Jolly's Polys

Not to be confused with Jolly's Angels (Kate Beckinsale, Margot Robbie, and Brittany Snow) this special agent selection process will put to the test a multitude of strings which through a rigorous trial in hostile conditions will weed out the weak and ineffective leaving only the best of the best to be included in the ranks of Jolly's Polys.

Jolly's Polys:

Luxilon ALU (rough and smooth)
Luxilon Big Banger Original
Babolat Ballistic Polymomo

Just dropped off a bunch of frames to be strung up for the spring. Excited to get started.

Holy guacomole batman!!!! That's a lot of racquets....are you sponsored or something? Let me know if you'd like to sell a couple...

dang..how does one run out of 16 racquets? Do you smash them all the time? Or just dont bother restringing when string breaks for long periods and keep switching to next one till you run out of racquets?
You wear racquets out just by playing a lot, well, and by stringing.

And I thought stringing weekly was expensive... you just pick up a new stick every time...

Surely 16 (plus a few more) is a tad too much though...you take care of racquets and they last a while....but hey not gonna judge in fact Im envious... If I could afford it, I'd buy one new one everytime i scratched one of mine too...

Coming back to topic, what are some other strings besides rs lyon you will string up jolly?

The reds will go on ig, and they are slightly thicker, so the clears should easily fit graphene.

Gotchya. Thanks. Was just curious as I had a terrible time with XT grommets which I was trying to put in two of my Microgels. A couple of drilled holes on both frames were much smaller than the barrels and I didn't want to perform surgery on racquets. Ended up buying original MG ones of fleabay for double the price. Those fit like a charm.

I see that Graphene and Graphene XT are interchangeable so thats interesting.

I don't know, I do playtesting for a couple of companies and anything else that piques my curiosity.

I used up 8 reels of Andy Roddick's left over polymono and only have so much Luxilon in store so will probably need to find something that works for me if the Jolly Rig II becomes too expensive.

I dunno, I went through 17 n90s and 24 k90s the BLXs wore out instantly. So I am pretty good at wearing stuff out. These are showing their age but holding up pretty well overall.

I know you're not a fan of Solinco strings you had tried previously but have you played Hyper G? A thicker gauge MIGHT last you longer than an hour. What about Genesis Typhoon? It's been a long time since I've played with it, but it reminded me somewhat of ALU Spin; again, not the same (nothing is) but you might find it decent enough to be a cheaper option.

I don't like tour bite. Don't like is a very mild description of my feelings.

However there was one I tried, diamond something, that I got a prototype of from Solinco and it wasn't a bad string at all.

I will put in a request for a set of hyper g.

It’s tour bite diamond cut. Tour bite textured like alu rough.

You must've tried Tour Bite Diamond Rough. I find it interesting that you liked that string, considering that I found it to have no bite whatsoever. I even have a nice discount deal with Solinco and I couldn't personally recommend Diamond Rough. I used it in my old Prestige and felt like I could generate more spin with tournament nylon.

Yea, it was like a pale imitation of ALU. It didn't have the bite but it had a softer feel and a little jump off the stringbed. I might have tried it as a cross with BBO mains which would explain why I didn't feel the lack of bite which I did with normal tour bite.

It was a long time and many beers ago so it's a bit hazy, but the moral of the story is that I'm not prejudiced against Solinco.

In terms of pure bite, the best Solinco string might be Outlast, their round, red poly. It's slick and I think grabs the ball quite well. I've strung it for players of all skill levels and the ones that like it the most are those who already generate a ton of RHS. The 4.5 and 5.0 players I string for seem torn between Outlast and Hyper G for the most part. Almost no one uses any of the other Solinco strings, at least no one that I string for.

Also, have you considered a thicker gauge, basic poly like Gosen Polylon? It's obviously not in the same realm as something like ALU or BBO, but it also is so cheap that if you're breaking strings incredibly regularly it might not matter much.

Yea, I tried a bunch of stuff I think the Unique Tourna poly is the same thing and was pretty good.

What exactly does happen for you when you "wear out" a racquet? I'm assuming this is based on feeling and not physical breakdown after a while. For the record I know about the theory of the graphite wearing our due to repeated stress on the carbon/epoxy matrix but I've never been able to actually detect it. Some of the oldest frames I've used play the best.

That's what happened to my K90s.

The white BLXs weren't as lucky. They caved in the heads, shattered the throats, everything you could imagine and they were strung with poly at 58#.

Some pretty insane breakage there.... I've never seen that kind of destruction, even in my few years working as a stringer, except on frames that were abused. How often did you string? How have you found the GPMP compares in durability?

Anyways back to the string topic - when did you switch to using full poly exclusively? I am currently right on the boundary of switching to it, but I still don't break my current setup fast enough to justify the stringing cost of repeatedly restringing unbroken but dead poly. In my part of Switzerland the labour charge is CHF 30.- or roughly $32 US.

The Kevlar/poly hybrid lasted 3-5 hours if I recall, I'd go through a few every week. When all of my K90s broke (I think I went through 24 of them) I switched to the new (at that time) blx which turned out to be complete trash. The white BLXs caved in around the third stringjob and I realized that the Kevlar was breaking the frames so I switched back to full poly at a much lower tension but the frames still broke in a year.

The GPMP is holding up pretty well, some have cracks in the throat and around the bridge but they play ok. Stringing with full poly at 50# now.

When I came back to playing I started with basic synthetic, then switched to multifiliment for better playability, then that broke too quickly so I used a poly ribbon string, then that broke too quickly so I switched to a poly/multi blend then that broke too quickly so I switched to full poly then that broke too quickly so I tried a bunch of cheap and/or durable strings before settling on the Kevlar/Poly blend, then that broke all my racquets.

What racquet breaks with kev/ poly? Certainly all
My sticks would be broken

Is it some soft players frame like some radical head deal. Head is the only racquet I havent tortured with kev/poly at crazy tensions. Must be some noodle.

I'm surprised the GPMP is better durability wise than the Wilsons. I've heard so many horror stories of those frames snapping in half on the machines.
