I remember Speed at Bolton. Model professional from what I saw and read of him. And suicides are never fun for anyone really. Just a sad situation overall :(

As well as being desperately tragic, I find it so baffling and can't quite get my head around it...

He's on Football Focus (where he gives an evervescent performance)... he's with Alan Shearer for a bit afterwards where they watch some Prem football (they arrange to meet the following weekend with both their families)... he's photographed outside TV studios with fans (huge smiles)... he drives home... and a few hours later hangs himself in his garage - for his wife to discover early next day.

Here's a man making genuinely huge progress with Wales (I said before on this thread he should be in charge of England not Capello.) An esteemed and lengthy pro career. Money to burn surely. A real looker for the ladies. Apparently a cosy and settled family life with two kids (one of whom is at Wrexham I think it is.) A reputation for being solid, a great friend, very popular, etc, etc.

This isn't someone who has seemingly displayed any depressive streak to anyone, and all indications that he enjoyed a stressful but rewarding high-profile career/life-style... but there must obviously have been something very wrong somewhere.

Looks like Kenny is going for it tonight! Not good. Liverpool winning twice at the Bridge in the space of a few weeks doesn't bear thinking about.

His best friend also said he was not depressed and had a great relationship with his wife............there's more to come out about this, not all is as it seems. Either something is about to come out about him, severe enough to have suicidal consequences or this is not a simple suicide.....very strange.

Spearing and Coates were the only ones who aren't really starters. Chelsea had Turnbull, Bertrand, McEachran and Lukaku who never get a game.

It wouldn't of really made a difference as I said, Liverpool could of put out anyone against any Chelsea team and won fairly easy these days.

yeah true enough, still, i was very happy watching liverpool look so comfortable in possession. Its been a long time, infact its the barnes, beardsley, aldridge era in the late 80's (when kenny was the manager previously!) that we showed so much confidence.

I thought Bellamy had a real good game but it was Henderson playing slightly more central that caught my eye and looked very good with Lucas. I mentioned that I would love Aldridge to be 20 again as we have no potency infront of goal........i expect Dalglish is looking at that for the January sales. Otherwise its nice to have competition in midfield, its also good to see Skyrtle and Agger getting a run as the main defenders. Our full backs can get forward and there is strength in depth there and there is the special one, Suarez, never mind Gerrard being crocked. Just lacking up front.

Chelsea on the other hand........Fena, I would certainly be worried, it does seem that they need a good overhaul, unfortunately the movement of managers has helped the longevity of some of the older players. Im sure you will sort it out and come good again soon, but can you trust AVB with the transition?

I believe you can trust him, yeah. So does the owner it seems, all the fans I know are happy he's the right man too. As i've said before, I don't really think he's to blame. It's been over a year now of Chelsea playing crap, it started in the Man City game away from home and it has gone on ever since. Ancelloti tried everything and it didn't work, there's no reason to think Villas-Boas will be able to get the same group of players doing anything different.

At Porto we saw what he's capable of with his kind of players, unfortunately Chelsea only really have Mata and Romeu who fit his mold. With the whole financial fair play thing coming in you can't go out and buy the players the manager needs. That's what has been so disappointing about the lack of focus in the market over the past 3 seasons. Players could of been signed, the right kind of players, but the club sat back and did nothing. I've mentioned Aguero before, he was desperate for a move to Chelsea a few January's ago but the club wouldn't pay his wage demands. The funny thing is, they're alot less than what Torres is on now! :)

I can't really see the Club being competitive for a while now. With it being hard to get quality players through the door and the emergence of Liverpool, Tottenham and Man City to go along with Man Utd and Arsenal.

liverpool need a front man imo who works the back line, someone like a defoe/owen type, short clever runs, knock it in the back of the net.

Any recommendations for kenny for january?

I always found Suarez does that pretty well :)

I was telling Ross about Spurs and Arsenal being interested in Podolski. He would fit in nicely on the right of the 4-2-3-1, he'll be an upgrade and get you more goals than Kuyt I think.

As for small Defoe or Owen types, I don't really see many about these days. David Villa makes some great runs and is the best finisher in todays game imo, I heard he had a falling out with Messi? With Barcelona having Pedro, Messi, Sanchez and all those fantastic youth players waiting for a chance, maybe he might be a good option to go for.

I agree I see suarez as a link man like rooney/villa. And like rooney/villa he will start most games up front on his own. The main difference tho is that he doesnt knock in the amount of goals per chance ratio of the other two. Thats why i would like a finisher as another option to join the ranks with him and the battering ram, Carroll.

