I can't believe Soderling actually made fun of Nadal right in front of him and fans

On topic:

Soderling's behaviour was uncalled for. Plain and simple. There are far better ways to make a point.

Nadal was, as usual, taking far too much time. The restarting of the service motion was unnecessary. Soderling already went to get a new racquet...gee, did he do that cos he did NOT know it was new balls?

In short, it was time someone called Nadal on his time-tactics, but the way Soderling did it wasn't the right way.

Yes, I agree.

1. soderling went to his bag to get new racquet b/c there were new balls (shouldn've done it at that moment but still, newballs=newracquet
2. nadal's pissed (I'd prob be a little too) so he comment's sarcastically "new balls!"
3. soderling pwned him!!
seriously here's the incident w/ meaningful commentary:

So lets say he does have OCD. You think thats its right to make fun of someones handicap just because he is beating you?
a) When was this diagnosis made?

b) You try to base an argument on ... something you just made up???

c) If you think people ridicule Rafa's idiosyncracies "just because he is beating" them, you are mistaken. His delays constitute cheating, or don't you get that?

...They can't stand a nice young man because he beats their arrogant hero ...
Wow. That's what I call "revisionist history."

Actually the first guy I remember really complaining about it was Agassi.
Thank you! The way I saw it, until Agassi actually made a stink about it, the ATP was letting Nadal get away with his delays. But then Agassi already was a Big Shot ... Nadal was (then) "just" a rising star.

I often wonder just how bad Nadal's behavior would have gotten if Agassi hadn't forced the officials to enforce the rules....

The ATP wasn't letting Nadal get away with anything. Agassi was just being sour grapes because he likes to play fast. He's been known for more than a bit of gamesmanship in his day! Nadal doesn't cheat, or go around blaspheming anybody! It was STILL Federer who took it to another level because of their h2h. Why then is it a problem with Canas too. Coincidence?

Incorrect! What actually happened was since Soderling stopped the service motion, when he came back Nadal began to bounce the ball. The chair reminded Nadal that is was new balls, so Nadal had to stop, hold up the ball and restart! Soderling is an idiot!

funny how this thread turns into a fed bashing thread.

i don't understand that because some people don't oppose what soderling did, they are branded fed fans and their motivation to speak is because nadal leads federer in the head to head? so narrowminded.

that's about as ignorant as you can get. sorry buddy, but the tennis world doesn't just rotate around your boy.

Finally somebody openly pointed it out lol. It was funny the way Soderling gestured like saying"You saying I take my time to make you wait? Why don't you tug on your shorts?" to Nadal.

Looks to me like Nads tried to dish it out....and couldn't take the return jab. I hope Soderling beats the crap out of him in the 5th...

BTW, there is a girl here locally who is from Sweden. We were playing mixed against each other about a year or maybe two ago. She was brought up in the juniors there and is a little older than Solderling. She said she had to call lines at one of his matches and that he is an arse...

...What Soderling did was only embarassing to himself and the sport. It had every intent to ridicule and embarass one of the nicest and most sincere players on tour. I understand he has a past of being a loose cannon according to Mats Wilander and his experiences with him on the Swedish Davis Cup team...

Gamesmanship begats gamesmanship.

I cannot really blame Soderling too much. It's not the classiest thing to do but
I think anybody in Soderling's position would do it if needed.
Nadal must be annoyed by the fact he couldn't finish it off in 3 sets.
If you're his opponent, you have to maximize that effects.

I also saw McEnroe imitate Nadal's tic in a single's senior match with Sampras recently. :( I would think by now his coach would have mentioned it. I still luv watching him play.

nadal was taunting soderling by further delaying things after soderling's racket change. nadal was angry after soderling went to change rackets. but soderling changed rackets only b/c nadal forgot (or refused) to signal new balls and many players change rackets when the balls change.
That's exactly what happened. Did you even watch the match, saram?

as a father, maybe you would have taught nadal to behave correctly, avoid his ugly fistpumpings, nasty looks at his opponents and other ridiculous antics... he simply got what he deserves.
The one that is ridiculous is you with nitpicking every little thing Nadal does. Excitement and nervous ticks are normal in a tennis match.

