The court is slower than French Open lol.

Good move from Serena to withdrew. So does Naomi to preserve her winning streaks and not get dragged on 2hr matches all the time.

I know, but like I said it's a process which might pay dividend. We saw a little bit incremental crowd in Wuhan and Beijing if we compare year on year and this year we didn't even have Wang Qiang on SF.
Europe is declining. French Open crowd worsen year after year.

Weekdays crowd is tragic, I love Shenzhen but really this might also taken into account of what's happening in Hong kong at the moment.
I would not going into Hong Kong for holiday at this time.
The ATP Tour Finals had great crowds in London. That said, I think the ATP are generally better at promoting their tour compared to the WTA. The latter whilst really pushing Gauff, and to a point Andreescu, focus heavily on Serena Williams who plays part time, and, again to a point, Sharapova. They rarely promote Halep, one of the few that actually puts bums on seats.
The ATP admittedly has more marquee names with a global presence. And they also promote heavily the more controversial players such as Kyrigios. Also their social media/websites/streaming etc appear more user friendly. But they are in a better position whilst they have more star power.
It will be interesting to see how this changes once the top male and female stars of the game retire.

So true.
And if you're looking for intensity on the court and commitment to the game, it's hard to look any further than Halep.
She's not only the anti-Kyrgios of the WTA but also has one of the most inspiring background "stories" (that's what late capitalism seems to focus on when trying to make things "entertaining"), with all the elements related to the narrative of "beating the odds" and "maximising her talent".

But all of these seemingly important things apparently go out the window if you're Eastern European or, at least, not sufficiently "westernised".

When was the last time both Alternates were used?

Can’t see Andreescu playing Svitolina so Kenin will likely come in to play that.

She is not allowed to play. Once you retire you're out.

Last time is 2009. Safina replaced by Zvonareva and funnily Zvonareva replaced by Radwanska.

Edit: On top of that Azarenka also retired on her last match and Wozniacki retired on SF. Lol that's horrible.

So Pliskova, Bertens, Bencic and Svitolina are the 4 semi-finalists?

Nope. Bertens and Bencic have to play eachother in the last RR match while Barty plays Kvitova. Whoever wins between Bertens/Bencic will qualify outright and then there’s some scenarios for the other results.

With Osaka out and Bertens in and now Andreescu likely out and Kenin likely in, imagine if someone else withdrew... apparently it would come down to the highest ranked singles player from the doubles draw which in this case would be Sabalenka who was the Zhuhai champ. Absolute chaos.

Osaka and Andreescu out.
YEC just seems like a tournament that punishes the outstanding top players of the season and rewards the bottom part of the top 8.
Let's hope for the future of this tournament that this is a glitch rather than a pattern.

And to complete the mess, Kenin will beat Svitolina, who will then go on to become the champion here.
The champion will only have been beaten by the doubles alternate. :D

Did Serena qualify?

I don't know, maybe not.

Kenin is in. Good move from Andreescu to withdraw. Everyone should just withdraw and left Elina with hefty 2x prize money of French Open lol!

As far as l can see Williams was 9th in the Race, and could have been an alternate (too funny to contemplate :) ) and qualified for last week's tournament of the 'lesser lights'.

But seriously, she rarely plays and still nearly qualified. ;)

On the doubles side, it looks like Babos/Mladenovic-Sabalenka/Mertens could strike a deal to both go through and eliminate Schuurs/Gronefeld by letting Sabalenka/Mertens win 2-1 in sets.

Not really sure quite what to make of this?
Andreescu goes from emotion to emotion in a blink of an eye.
Odd.

Yikes. Krejcikova/Siniakova led 4-0 and 5-1 in the 2nd set and had 6 set points but have lost the next 4 games and are now serving to stay in Shenzhen.

Which they do, tiebreak time.

Poor Kenin is just sitting and waiting for Andreescu to make her decision. Not impressed with Bianca to be honest, should've withdrawn already.

Stunning 2nd set from Ash and she knocks out Petra Kvitova 6-4 6-2.

In her WTA Finals debut, the world #1 qualifies for the SF.

For the 2nd straight year, Petra Kvitova goes 0-3 at the WTA Finals.

Important reminder that she was one set away from #1 in January...
