In this age of weak ATP, all it will take to surpass Roger is for one dominate player to come along. Men's tennis is weak due to one person and that is Tiger Woods. When he took the golf world by storm in '97, fathers started removing their sons from tennis to golf to create the next Tiger. Prior to Tiger, tennis was the 5th most popular sport in America behind Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Boxing. Now the ATP ranks below Hockey, Soccer, and NASCAR. It was behind Golf when Tiger was relevant. A decline in popularity in American tennis translates into a decline in talented individuals playing tennis, thus resulting in a decline in quality ATP players. So when the next Sampras or Federer comes along then records will fall.