Kuyt has been a bit part player since Kenny came back, I admire his industry but he is soooo slow and has no touch hence he has never been given the chance to lead the line.

Maybe Im old fashioned, thats why i like a rushie, an aldridge, a fowler, a guaranteed 20 a season. The Barca way, not having a so called front man with a few players interchanging positions seems possible with suarez leading the line I suppose. The way we played the other day it felt like that with Bellamy, Maxi and Henderson interchanging whilst Carroll watched :)confused:)

Villa would be lovely, yes of course but I cant see it happening, maybe Chelsea or Milan??

I was just having a think of another forward who is not necessarily getting a game and could be prised from their club and within the framework of our team could be the man.......but cant think of anyone, Defoe was one i thought about but we would want someone who is confident infront of goal.

Yeah, why not Defoe? I'm not sure Tottenham would be keen on selling him to a rival, but if he isn't getting many games before now and January he might look to force it.

Man Utd did well to find a pure finisher in Hernandez, it seemed like he came from nowhere. Maybe looking to South America would be an option? I was reading Liverpool are putting more effort into scouting players from there than they have in the past. It's always a risk going for players like that, but they can work out.

Maybe you should of tried for Klose in the summer, before he went to Lazio. He's 2 goals short of the all time leading record in World Cups, he's scored 63 International goals and having seen all 6 of his goals for Lazio so far this year (in 11 games), they have all been trademark finishes. He doesn't do a whole lot else, but give him half a chance and he doesn't miss.

Defoe can never seem to settle at a club-similar to Robbie Keane like that. Talented no doubt but there always seems to be other issues. Not as bad as Tevez though.

The key for Pool will be to find another mid field destroyer if Lucas is out with a knee for the year. He packs a big punch for his size.

That's because Defoe follows 'arry wherever he goes, triffic player don't ya know - meaning he'll need to start getting out of his taxes if he wants to go to prison as well!

Interesting to have O'Neil back in management again. With a pretty talented Sunderland squad and a decent budget they should be a threat again and tough to break down like their early days under Bruce.

Even Bendtner might start bagging a few goals :)

I'm interested to know peoples opinion on Sturridge?

Every game he has 5 or 6 chances, but his finishing always seems to let him down.

He played great again today as he usually does, the Newcastle fans gave him a standing ovation and he caused their side huge headaches. He made arguably the best defence in the league so far look average.

No doubt he's not finished article and if he can keep improving, he'll be one hell of a player.

I say just give him time. He's more accomplished then many of the pace merchants out there.

It's taken Theo some time to get going but he's rounding out nicely and Sturridge will as well. When it comes to putting the ball away, Sturridge seems to be in a hurry and it leads to misses. He'll figure it out eventually though, especially when he's on the end of sweet passes from Mata.

It was his first in the League since West Brom, which was the second game of the season. He's played more in the Champions League and Carling Cup, but not a whole lot. In the Champions League he gave away a stupid penalty after coming on as a substitute against Valencia, look how important that mistake seems now we're on the verge of going out of Europe.

I think that's a good way of looking at it. When I think about it he does seem to be in a rush all the time, it's good to see when he's bursting past players, but his mind seems to be going just as quick when it comes to finishing and playing the ball to a team mate in the box. The thing is that he manages to get in incredible positions, if he can control himself abit more he'll be scoring and assisting on a regular basis.

Play him up front!

I don't think his finishing is good enough for that yet :) Also, we are very short of wide players for the time being, so I think he'll be out wide for a while yet.

With Anelka handing in a transfer request, Drogba leaving possibly next month and Torres playing like a toddler, maybe the club should look at bringing in one or two wide players to allow Sturridge to be the striker. A second half to the season learning how to play the position a bit more could be beneficial long term. Chelsea fans would certainly accept giving up on this season if it sets the foundations for a good next 10 years.

Already really looking forward to next weeks Barca - RM game. Still fresh in my mind is the widespread frenzied devotion we experienced last summer in Catalan region during same fixture.

It also seems like Jose Mourinho is doing the business again! Just like with Porto, Chelsea and Inter, he's getting his side challenging very robustly for the title and in Europe... ego-maniac, nutter, negative tactician, call him what you will - he does seem to achieve success at the very highest of levels eh?

The great thing about this Real team is that they are entertaining to watch; I cannot deny the effectiveness of his early Chelsea sides but always found them a bit dull. The Inter squad was a bit better with Wesley but Real are fun to watch. I'd love to see them take out Barca: I'm not a fan

As someone who watches alot of Serie A, describing Mourinho's Inter as more fun to watch than the Robben, Duff and Cole years at Chelsea is harsh! :)

I'm with you on Real, though, they're good to watch. Hopefully they can stop Barcelona in La Liga and the Champions League. Bayern Munich, Man City and AC Milan have a shot, but Real have the best chance.

