I mean truly safe from Nadal? Djokovic is out of race now. So if Nadal fails, his record going to stand for a decade at least (might stand for many decades to come). But Toni just declared their intention to fight for record till the end. As far as Nadal remains lock for FO, I don't see it being unrealistic goal.

How many Slams in your opinion Federer needs to get so there will be no threat of Nadal equalling/surpassing it? Vote.

I say 23.
In this age of weak ATP, all it will take to surpass Roger is for one dominate player to come along. Men's tennis is weak due to one person and that is Tiger Woods. When he took the golf world by storm in '97, fathers started removing their sons from tennis to golf to create the next Tiger. Prior to Tiger, tennis was the 5th most popular sport in America behind Football, Baseball, Basketball, and Boxing. Now the ATP ranks below Hockey, Soccer, and NASCAR. It was behind Golf when Tiger was relevant. A decline in popularity in American tennis translates into a decline in talented individuals playing tennis, thus resulting in a decline in quality ATP players. So when the next Sampras or Federer comes along then records will fall.

He's a clay GOAT without a doubt.

An overall GOAT you have to factor everything.
* Number of Major Titles won
* Overall performance at Grand Slam Events
* Player Ranking
* Performance at ATP/WTA events
* Performance(Win/loss record) at Davis & Fed Cup events
* Records held or broken(i.e. Consecutive winning streaks)
* Intangibles(Overall contribution to tennis)

Nadal still won’t be GOAT even if he gets 25 to Fed’s 20.

The vast majority of them will be FOs
Don’t know about GOAT, as it is difficult to compare between eras, but he sure as hell would be greater than Federer. Let’s not kid ourselves, no player is considered greater than another player from the same generation with 5 more slams.

Completely incorrect. He’s worse than Federer at everything except playing on clay

Please name me some other instance where one player is considered greater than another despite being 5 slams behind. Not to mention that Nadal has the lead in masters,H2H, and in your hypothetical scenario most likely would have caught up in other metrics as well.

Please tell me how a player who’s won 12/18 slams on the same surface and 0 WTFs is greater than someone who’s won 8/20 on his best surface.

It’s asinine.

15/21 still won’t make Nadal goat. Every time he wins another FO without winning off clay, it actually hurts his chances. He’s the clay GOAT. That’s all he’ll be.

I don't really count nadal has the same gen although I can see why some do since he peaked early

I too think that slam distribution is somewhat important but not to the degree that it can make up for a 5 slam deficit. Sorry but this is ridiculous, following this logic one might as well argue Agassi > Sampras. Moreover, if Nadal would get to 25 (which he never will btw) it is impossible that he will do so only by winning French Opens. Even Nadal cannot win until 40, so at the very least he would win two more titles at other slams.

He won his first slam only two years after Fed. Nadal being an early bloomer combined with Fed’s out of this world longevity, makes them pretty much being from the same generation.

I'd think 24 at least to make it safe. Only now this is on the basis that he wins 4 in the next two years without Rafa and Novak not winning any. At 35 and 34 they would both likely succumb to injury due to the nature of their game. This is the only scenario that protects the record and it's not going to happen. There's a good chance at least 1 player surpasses the record in 2021.

Rafa especially now will manage his schedule even more so to ensure his 100% ready for the slams.

Unfortunately Federer has left no option but play till 2021 end. Keep trying and see whether you can pick one or two. Better than retiring and hopelessly witnessing his records getting surpassed.

Fed may lose the grand slam number race, but I'd doubt he'd be forgotten 50 years from now as a "fraud" much as the poor sportsmanship sentiment wants to make it so. Just like Sampras hasn't been forgotten.

Best case scenario for Fed now - play till 2021 Wimbledon at least. Win 2-3 Slams out of 4 opportunities. Unfortunately still won't be a safe record.

Fed has no chances to add one slam more.
Nadal and Djokovic will surpass him, and it’s Federer’s fault.

Otha, why is it Federer's fault? You're only as good as you can be. Djokovic is a better player but that's hardly Federer's fault.

No he’s not. He’s a human backboard - what a disgrace and shame if Novak Djokovic is the best player ever.

Also, he won’t pass Fed’s slam count.

You're greatly simplifying Djokovic's game but in any case, why is it such a shame seeing how he beats the other 2 GOATs on a regular basis? :)

Djokovic is like a time-bomb with no warning.
He looks completely healthy at Wimbledon and then his body fall apart by the 3rd or 4th Round of USO.
Very unpredictable :)

Djoker seems to have more problems solving Stan in best of 5 than Federer does. Why do you think Djokovic struggles so much?

How do you figure? Djokovic has been winning slams at a remarkable pace. You'd have to be a brave man to bet against it.

I am a brave man. Don’t care at this point if I lose this particular bet - I just believe (and hope) that a man such as Novak Djokovic shall not surpass Federer, the GOAT.

Well it's simple. Federer/Nadal have a game that does not do much against Djokovic, a match-up as they call it. Likewise Djokovic's game does nothing against Stan so he is able to consistently beat Djokovic. Luckily for Djokovic, Wawrinka took ages to get his mental act together. If Wawrinka is anywhere close to his best, he will beat Djokovic consistently.

Good point, agreed! :)

Don't agree with Sudaca on this that it's Federer's fault. Federer is more vulnerable at this stage of his career and the fact that, two guys are right behind him trying to catch him makes him even more vulnerable. So it's likely that he'll collapse at crucial moments.