Thanks for the link. The clip shows that Soderling did it in response to a sarcastic reminder from Nadal that he was serving with new balls, which was a response to Soderling walking back to his bag to get a fresh racquet when Nadal was about to serve, which was a response to another instance of Nadal's interminably slow getting-ready-to-serve shenanigans.

When are the officials going to call Nadal on his repeated violations of the time rules??

Good on you, Robin!

Except Soderling will look stupid if he loses. And he will have to shake the very hands that ... well, were in certain places.

So Nadal goes on to win his service game and then breaks Soderling to go up 2-0 in the 5th. But I see they're on serve 4-4 when play was suspended.

Soderling's gonna have to shake that butt-picking hand win or lose. Yuck... Definitely an incentive to win.

Ah, who can forget the Agassi - Krucera US Open match where Agassi started moon balling and mimicing(sp) Kruceras errant service toss. It happens to the greatest of tennis players. They become human! The thought of it. LOL.

Just to throw my two cents. It was entertaining, but in the end, Nadal did his response in a more humor zing way, Soderling did his in an embarassing frustrating demeanor. The tension was high at the time. All of this will pass.

I'm not a Nadal hater, but it was great to see someone OTHER then Rafa pull that. Sure makes for a nice change of pace...

U know what though everyone makes such a big deal about it after said loser walks off the court in disgust. Maybe if his opponents would tell him like an adult before hand or even while they are on court that it is bothering them then this would not be an issue and it would not have turned into a adult male acting like a two year old brat

It's like with me, it's not what you say it's how you say it. You could be completely right in telling me off but if you do it in a disrespectful manner, you get nothing coming from me.

It's about time people start acting like freaking adults and stop appalled them when they don't.

nevertheless i admit you're right on one point : i didn't like when he won against roger... hey, how the hell could i enjoy that ? ;)
sure this doesn't help me to like nadal, but that didn't trigger my hate : nadal himself is enough. :)

yes i have to admit that... ]

All he had to do if it was bother him so much was say that it was bothering him, rafa I mean and if soderling was bothered by rafa and his time in between points all he had to do was say so in a respectful manner.

they both of them have no one to blame for their frustrations with the other but themselves.

my philosophy is if I don't have the balls to say it to you before hand in a calm manner, then I don't have the balls to lash out at you. Because it doesn't take much courage to lash out at some one in anger it's a natural reaction that when the adrenaline wears off you feel ashamed you did.

If they had acting like adults there would be no incident to talk about

I saw parts of the match and the instance that revolve around it. As mentioned earlier--I say that you can pick on ANY part of a person's game except things that are not of control. I guess some people do not understand OCD, nervous tics, manerisms, behavior or anything like that. He has done this since childhood--not something he walks onto the court and does for gamesmanship or conquering his opponent.

I am sure and would put money on the fact that if he could control and stop this--he sure would. I bet it upsets him to see himself on tape and continue to do it regardless of him not wanting to.

Man! There's a bunch of cry-baby panzies on these boards. Soderling mocking Nadal right in front of him is gamesmanship. It's the same thing as Nadal going sleeveless and giving those Sly Stalone-ugly stares at his competitors. Anybody can wave a finger in Mutumbo's face if they feel like it, and they can walk the walk. It seems as though it's getting under Nadal's skin, too...Soderling is walking the walk in the 5th set so far. Good for Soderling, I think it's funny and it makes me like him without even knowing anything else about him...he's got balls. "Boo-hoo, don't make fun of my Rafa because...I love him!" The game needs more irreverant characters like McEnroe, Connors, and Nastase from back in the hey-day. It's so boring nowadays. Except for the pure beauty of Fed's play, there is nothing too interesting about the ATP. Bring on the personalities...nice work, Soderling.

Yes. Dr. Phil is correct.
The way to do it is in a civil way, openly communicating with the chair umpire...in a calm voice within earshot of Nadal, the microphone and Nadal's box. ANd Nadal's shorts.

Well maybe not on court but during change over and what not, or even in the locker room. These guys live pretty much on top of each other on tour, if you want to you can find a way to be civil. Rude is never an excusable quality

Williams/ Shriekapova/ Nadal

other palyers are not respected but these guys just get beat up or made fun of all the time for absolutely ridiculous things

It's sad that people take the energy to really hate some one because they

Pick their shorts

scream when they hit the ball
