Laver Cup was a success and will become an important tournament

The biggest reason for this is how much the players cared. Did you see Federer's and Nadal's reactions during the matches and after the final match? Isner playing one of his best matches of his career to defeat Nadal? Kyrgios' tears after losing the championship point?

If the players feel it, the fans will too. Before the Laver Cup, I was certain that this going to be just another exhibition thing. But boy was I positively surprised!

What are your takeaways from the tournament?

Here are highlights of the epic final match:

The Laver Cup will become tennis' version of the Ryder Cup from golf. It's a different kind of pressure to the majors too, the sort that Colin Montgomerie thrived in and the sort that Tiger Woods didn't like. In future, we might see guys like Murray, Djokovic, Wawrinka, Nishikori, del Potro, Raonic as well.

Seems to me like a great exho, but an exho nonetheless. Very entertaining, but I still think it's a long way away from being a measurement of tennis success, like the Davis Cup and Olympics have come to be.

Laver cup will only be become like rider cup.................IF they give every player on winning team 1000 ATP tour points, even the backup player should get the points. and also replica of Laver cup, small version that is made of PURE gold, that costs like $100,000 each...... Then Laver cup will have Legitimacy

(mostly copy paste from the tourney thread) I think Fed's speech afterwards was rather revealing and important.

The event itself and the matches were pretty good, but obivously almost all of the spotlight was on Fedal, can you picture this event without them? The answer is yes, but there won't be much hype as this one, hence ultimately the tournament may just look like a cash grab event in the middle of the season (or maybe this was the cash grab because of Fedal).

However Fed said it's a stage where the legends of the game can show their faces and get involved, suggesting the Senior's tour and all is not enough. Not just Laver, but I guess this was somewhat cool for Borg and JMac too. So, okay. I guess.

I agree. It turned out to be a great success and will bring a lot of attention in the future. The fact that Kyrgios cried and Fed celebrated as if he has just won Wimbledon speak volume.

I think that the third day was good for the tournament: it got very close and then you could clearly see that the players wanted to win. That brought the crowd into it, which is exactly what the organizers wanted to see.

Where did I say it would become an important tournament in the ATP?
Not sure but for all the Effort these players put into the tournament,,,,, they should get 1000 ATP tour points Each for the winning team. and 250 ATP tour points for losing team members.......... I will call ATP president and tell him to make it so...........

That’s why Federer needs to stay after he no longer plays to keep to original purpose of this event. The Laver Cup is in good hands because Roger knows how much it means to Rod Laver. Emotional investment is good.

Correct. With the exception of the Slams, the ATP no longer awards ranking points for non-ATP events.

oh okay ty. so in that case it is very similar to davis cup without the patriotic/nationalism thing going on which i actually like better about the laver cup

It does seem to be structured very like the Davis Cup with the exception of the points system, best of 3 sets and super tie-breaks (all matches in Davis Cup are best of 5 sets and there are no super tie-breaks, only ordinary ones).

Yeah cause you know, Top 10, or even the Top 20 in the world plays in those Davis Cup match on a non-Olympic year right?

The entry system prevents it from being a real tournament, like the olympics. You cannot choose certain players then award points, its unfair to the rest of the tour

yeah a shortened form which is good so its not as taxing plus like i said the main draw for me is seeing rivals on the same team and players from different countries cheering each other on. obviously team world somewhat flopped there since most of them were from USA but if they can diversify it i think we have a good tournament

I thoroughly enjoyed the format, the comraderie of a team approach, and the way it all finished. Seeing Fed and Nadal team for doubles. Watching the world team gamely come back on the third day.

These are the things that make Ryder Cup so great. Stars teaming up to take on other stars. Nail biting one on ones on the final day. Team mates cheering you on. Crowds into it.

I hope it becomes a success. It's a nice change up from typical tournaments.

Overall I think it was a great success. I like many other fans went into this thinking this was going to be a glorified exhibition, but after seeing how emotionally invested pretty much all the players and coaches were along with the crowd, and the quality of matches in general, I now have respect for the event and will look forward to it's next iteration. This year might be great, still I think that the event needs big names again next year to ensure it's survival for the years to come as well as to add "prestige" to the event. Let's not kid ourselves here, a lot of the interest and enthusiasm for the event was due to the fact that Federer/Nadal were there, and who knows if they will still be active players in 2-3 years? I think the point formula used by the event is interesting, raising the stakes everyday which makes the final day more interesting and suspenseful.

What I'll remember the event for :
  • The Fedal bromance. Seeing Fed/Nadal playing doubles together, doing the press conferences together and always talking with each other, having fun during matches was a real treat. I mean who will forget Rafa jumping in Fed's arm after the last match today? Great moment...I don't think any sane tennis fan can ignore/dislike this. Sure they both have their own very dedicated/hardcore fan base, but at the end of the day, the fans who only seek to bash the other fan base should realize that if these 2 can be friends and respect each other even if they are rivals, then so can they. At the end of the day, they are both ATG/GOAT.
  • Kyrgios gave a great effort and actually cared about the event, was emotionally invested.
  • JMac as captain for team "World" was good. You may or may not like his opinion at times or the way he commentates matches, still he brings a great presence.
  • Berdych looked so uninterested. I wonder why Dimitrov wasn't there instead of him?

Totally agree, it was awesome, and the seriousness and passion that players had was a pleasant surprise and made the tournament.

I wonder if the selection of players was more thought out than you'd think, like ingredients in a cake. Murravic would have ruined it.

The ATP shouldn't be the whole of pro tennis anyway. Competition is the lifeblood of any successful endeavour, without it tennis (and anything) will stagnate.
Now they have to compete with something new. Where is World Team Tennis these days? Let's spice things up.

Pity the effort here wasn't spent on rescheduling and developing DC. DC probably needs to be reduced further which is annoying but reality. It needs money injection as it's obvious that players like Federer are motivated beyond anything else.
DC needs to survive and is realistically the only nationalised competition. Hopman Cup tries for entertainment purposes and does succeed to a degree, it's still alive where DC is on life support.
