Mikeler's Polys

Love the quote in your signature, Borderline. I couldn't agree more. Great thread too, Mikeler. Really enjoy your reviews. After rediscovering tennis last year after a very long hiatus, I spent most of the year playing with the 100T ESP strung with Prince Tour XC at 60. Such a fun racquet.

I have so many regrets about stopping tennis during my prime. I probably played 10 times between 18 and 30 years of age. Welcome back to the game, enjoy it!

Thanks, man! Yeah, I am pretty ****ed about taking such a huge break, as well. I'm in the exact same boat as you, just played a few times between the ages of 18-35. Became a golf professional, and that just pretty much trumped and took over the tennis gig, and now it's the other way around. Really enjoyed getting back on the courts last year. Anyway, not trying to side track your thread... my bad. Got some Genesis Typhoon to string up thanks to your review hopefully soon. If these awful Wyoming winter doldrums will ever go away, that is!

Did you find ALU Power Spin to be too stiff and a little lacking in power? I unfortunately did and I've tried it two times now. Spin is good though.

I thought it was soft enough and had sufficient power but it sure did not last long. It could just be that different strings feel different in various frames.

I think that Solinco Diamond Rough should be the next string to seriously review. It may be too powerful for your Prince frame, however.

Almost all the polys I've tested seem to fall into the 20% to 25% tension loss range.

I'm glad that I saw this response. Can you please tell me what the typical tension loss is for multi-filament strings? If it is equally as drastic, I may find myself using multi strings for its feel, then replacing them after 4-6 hours of play. The only two negatives are the annoying movement of the strings and the power that can hinder control.

I'm playing quite well at the moment plus I have some leagues coming up soon, so I don't plan on string testing for a good while.

If I recall correctly, multis seemed to be closer to 15% tension loss. It has been awhile since I've used multis though. You can check my Multis thread and I list the tension loss for some of them in the reviews.

Good for you. You have been so selfless in helping those in need of good feedback, that any time that you donate to your own game is well deserved.

Thanks, I'm not done with string testing. Just a temporary pause...

I have not tried ruff code yet. Check out my signature for my "goto" poly setup.

i figured you would say that. in my opinion though, it lacks the bite that i want. maybe if i try a smaller gauge it might give me enough bite, or maybe a hybrid will do me fine. thanks again.

WC B5E and Genesis TB are helping me play the best tennis of my weekend warrior career. It does everything well, feels great, and I get 20+ hours.

Stick with it and you will figure out any thing you think it is weak at...for me it was slicing and serving, now I am slicing and serving the best I have ever sliced and served...I just had to get used to it.

Glad you are still liking it.

How do you fellows like Oehms polys?
How does Golden Clover and Black Pearl Classic play?

Never heard of those. Maybe they only sell them in Europe?

mikeler,

I hit with a 5.0 girl and 5.5 girl yesterday. Both played college tennis at very large schools. The 5.0 played at a school with five NCAA Basketball Championships while the 5.5 played at a school with four NCAA Football Championships.

Both asked me "What strings are you using?"

I told the 5.0, I will tell you if you play 9.0 mixed with me. She gave me her number (in front of her boyfriend ). ;) Don't worry, he is a friend and I just want to hit with her, not on her. lol The 5.5 was crazy good, but unless she can get bumped back to 5.0 she is off limits. :(

To Volkl: Cyclone Tour in Captain America Blue please.

That Captain America (V-Torque) setup in my Steam 99S looked like the bomb. Very colorful. lol Anthracite is boring. :-| If people are looking at my strings or socks, that mean's their not looking at the ball.

I converted two more players to CT yesterday. But with this caveat: I refused to tell them the name of the string. I just take their frames and bring them back under the cover of darkness. Cash only. ;)

Had to love Blue Star and Wilson Shock Shield, eh?

I hated Shock Shield and Pabst Blue Ribbon, that is all I need to know.

I have the blue S-gut 17 string in my Biomimetic 200. I have to admit, it does look cartoonish. I can justify it with the low price.

I get comments about my strings, my socks and my shoes. The best comment ever was "I didn't think you would be any good". ;)

Last night a buddy of mine from an opposing team told his teammate, who was playing singles, to look for the guy with ugly shoes. lol (they were black & green) Do you remember when all tennis shoes were white? I was an early adopter of shoes with a lot of color. ;)

There are a quite a few yellow, and red strings , but not much blue or green.

