves jumped around very nicely too. Texture wore down after about 4-5 hrs in the sweetspot area but spin was still adequate.

Comfort - Very soft impact for a poly. No issues in comfort at all.

Durability - Mains cut through crosses more than halfway by the end of the 9hr. I think it would snap within 10-12 hrs for sure. I cut out all my poly before 10hr mark if they don't break. Typical for poly, no complaints here.

Playability Duration - Once again very typical, predictable polyester behavior. I strung it at 50 lbs, It lost 7 lbs of tension in the first 2 hrs of solid topspin rallying, another 2 lbs in following 2hrs then it settled and lost only 0.5lbs in next 2 hrs. For the first 5-6 hours it played nearly the same, the power level increased a bit but not to the point where I needed to adjust my strokes very much- spin was still very good and brought the ball down the court nicely. It started dying and losing feel noticeably after about 8hrs which is great for poly in my experience.

Control - Great control, I was very confident with this string and going for all my shots. To my surprise even with initial tension loss control did not suffer as much as with many other soft polys available on the market. I hit some great angles with this string and ball went exactly where I intended it to.

Compare to the string you use most often - Silverstring is a bit more predictable, plays a more muted, is probably equal in control and playability duration, but I like the way it feels more than the Lasrerfibre. Solinco Revolution (18g) wins in spin and control. I would say this plays similar to Revolution in thicker gauge.

Tension recommendations - I would keep tension at 50lbs. I really liked how this string behaved throughout its life, very predictable response for a poly.

List any additional thoughts - This is a string that does everything right. It has a twisted texture and provides more than enough spin without "overgrabbing" the ball like some squared strings with sharp edges. If you are a polyester player that likes soft and predictable response you will not be disappointed with LaserFibre Vorso. I typically lean towards 17l or 18g strings but I was actually very happy with this 16g (1.28mm), I can see myself using this in the future.

BA is not a new string. Some people on this forum swear that Pro Supex doesn't make strings, only rebrands them and that Signum Pro Poly Deluxe is the same as Big Ace. You can get a reel of SPPD for $37 in Europe!
Care to share where SPPD can be had for $37 please?

Great thread by the way. Did you manage to try Big Ace or Revolution 18G in the YTPP?

I buy strings in Poland. Two major online retailers there have it for less than $40 per reel ( along with some other German made strings for fraction of their US prices ) they ship everywhere in Europe. I can send you direct link in private message if you like.

Unfortunately not, I have a bunch of single sets, therefore no opportunity to try them out in different frames. I typically try 1.20mm and less in 18x20 sticks, anything higher I put in my Prestige Pros now. I have another set of Big Ace, I will try it again at some point before I decide to invest in reels.

Sounds good. I recently bought a 2nd hand YTPP (already strung with Alu Power at 53lb) and really enjoyed my first hit-out with it last night. It was surprising powerful, had great spin potential, sweet on the BH slice (couldn't get it quite hooked up on topspin OHBH), great at the net and serves. Feel was decent - would have liked a plusher feel - may be down to string choice/tension. So I'm on the lookout for a suitable string/tension combo.

Youtek prestige is one of the crispiest racquets out there and it is super solid. If you want something more plush/muted try Youtek IG prestige pro or even better - the IG MP. Both perform very well with the Pro having more Uuumpph to it. If you stick with the youtek version try more muted strings such as Yonex Poly Tour Pro or Wilson Revolve.

Just added Solinco Revolution 18 as 2nd place on the list. Out of the firm textured poly this one is definitely my favorite.

I'm thinking of trying the 16g Solnico Revolution in my Pure Aero, since it has such an open pattern.
Any thoughts, comments or other recommendations would be appreciated.
Thanks, Paul

It depends on what you are looking for in your setup and what your preference is in terms of feel. If you dont mind low power, firm response Kirschbaum Max Power is really nice, also a bit more muted but with great spin Black Shark - it plays very well in this frame. If you are looking for more comfort/power look into Ytex Quadrotwist or the Revolution (strung low) Pure Aero is a quite powerful stick, and with the 16x19 you definitely want to stick with 16g.

Thanks. Oddly, in 2016, I'm very new to poly :) ... (Played a 12.2 ounce PGRadPro with all gut for quite a while). When you specify strung low, do you mean in the 50 area or much lower?

To amplify, I'm now playing with a 2013 APD. I only tried this stick because the frame I wanted to demo a couple of years ago was out of the shop and took it just for fun. Turned out the 2013 APD vastly improved every part of game. I've had a couple of great hitting sessions with the Pure Aero and feel like it’s worth buying because of trade in possibilities with TW.

