Yes, I know Calle--my point was he is no longer training for competition, giving lessons is not great tournament prep. Yet he almost took out someone who trains everyday for competition.Hansen is still amazing with his 30+ years.

Farren, the #4 seed lost today to #5 seed Julio Peralta 1-6,1-6...
well peralta was a really good pro..sth that farren has not shown yet..so result is not that surprising
he has a career high 213 way back in 2003. A player at USC should probably be able to be more competitive than that. Hanfmann and Sarmeinto would push current guys around the rank of 213, Quiroz as well.
Peralta is getting good money on the USTA circuit or?

Farren showed no sign of injury in his matches at Ojai--he's just not that good. He beat a junior in the 1st rd and barely survived against a teaching pro in the 2nd. Smith realized this and relegated him to the Open event. He wouldn't have allowed Farren to play at all with an injury. Crystal played the Open as well, but got the call in dubs vs. UCLA. Farren got killed by Peralta, period. It was embarrassing, he was completely outclassed. You have a crush on him don't you?men's tennis doesn't go 6-1,6-1... he's probably still hurt ...

what say you of Peter Smith ?
I'm USC fan but I really like what Billy Martin is doing... he's recruiting American homegrown and getting the job done..
I'm surprised Peter Smith kept putting Farren at 4 even though he kept losing matches at that position
Then why is he entered in the Palos Verdes Open tournament this week? Smith wouldn't let him play hurt. Quiroz is also entered as well. Draws not out yet. You should go cheer him on....no Farren because I think he's still not 100% to play singles ..

that's their weak spot for USC .. no one seems to be able to win consistently at #4 .. that's why I like to see Wang at #3 ... Quiroz play and win at #4 ... Max V..at #5 ...and E. Johnson at #6.. Yannick at #1 ... and Ray at #2...
1.Yannick Hanfmann
2.Ray Sarmiento
3.Jonny Wang
4.Roberto Quiroz
5.Max de Vroome
6.Eric Johnson
close to ranking order too .no Farren because I think he's still not 100% to play singles ..
Nothing against Smith but he did have Nguyen and Johnson during that 4 year period, they've only lost twice combined at the NCAA tournament....

You've replaced your problems at 4 with problems at 3 though. The question is who can win more. Wang at 3 or De Vroome at 4.
I've noticed that throughout the years Smith has done his lineups in a very straight up way as opposed to Billy Martin. Back in 2012 when UCLA beat USC at USC, Thompson was bumped up to 1 because Martin knew that Stevie J was gonna beat anyone, however this allowed Nick Meister to play Sarmiento who he beat.
I'm surprised Kris Kwinta, the current assistant at USC who use to assist at UCLA hasn't influenced Smith's decision to mix up the lineup
So let me get this straight, a college coach who's been in the business for over 25 years, won four consecutive championships suddenly slaps his forehead and says, "Now why didn't I think about that?!" when Kwinta tells him what Billy Martin was doing with his lineup. Please.
And to attribute his championships solely to Johnson and Nguyen is really too silly. The first year Nguyen played six, Johnson two and the team was seeded 8. From the round of sixteen on Johnson went 2-1 with one unfinished, Nguyen 2-0 with two unfinished. Looks like to me somebody else on the team was winning points. Second championship they were seeded five. Johnson picked up one point with three unfinished from the #2 position, while Nguyen picked up four from the four slot. In the championship match they beat Tennessee who were really loaded that year 4-2. Again, somebody else is winning points.
Winning championships isn't easy, just ask Boland how many he won when he was the #1 seed. And if Puget hadn't touched the net last year, it would be zero.
Opps I forgot to mention they had Robert Farah who's top 40 in doubles at the moment and was top 200 in singles on the atp tour

Who recruited him?
Farah was almost going to go to another school
college tennis has the most transfers of any school
Wow...that says a lot about this sport. And it ain't good.
