Andy Murray: This time I'm ready to Slam it at the Australian Open

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/te...ne-says-fired-Andy-Murray.html#i xzz0clht3BNu

When coming to terms with past setbacks at major events, Andy Murray has always consoled himself with the fact that it took Roger Federer 17 attempts before he landed his first Grand Slam.

At the Australian Open on Monday, Murray reaches the same landmark at the age of 22, one year older than Federer was when he landed the Wimbledon title in 2003.

‘I feel I’m more ready to win a Slam this year than I was last year. I just need to play my best tennis and I think I’m ready to do that.’

One reason is that he is better prepared for this event than in 2009, having given up his Qatar Open title and doubtless the large guarantee that would have come with defending it. Instead of the late dash from the Middle East he has been in Australia since the turn of the new year after his training camp in Miami.

‘It’s something I’ve talked about a lot with my team, making sure I’m 100 per cent for the Slams and I’m not picking up any bugs or anything.’

A cold was a contributory factor in last year’s defeat by Fernando Verdasco in the fourth round, which is Murray’s best showing to date at Melbourne Park where his record should not be so modest.

‘I’m a lot more mature and I really had very few bad losses for the first time. You get used to winning, even when you are not playing your best.’

Murray is is trying out a more aggressive game relatively gentle warm-ups this year. There are signs that he has beefed up his forehand but the test will come when he needs to produce it under the greatest pressure.

_______________________

The signs are ominous. Murray's time is coming and he's got a great shot at the title if he wins his QF match with Nadal..

Good luck to him. Don't think it will happen though. He hasn't looked all that great so far this season even though it was just the Hopman

Murray Feels Ready to Win the Australian Open
_____

It has been very obvious in the build-up to Melbourne that Murray has been working on being more expansive, testing out some of the things he has perfected in practice. His forehand has more power and spin and he is able to pull his opponents out of court in a style we have not seen before. His second serve is more aggressive and he has been serving and volleying, as well as moving forward whenever the opportunity arises.

Darren Cahill, one of the most respected coaches in the sport, believes the breakthrough is not far away. "I think you'll see Andy Murray coming out of the blocks and really asserting himself," he said. "The Australian Open is a great place for him to start. The surface is perfect for him, physically he likes the heat and I think we'll see a very, very strong performance from Andy Murray, perhaps even winning the event. I think it's going to take a lot to stop him. And I expect 2010 will be the year he wins his first grand slam title."

Murray, who will play a qualifier in the first round on Monday, admits that 2010 should be the start of his grand slam winning years. "This is an important year for me," said Murray, who has been so relaxed that he even found time here to host a coaching clinic for his sponsor, RBS. "I prepared really well, practised well in Miami and trained really well. It doesn't have to be this year, it could be when I'm 30, you never know with those things. But in terms of my physical peak I would have thought it will be between 23 and 28."

He should let his tennis do the talking.

He needs to add another person to his entourage who can stand by him ever ready with a piece of duct tape.

I'm not sure what Murray is supposed to say when he's asked this question. Perhaps he should reply:

"I don't know. Namranger and Blink say I'm not, and they've both got quite a high number of posts on TW so I guess I should listen to them - no; I'm not ready to win a slam".

Blinkism is concern about Rafa having to face Murray. ha ha.

That's exactly it.

Btw, that should be "concerned" not "concern".

I know English is not your primary language, but I'd appreciate if you stayed on topic.

Thanks.

Yeah, Murray's terrible return of serve will be his undoing there.

Not forgetting his record against really tall guys with a big serve - that's why he's 10-0 on hards v delpo/karlovic/querrey - Murray sucks against really tall guys with big serves.

So, are we pretending there was no US Open in 2009?

Oh, so NOW Murray is ready.

He was just joking the last 5 or 6 times he said he was ready to win a slam.
eheh... what a joker: he got you, didn't he ?! :)

i like how he added "this time" in the sentence of last year. for 2011, i predict he will add "really", and for 2012 "and i'm not kidding, you can ask to my mum".
(at least that's what they advise to do in the "how to make a muzzette interview" toolkit)

How many times have we heard he thought he was ready? And 'need to play my best' - there are about 10 guys in the locker room thinking the same thing.

