Who gets the title?

I mean the crowd is not that bad. The one in front (The expensive one) is empty tho but the rest is not that bad.

China's crowd is growing and they heavily invested in WTA, so makes sense if it played there instead of Singapore.

Naomi Osaka has withdrawn from the WTA Finals with a shoulder injury. Bertens gets in as an alternate and will play Barty tonight.

Wasn’t expecting that.

Quite lucky for Barty who lost to Osaka in Beijing but dominates the Bertens H2H 5-0 with 3 wins coming this year (all went 3 sets though).

I saw the doubles on TV and plenty of fans in the seats! Not that way in the U.S. ladies doubles matches. Maybe the price is cheaper for doubles then singles? Anyways WTA Tour is popular with the Chinese public!

Andreescu mentioned she wasn’t sure about the injury she got against Halep so Kenin could potentially make her WTA finals debut now that Osaka is out and Bertens is in.

this is terrible. bertens gonna get naomi points now?
People on twitter saying alternates don’t get points which is something I didn’t know about, she will get the prize money though. Very nice for her. I think it’s crazy she doesn’t get points because in theory she could still win the title as she could be top 2 in the group with two matches to play and could win both and make the SF. Weird.

But still nothing like the crowds an event such as this should get.
They would be better staging it in Europe, or at a push, America although harder to sell with no Serena Williams, but then maybe she'd play/have some kind of incentive.

I know, but like I said it's a process which might pay dividend. We saw a little bit incremental crowd in Wuhan and Beijing if we compare year on year and this year we didn't even have Wang Qiang on SF.
Europe is declining. French Open crowd worsen year after year.

Weekdays crowd is tragic, I love Shenzhen but really this might also taken into account of what's happening in Hong kong at the moment.
I would not going into Hong Kong for holiday at this time.

She will not having the points.

Naomi withdrew kinda makes the competition is less interesting for me now.

She gets points but they compete against her Elite Trophy points. If she gets more points in Shenzhen then those points will count to her total but not both.

She got 440 points with her 2 Round Robin wins and being the runner up in Zhuhai .

In Shenzhen, you get 250 points per RR win in Shenzhen so if she wins both she'd get 500 points. If she make the final but loses she'd get another 330 points, if she won the title it'd be 750 points. So any of those scenarios would give her more points than Zhuhai.

If she loses both RR matches she'd get 250 points or even if she won 1 and lost 1 she'd get 375 points altogether which aren't enough so she'd keep her Zhuhai points.

This is quite impressive from Bertens, I mean she can't have had any time to get used to these conditions in Shenzhen after coming here from Zhuhai.

Now up 2-0 in the 3rd set against the world #1.

It's not over until it's over. 4-2 now Bartens with Barty on serve. Hardly a score that cannot be turned.

unfortunately for the attendance in Shenzhen, a city known for its "workaholic" culture , it will be hard to fill the seats during a weekday, to make things even worse, it's actually week night, it will be very difficult to fill the seats late in the evening. Most tennis fans have to get up to work or go to school in the morning, it's just not an option for them to go out and stay late.

And Kiki Bertens defeats #1 Ash Barty for the first time.

Barty had led the H2H 5-0.

Second career win over a #1 for Bertens, pretty amazing since she was playing the Zhuhai final just a few days ago.

Is it possible for the player to qualify to the semifinal with only two matches played in round robin, even if both are wins? Does Bertens have a shot at making it or is she just filling in for two matches?

Bertens has a real nice chance to make the SF yet again despite being an alternate.

Plays Bencic next, leads that H2H 3-0 including a win in Stuttgart this year.

When was the last time an alternate made the SF?

Definitely. As it stands (before the Kvitova/Bencic match plays), she's at #2 in the group to qualify for the SF. If she beats Bencic on Thursday then I imagine she'll pretty much qualify no matter what.

And a breadstick from Kvitova to force a 3rd.

That means 5 of the 6 matches so far this week have gone to a third set, good for the crowd... if there was one.

jesus christ kvitova not able to win a single match? seriously?! this was her opportunity and she ****ed it up again

well Petra certainly lost her game at WTA final, she was a champion and a runner up, now she has trouble winning RR matches, lost all 3 last year, might lose all 3 again this year.

Whoever win between Bencic and Bertens will go to SF.
If Kvitova win in 2 she might made it. If Barty win she will go through.

In fact, if Kvitova beats Barty in 2 she is through no matter what happens in the other match. If Bencic wins, Kvitova will have a better % sets won vs. Barty and more matches played vs. Bertens. If Bertens wins, then she beats both Barty and Bencic on % sets won.
I'm kinda hoping Kvitova beats Barty 2-1 in sets and Bertens beats Bencic 2-1 in sets. That way Bertens is through and the other 3 are all tied with 1 match win and 4-5 in sets ;)
