Yeah, sublime performance from Federer - simply too good. As a Djokovic fan I'm disappointed but truth be told not that surprised as I had a feeling Roger would be really up for this one and let's face it, he was due a win over Novak after four years. Even at the age of 38 on the rare occasions he plays like he did tonight he's still the best player out there, which is really quite remarkable when you think about it. Nothing but respect from me.

Excellent post. That is why you are one of the best Djokovic fans around.

I see your side of it. But so, you wouldn't say that Wimbledon 2019 final was super entertaining and enjoyable because the crowd behaved poorly?

I always enjoy Fedovic matches the most because those two are rivals at heart and it shows in their matches, which I love. The crowds are a different matter.

No it was a terrible atmosphere. The only good thing about it was Djokovic shutting them down. USO 2015 was even worse.

The tennis is great but the crowds are not.

He'll need AO2020 more than ever to stay in the Slam race. Especially at his age and the rising of the young gen (Thiem, Medvedev, Tsitsipas, etc).

I agree 100%. If he does NOT win AO 2020 - that would mean he is at a significant disadvantage in the slam race. As Nadal/Thiem are more favored at the French.

But I believe Novak will make a statement at AO 2020 - by dominating the tournament as he did in 2019 - meaning winning with just losing 1 set or something like that.

so wait who does fed play next. sorry, so I assume fed/thiem are guaranteed, fed being the runner up and thiem being the first winner with tsitsipas being the firm winner on the other end, and then they need to play to figure out the runner up correct?

Fed will most likely have to face Tsitsipas in the semis

Deserved win for Roger who was on superb form tonight. But Novak looked a little subdued and was holding his elbow a lot. Maybe the old problem has flared up again?

BS. Didn't call any trainer and he still served and hit well without expressing any pain.
He did express pain several times.

Anyway, Rafa clinches YN1 for the 5th time, same amount as Rafa and Novak. I would never imagine in my life Rafa would get this many and only one slam away. So it is time for a celebration drink! Cheers!

Because there was no pain, as Cahill and P-Mac made it plain: "gamesmanship, but too little, too late."

I did see him clutching his elbow at one point. In pain. So not a bluff, I think.
Not saying injury is why Novak lost. The way Fed was playing today, I don't know if anyone in this era could have beaten the Swiss. You would need to get Pistol Pete with his indoor power to compete.

i realize fed hasn't beaten novak since 2015 but i forget that there was a good chunk of time they just didnt meet either because fed was away from injury or vice versa. i really kept wishing they would meet in 2017 cuz i think fed could have turned some of that around

Impossible to know. The young guys are getting better and stronger and are making inroads on the big 3. Djokovic will need to be in the form of his life and it's harder to do that with age. His game is going hot and cold more often than not these days. And he's already had enough trouble with his elbow and his shoulder.

Fingers crossed it's something similar to their last indoor meeting. I know we talk about how Roger's not beaten him in 4 years or whatever it is, but best of 3 is always going to be his best shot nowadays, and here at this tournament he treasures so much, be something to see how he does with his back against the wall.

I know that didn't work out so well for him in Cincinnati last year, but I feel like the weight of this meeting feels a step up even from that, not about a title, but more both guys trying to stave off father time.
Back against the wall. Was like god.

AO, IW, Mia, Wim everywhere roger would've been an overwhelming favourite over djok had they met

As I always say, you know something epic is happening when Mike Sams is here :)

Novak was not winning this anyway. His elbow wasn't an issue.

My reaction precisely. The whole time I was waiting for him to blow up, smash a racquet, or yell at the crowd. When he just stayed quiet and with his head down I knew it was hopeless
He was pretty calm for his standards at Wimbledon too which had me worried.

Glad he escaped then rather than tonight. But still disappointed with how finished the year.
