Maximum Weeks at No 2

We know Fed has maximum weeks at No. 1

Who are the on the top 10 list for the No. 2 slot in terms of number of weeks ?

Rafa, Lendl, Edberg, Agassi, Becker, McEnroe come to mind..Connors, Wilander ??

Can someone with the record please list ?

In my interpretation this means :

If maximum weeks at No 1 greater than maximum weeks at No 2, then the player clearly achieved the peak that was needed at that time.

If maximum weeks at No 2 greater than weeks at No 1, then there were one or more superior players during the players career.

Please discuss.

rafa has been no. 2 for almost as long as fed is no.1 right?
245 or thereabouts i think.

i suppose they should also have an almost equal number weeks being (1+2)

no.

and if thats the case that just furthers federer's goat status, because even if nadal could beat federer he couldn't beat anyone else enough to surpass him.

Lendl? You can NOT be serious!

This is the one record that is bad for the player. It just shows the weakness in a player's resume that he/she cannot overcome his main rival of his era... Becker is a good example of this. He was one of the best in his generations, but was never really THE best...

Looks like it is Nadal followed by Becker.

Surprising to see Sampras having this much time at No. 2

went on wikipedia and found out that:
"Nadal has held the No. 2 ranking for an ATP record 241 weeks (as of 9 July 2012)."
i overshot by 4 weeks. oops.

Just as I thought...Nads is the consummate #2 man. Behind someone for most of his career. Less pressure there...

I reckon Murray must be the longest-serving #4, not that this estimable record could possibly attract praise in these parts.

I think he prefers this. That's why I analogize him to the stalker horse in thoroughbred racing; he prefers running from behind/is not a leader.

Seems adept at wood shedding, though, at figuring out certain tactical advantages beforehand so that he will have most or all of the answers to an opponent by the time that he steps on the court. I suppose he takes game planning to the extreme. He reminds me of a cunning warlord who relies no more on actual horsemanship and swordsmanship in battle than he does on guile and trickery and other non-manly conduct (think Allobroges who failed at trying to ambush Caesar after he had invited Caesar to a "neutral" place where the two could 'discuss a possible truce').

Rafa seems to do much angling and calculating from behind protective cover, does not seem to enjoy being out on the front line for long.

Who would be the next in line for total weeks at #2 in recent decades? Agassi? Lendl?

Seriously, guys--Lendl was one of the most dominant #1's of the Open era. What's with you trying to turn him into a long-term #2?

The "longest" #2 in the 80's was by far Becker (behind Lendl), if that's the name you're looking for.

Just looked up his stats; he really was dominant. 5 seasons with a win% above 90. Is that a record? Fed only has 3. Rafa 0.

Nadal's added a couple more to his record tally, if I'm not mistaken. Opportunity to cement the record here, if he can hang on for a bit longer.

Weeks at no 1 is an overrated stat. If you have been no 1 all season, say all 52 weeks, it kind of implies that you have been the best at every point in the year which simply is not true in most cases. There were plenty of weeks in Federer's 300+ when he clearly was not the best player. On the top of my head I can think of a few in may and june each year :))

Actually, that is not what it implies at all. If you have been ranked #1 for every week of the year, it means that in any given week you have been the most successful player over the last 12 months, not necessarily over the most recent part of the tennis calendar.

Your criticism of this statistic seems to be based on the fact that you have misinterpreted what it means.

You are correct, but that is why I think it is an overrated stat. Probably was not clear enough in my phrasing it properly :) I critizise it for that very reason, it is a statistic that can be easily misread and it implies something that is not necessarily there.

Nadal has by far the longest spell as No 2.

248 weeks, with the runners-up being McEnroe and Becker (136 weeks).

Murray has the longest spell at No 4 with 174 weeks.

Ferrer has the longest spell at No 5 with 114 weeks.

http://www.tennis28.com/rankings/weeks_No2_No10.html

this website hasn't been updated for several years, these are old stats.

Nadal has 405 weeks on Top 2, minus 141 weeks @no1 that's 264 weeks at No.2, and counting...

Federer has 471 weeks on Top 2, minus 302 weeks @no1 that's169 weeks @No2

Djokovic has 351 weeks on Top 2, minus 223 weeks@No1 that's 128 weeks at No.2

Weeks @No3:

Federer 156
Djokovic 143
Nadal 57

Weeks @No4:

Nadal 54
Federer 33
Djokovic 27 +

Murray has 388 weeks at Top 4, probably a lot of it @ No3 or No 4