Sorry, but at this point his cred is shot - I will have to see it to believe it.

I think it might be Murray's chance this year. Simply because the draw is favorable to him in terms of matchups. He faces Nadal in the QF and then probably Delpo in the SF who he has a good record against. (4-0). Murray's biggest challenge will be to beat Nadal in the QF, and then he would have a great chance to win the tournament. I think Murray will be the favorite in that match because both players know that Murray’s best on hardcourts is better than Nadal's.

Hardcourt is the one surface where Murray’s had success against Nadal, and I’ve noticed he always plays “more” aggressive against Nadal than he does against other players. From what I’ve seen in the past few encounters (since Murray really became a genuine top player), Murray’s really played with confidence against Nadal. There matches have been very close starting from the Toronto 2008 Hardcourt match, through the USOpen 2008 SF (which Nadal lost) and even in their most recent encounter "on clay" at Monte Carlo 2009, Murray gave Rafa a big scare.

Murray is coming into this tournament with a lot to prove and with the averages on his side after being unlucky at AO 09 and UsO 09 with injuries. His game really suits the surface here. At AO 2009 when he was ill, it still took a red-hot Verdasco playing the tennis of his life, 5 sets to beat Murray. That should tell us something.

I think the relatively slower surface allows Murray to chase balls and gives him sufficient time to show the full repertoire of shots that he has. He will be very very hard to beat here. The Rafa-Murray QF match might turn out to be the match of the tournament. Murray will be hungry for redemption and give it his all. So I think he has a better shot at the title than his seeding would lead you to believe.

Tennisfan,
The way you describe Murray matching up with Rafa, you are doing a good job at scaring all the Rafa fans. Haha.

Murray only won 1 slam match vs Nadal and he needed 2 days to do it on a faster surface than AO. Nadal beat him at AO before and he's leading the head to head 7-2 (the only other loss coming in an indoor event when Nadal was injured and he still won a set ).
I don't find all that too scary for Rafa TBH.

He was in the process of pwning Nadal even before the rain came iirc.

Needing 2 days to win is not a reflection on how Murray played in that match. In fact when the rain suspended play on the first day, Nadal was trailing by 2 sets to 0. So arguably Nadal was the beneficiary of the rain delay and Murray could well have beaten him on the same day. Like I said all their recent matches have been contested very keenly with Murray a couple recently ( and that's NOT counting the exho in Dubai which Murray won).

Isner just won a title and is at a career high ranking. He is dangerous to any player. Should they meet, which I think they will, I think there's a good shot at an upset.

NamRanger, no disrespect intended, but I watched the latter part of Isner's Heineken tournament win and saw a kid with lots of aces and lots of UEs (22 aces, I think and 36+ UEs...yikes)!! That's not a great combo for winning matches with Fed, Rafa, Djoker, Del Potro, Davy, etc....even Murray!

I'm an American, but even I can see that while Isner's on his way up, he ain't UP there YET!!

5 of Nadal's wins came before Murray was the player he is now. Also, Nadal won a set vs. Murray in Rotterdam because he got injured in the second set and basically just tried to hit every shot for a winner. He wasn't injured when he lost the first set and he got bagelled in the 3rd set.

Similarly, Murray was 2 sets up on Nadal when the rain delay came in New York. Without the rain, it may very well have been a straight sets win for Murray. Nice selective memory there, though.

Good to see Murray talk with confidence, always nice to see. BTW, Murray, like Federer, is a late bloomer and therefore, is taking more time to develop his game than one dimensional ball bashers like Del Potro or even players who only rely on their topspin game like Nadal do for that matter.

I won't be surprised if he ends up winning couple of slam titles in 2010. :)

Nadal is always injured, so we can't help him out. Next time Murray rips him apart (which will happen quite often away from clay), I won't be surprised if Nadal is *injured* again.

With his serve he can upset anyone.

Rafa and Murray both have a lot to prove and either would be disappointed with a QF finish. Murray has to win AO though cause he has no shot at French and very little at WImbledon.