Good point, I'd forgotten about Robben. As electric as he was to watch though, his diving has always been an unfortunate part of his game. His pace is fantastic and I love him drifting in from the right to hammer it with his left.

Speaking of Real, I saw Sergio Ramos courtside during the Davis Cup earlier today.

Jose's first Inter squad with Zlatan in it was dull, predictable, and boring as all hell. They weren't an awesome team either. The only reason they won Serie A was because the rest of the league wasn't up to snuff. There's a reason United tore them apart in the Champions League both home and away that year. His second Inter team were only good due to Sneijder being awesome and all that.

This year's Real side is phenomenal. And awesome to watch. Last year's team was awesome and he's seemed to fill the few holes in the team nicely. I got 10/1 odds on them taking this year's Champions League. Did I take that bet? Hell yes I did.

He left and Malouda replaced him, which also saved £10 Million. At the time I said there's no point in having a Ferrari if it never leaves the shed, and that's what Robben was unfortunately. You've never been able to trust that he will be there for the team when it's needed as he misses so many games through injury.

Malouda might not be as good, but he's more consistent and you know what you're getting with him.

His back foot was hardly studs up, I could understand if it was, slightly raised, completely taking ball first, what's he supposed to do somehow stop in mid flow. Shows how the game is going and I for one don't like it. We need balance.

As for liverpool once again can't beat a pusher, the average joe, fulham, wolves, doesn't matter, until this changes we can't seriously compete. Even spurs have managed to do this!

You're right. I think it seems to of come in more over the last 5-7 years, everytime you see Barcelona play you hear them complaining about how their players are being kicked and the other team is too rough for their little Barca-Barbies. With them being the team of the moment the powers that be seem to listen to them.

It's one of the reasons i'm not a big fan of theirs, with their moto of being "more than a club" they like to take the high and mighty stand on things. They look down on other teams and are shocked if they don't let them play, fingers crossed they meet Madrid in the latter stages and they get turned over. Although we already know what the Barcelona based newspapers will be saying the next morning :)

1:11-1:12 pretty much shows that he didnt even touch him!

I don't really agree with the ruling of it as you are correct that he doesn't connect with the player, but the cards for 'dangerous play' are more common now and a two footed challenge that high is going to get a player sent off almost every time - even happened in the Liverpool derby this year to Rodwell.
(I say 'almost' because Paul Scholes got away with it all the time but we all know ol' Scholsey could never tackle! *chuckle from commentators*).

Yeah the rodwell incident was a joke too. I understand the dangerous play argument and I agree with intent, but the only intent here was to clear the ball, over zealous maybe but hardly intended to injure.

I thought they played fine. Nothing special though. Why isn't Lukaku getting any playing time these days? I thought he'd like to learn from Drogs for as long as possible and I thought that's why Chelsea bought him (i.e as a successor)?

Amazing, wasn't he?

People used to laugh when I said he was better than Torres a few years ago, well he's still showing it to be true well into his 30's.

And what's worse, he wants to leave Chelsea. And that'll leave Torres. Which isn't good. Torres wasn't good today when he came on.

Lukaku isn't in the Champions League squad I don't think, as for why he isn't playing so much, i'm not really sure Villas-Boas fancies him that much. All the groundwork was done before he came in as manager, if it was up to him I think they would of gone with someone else.

Yeah, i'm not sure Drogba does want to leave. He's said he wants another 2 year contract, the problem is that the club have a policy to not give older members of the team any more than a 1 year contract. Maybe something can be worked out, if not then they will probably go for Vargas from Chile and that Lazar Markovic from Serbia. Having seen bits of them both they seem to be more like the players Villas-Boas would want, Markov reminds me of Lavezzi. They both look to be amazing technically and that's the way the game is going. I'm not sure if the manager thinks grooming a tall, stocky, battering ram striker is the way to go.

I wonder if Lukaku isn't playing because of lack of pace. His stature is similar to Drog but he's a bit bulkier and Chelsea seemed to be shifting the ball much quicker last night.

Great result by the Blues, now AVB needs to enjoy it in silence and continue to let his results do the talking.

One of the things I enjoyed about Mourhino's departure was a quieter, classier approach to the press by Carlo. I guess that's gone now.

The most persecuted team in England?...lol He should call Arsene and ask him about that ;)