Since you played with full gut, poly at any tension will still be low powered for you I think. Start at 50/48 and see how it feels, you can go as low as 40 or to the point you feel control is compromised.

I have used both APD 2013 and Pure Aero, they're generally very similar. Pure Aero swung more solid. Not for my game, I came back to my Prestiges modified a bit to over 12oz and I think I will stick to that.

If you're new to poly I suggest trying a variety of vastly different strings and seeing what works for your game:

1. Revolution
2. Black Shark
3. Silverstring
4. Max Power
5. Big Ace
6. 4g
7. Tour Bite
8. BIg Hitter black 7
9. Diadem Solstice
10. Cyberblue
11. signum pro poly plasma

Thats a good start right there, you might find a winner in one of those, if not, there are plenty of simiar offerings to every string above

For the past two years I've been getting my APDs strung at R.P.N.Y., with their proprietary strings. I just switched to their black poly in one of my frames. R.P.N,Y. describes this string as being somewhat similar to rpm blast, but with less spin and more suited for a variety of shots. (Strung at 50). I've been liking that a lot. It's also the string they had in their Pure Aero demo, which I loved. I really like the added spin I got and felt like I could take huge swings, keeping the ball in play and creating huge angles and pace (for me :) ) with my forehand and one hand backhand. My other frame (and at one time both frames) has that same poly in the mains and their version of a Biphase X-1 in the crosses.
I don't have a western grip or windshield wiper stroke but having that access to more spin has been great.
As a lefty, the spin on my serve as well as the placement gets me a lot of free points and ploys help that as well. The pace seems to be the same.
Again, thanks for the above list!

Just looked up R.P.N.Y, I have not heard of them and never used their products. Very limited information online. If they work for you, keep using it :) on the other hand if you're curious about what's out there you could get a bunch of different strings and perhaps find something that really resonates with you.

it goes without saying that stringing for yourself makes this a lot easier...

Seems such a waste to cut out the Alu Power that was already in my YTPP but I fear it may cause me elbow issues if I don't. I've tried Poly Tour Pro previously in a Wilson 6.1 but thought the feel was too muted. I'll keep that up my sleeve though.

I'm going to try Tourna Black Zone 1.25 at 52lb next week. It's been my go-to string on a number of racquets so I'll give it a try to get a base line setting to work from.

You got the racquet used, so assume that Alu has some miles on it, it is more than likely ready to be cut out by now. Take a racquet with fresh Alu and one that has 15hrs on it and hit them side by side - you will see a bug difference.
I tried black zone once in a 6.1 16x18 at 50lbs it seemed to powerful in that racquet, but it is a nice string

You guys ever ask yourself why you keep switching Poly's and are in constant search for the right answer?

Did you ever wonder why the Pros use a new set after every match if not every set?

Maybe it's because Poly degrades so rapidly that it's not really meant to be used for more than a week or two .....but probably much less?

You are absolutely right. If you hit hard and play against someone that hits equally hard, poly is gone in a matter of hours (if you don't hit fast long strokes you shoudn't be using poly anyway)
I keep trying new polys because it is fun and out of pure curiosity.
I wouldn't do that if I couldn't string for myself.

May I suggest you string Alu Power at 48? After you hit with it, you'll forget about all other strings.;)
I keep hearing that! I tried Lux Ace 18 which I liked and Timo which died in 2hrs. Also some gut/alu hybrids but never full bed of alu power. Will try it soon at your suggested 48lbs thanks!

Excellent thread with great reviews @Mareqnyc really loved your input. After looking at the video of you hitting, your FH looks remarkably similar to this Czech guy I hit with back in college in 2005. Name was Marek Velicka. Solid hitter. Our varsity team wasnt as good as it is these days but we were decent enough. Anyhow, great job once again.

P.S: didn't see your thoughts on Weisscannon Black 5 Edge, one of my favorite strings (apologies if I missed it). Would love to hear what you think.

Thanks :) just sharing my experience with the tennis world! That forehand is still work in progress, but change is not easy and takes time...

I tried 5 black edge few years ago that's why I didn't put it on the list here, I dont have another set to playtest it again. I remember it being quite low powered, somewhat crispier version of Kirschbaum Black Shark.

I have to admit that these two new polys red ghost and Ultra cable is pretty good poly. I had my doubts about Weisscannon. but these two poly are very good. Ultracable is something I could switch to if it came in thinner gauge.

One of my colleagues just had his Radical strung with Red Ghost and he loves it. You can try that if you want a thinner guage and are looking for spin. Raving reviews from everyone I know who uses it, so far. I might try it too. As for having doubts, not sure why you would have doubts about Weiscannon? They are pretty decent and I find they make good quality strings. Just my two cents.
