It puts him in need of 8 more grand slams (or less if he can pull a calendar slam) and in need of a us open. If he wants to be considered greater than Federer he can probably win a slam or two less than him and the h2h would help him out. Right now he is in agassi's league, doesnt have a career slam but pulled of wimbledon and french open in the same year.

As a Rafa fan this is my perspective:
If Rafa, maintains his great H2H vs Federer, this will show Rafa as a player who could hold his own against one of the greatest of all time. Just a great H2H doesnt count for everything though. Nalbandian is 8-10 vs Fed. But I think years from now, he will probably not be a name that is greatly remembered.
With Rafa though, he also has 6 slams, this makes him a very special player.
I think Rafa is already knocking on the doors of top 10 of all time, if he wins a few more slams, he will surely be there.

hmm, a little upset that your idol Sampras isn't the greatest. News flash, he never was to begin with. Feel free to keep rooting, I've been rooting for years for someone to knock that jerk Sampras out of the spotlight where he shouldn't have been to begin with.
As for Nadal, I do hope he continues to do well, and I would like to see him win a US Open.
To answer the OP's question. Just having a winning record against someone isn't enough. I belive that Nadal is close to being in the elite group. He is going to have to get a few streaks though, and a few records to start being raised higher in status. And he'll now need the US Open at least once. Quite frankly though, his records on the clay courts have already put him up there.

Only time will tell where Rafa ends up in the GOAT conversations. Clearly, he is off to a great start.. However, with Roger now at 14 GS championships and four finals at Roland Garros and GS Championships on all surfaces now, and having reached twenty ( 20 ) consecutive Grand slam Semi-Finals or better, he will be considered by most the GOAT, until Rafa or someone else approaches or passes his accomplishments..

Ah, yes he did. In 2007, when he lost to Federer in 5 at the Wimbledon final, he completely broke down in the locker room with his Uncle Toni consoling him. He kept telling his uncle that he'd blown his best opportunity to ever win Wimbledon. Honestly, it was that moment that cemented me as a Nadal fan as well as Federer's.