I was also an earlier adopter of CT and sent Mikeler two packs to test, so here's hope more people discover this string and Volkl makes some new colors.

Volkl was kind enough to send me 12 packs of 16g in the red for free. So they do listen ;)

I didn't realize they had sent you a bunch of free packs. TW had the $5 Cyclone Tour baggies a few months ago. I bought 20 packs then and wish I would have bought more.

You crack me up -

A buddy has a Blue V-Torque / Hawk Volkl PB9 -

Talk about ugly - orange, black and white frame with blue and white strings. :(

It looked like a miniature version of Gainesville, FL - oh gross

I ordered a 16g reel and it took two weeks to come in. The Volk rep sent the store 12 packs with the reel and said this is for the guy who ordered the reel.

Give him this for his patience. :)

I wish I had bought more of those baggies packs also. Had a guy call me last night at 1130 pm wanting more - he had been at our local pub with his team and didn't know what time it was. He let two other guys on his team hit with his Steam 99S and wanted to know if I had enough to string a few more frames. Lol

I sent you the 2 free packs a few months before I got the 12 free packs.

Karma perhaps? :)

Speaking of Karma:

About 15 years ago, I saw a distraught looking woman fumbling for money and in a rush at a parking meter. I had $1.40 in change in my pocket and I gave it all to her for the meter. The next day, I flew up to Washington DC and took the metro out of the airport. Right before I went up to buy my fare card, some random guy hands me his fare card on the way into the airport and it had $1.40 left on it.

Thats pretty cool.. seems good actions feel good when done and occasionally are rewarded in kind.

Oehms polyester are kind of good imo.. i play tested Black Pearl and Golden Clover.. both nice strings and fair prices relative their performance.

That is very cool story.

Hoping CT gets a bigger following and Volkl throws out the Skittle Variety Pack colors 16g with 10 packs for $30. :) Not sure purple is in my future, but for $3 a pack, I would be all in. I could try to sell the orange for a $1.50 per pack. ;)

Big fan of Volkl Strings as well. My preference is the V-Pro over the CT but both are very good. I have bought over 40 baggies of V-Pro and will buy more if they have it.
I have hit Cyclone and would use it more if it would keep its play for a bit longer. Its a great string but a definite "one night stand" string. If I strung my own, I might use it but I need something that lasts. Volkl V-Pro mains and GOGSM Crosses gets me over 10 hours of hard singles hitting.

I like Cyclone but it lasted 4 sets for me so that is a deal breaker. Cyclone Tour gets to the point where I'm hoping for it to break and then it usually cooperates around that 12-15 hour mark.

Hey Mikeler, I've been using the Prince Warrior 100 ESP(14x16) for the last month and really like it. So far, I've been using Wilson Ripspin (1.35)/ Isospeed Baseline (1.35) and string life is approaching 8 hours and still going strong(I bought 4 of them and rotate).
What would happen if I put a thinner gauge in as cross? I have some 1.25mm poly laying around. Is this going to really shortened the life of the string bed?

Hard to say. I suspect the crosses would break before the mains with that big of a gauge difference.

I played against a lefty last night in a league match that was using 18g Cyclone Tour. Man his spin was nasty with that setup.

Hey -

Looking for a low launch angle, low powered poly for my weighted GSP. Any thoughts on Black Fire? Spiky Black Shark? I assume that any textured string is generally going to have a higher launch, is that correct?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Never tried Black Fire. Spiky Black Shark was OK. Maybe try Weiss Cannon Black 5 Edge.

I'd definitely go smooth and slick. In all honesty I would recommend you to try something like PHT or 4G... or if your arm can handle it Big Banger Original. BBO is one of my favorite strings but some people have noted it is hard on the arm.

A cheaper option that played STUPIDLY well in GSP for me was Goldenset Powerchord though. It is smooth, durable, and just matched up very well to the GSP.

hey Mikeler,

wanted to ask, since i may invest in a new poly reel for a full bed..
was wondering about the Cyclone tour 18g,
because i never break strings anyway..
so from all 18g around that price tag, do you believe it has decent longevity/playability? that's my main concern (i string around 50/48 )

i just don't want to feel a huge drop in control after 4 hours, if you know what i mean.

Not Mikeler, but I've tried the 18g cyclone. Drops a stupid amount of tension before breakage. It's something I've noticed with almost all 18g strings, outside of hawk and TB.
